Why do policies and strategies often fail, and what can be done about it? How can complexity be managed in cases where it cannot be reduced? The answers to these questions are anything but trivial, and can only be found by combining insights from complexity science, system dynamics, system theory and systems thinking. Rooted in the seminal works of Gregory Bateson, Jay Forrester, Donella Meadows, Peter Senge, W. Brian Arthur, John Sterman and Thomas Schelling, this book bridges the gap between rigorous science and real-life experience to explore the potential and limitations of leverage points in implementing policies and strategies. It also presents diagnostic tools to help recognize system archetypes, as well as the powerful language of stock and flow diagrams, which allows us to think in terms of circular causality. These tools are subsequently employed to thoroughly analyze particularly thorny problems such as global climate change, the tragedy of the commons, path dependence, diffusion of innovations, and exponential growth of inequality.

Adopting a broad, comparative perspective, the EUROSTUDENT 8 - Synopsis of Indicators provides information on students' socio-economic and study-related backgrounds, their study conditions and experiences, including international mobility, and their living conditions. It aims to inspire policy debates on the topic of the social dimension and lay the ground for further research. Dantzig's development of linear programming into one of the most applicable optimization techniques has spread interest in the algebra of linear inequalities, the geometry of polyhedra, the topology of convex sets, and the analysis of convex functions. It is the goal of this volume to provide a synopsis of these topics, and thereby the theoretical back ground for the arithmetic of convex optimization to be treated in a sub sequent volume. The exposition of each chapter is essentially independent, and attempts to reflect a specific style of mathematical reasoning. The emphasis lies on linear and convex duality theory, as initiated by Gale, Kuhn and Tucker, Fenchel, and v. Neumann, because it represents the theoretical development whose impact on modern optimi zation techniques has been the most pronounced. Chapters 5 and 6 are devoted to two characteristic aspects of duality theory: conjugate functions or polarity on the one hand, and saddle points on the other. The Farkas lemma on linear inequalities and its generalizations, Motzkin's description of polyhedra, Minkowski's supporting plane theorem are indispensable elementary tools which are contained in chapters 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The treatment of extremal properties of polyhedra as well as of general convex sets is based on the far reaching work of Klee. The project EUROSTUDENT has been delivering data on the social and economic conditions of student life in Europe for the past 20 years. The current edition presents the data and results from the period 2018 to 2021, and is based on information provided by students from 25 countries in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The project also examines the social dimensions of studying at a higher education institute, as well as, in part, the impact of COVID-19. The EHEA emphasised this social dimension in its 2020 Rome Communiqué; it was therefore one of the key topics the project group focused on with the aim of inspiring education policy debates and establishing the basis for future research work. The latest report therefore includes data on access to higher education and the respective conditions experienced by the students, their willingness to relocate internationally to pursue their studies, the quality of higher education courses and the planned courses of study. The report is the EUROSTUDENT project's most important publication, and is developed by a network of researchers and national ministry representatives as well as other stakeholders from all over Europe.
