Early settlers first called this area Boldface Hill, for a Native American chieftain, but the name was soon changed to Price's Hill, named after Rees Price and his family, who were among the first city dwellers to see the residential potential of the area. Rees's father, Evan Price, speculated in land west of the city, and his son opened a brickyard and sawmill to serve the building boom. In 1874, Rees's sons John and William built an inclined plane to make the commute up the hill easier. With improved transportation, the community's population soared, mostly because the air was cleaner up on the hill than it was downtown. Strong community roots were quickly seeded and have since grown. Schools such as Seton, Elder, and Western Hills each have a large number of supportive alumni. Catholic and Protestant churches were built, as well as two synagogues. Businesses were started, and two libraries grew with the population. Residents were active in politics, social clubs, and civic associations. The first Skyline Chili opened here and was named for the stunning view of Cincinnati this hill offers. Other local favorites are Price Hill Chili and the Crow's Nest. Through more than 200 photographs and illustrations, readers can see for themselves the roots of this great community.

There has been a great deal of restructuring of rural places and communities under globalisation, highlighting the interaction of local and global actors to produce new hybrid socio-economic relations. Recent research highlights the heterogeneity of globalisation in which rural places are different to each other, but also different to how they were in the past. Bringing together an interdisciplinary team of academics, and comparative case studies from Europe (West and East) and Asia, this book explores and discusses opportunities and challenges associated with globalising rural places, and identifies possibilities for policy and practical intervention by rural development actors. Special attention is paid to multi-scalar processes through which rural places are reshaped through globalisation. Taking a geographical approach, the book produces new critical work on the interdependence between globalisation and rural spaces. It is organised into five sections: Part I focuses on ’Global-Rural Linkages’ showing the multifaceted interrelation between actors at different geographical scale and demonstrating that globalisation is not only external to rural spaces. Part II on ’Rural Entrepreneurship and Labour Markets’ explores the potential of business start-ups in rural spaces which are not only necessity driven. Part III ’Rural Innovation and Learning’ shows that rural places are also places for innovation and learning. Part IV on ’Rural Policies and Governance’ argues that regional policies for rural places should promote side activities to maintain social capital and that regional policy should take a more integrative perspective between urban and rural spaces in order to explore complementary development paths. The concluding chapter ’New Approaches to Rural Spaces’ discusses new approaches to globalising rural places in relation to the preceding chapters published in this book.

This book is about the crisis brought about by doctrine's estrangement from reality--that is from actual lives, experiences, histories, and from God. Bowel dysfunction resulting in fecal incontinence and constipation is a common outcome of central neurological disease, associated with loss of voluntary control and altered autonomic function. Neurogenic bowel dysfunction has both psychosocial and pathophysiological consequences and is increasingly recognized as having a major negative impact on quality of life in individuals with central neurological trauma or disease. It is often a source of dependency, and appropriate provision of care in the community is an important issue. While the range of options for management of this problem is relatively narrow, structured intervention developed in collaboration with the patient, based on thorough clinical assessment, is effective. Intervention to manage bowel dysfunction from the earliest possible stage of disease-related change or following trauma promotes effective long-term management and must be accompanied by education of patients and their carers. Continuing evaluation of bowel management outcomes is essential in maintaining appropriate and effective management, which can provide continence, avoid constipation, reduce associated morbidity, and improve quality of life. Research interest in this important but often overlooked area of care is increasing but further work is needed to develop alternative management strategies, and improve outcomes and quality of life.

This book offers a comprehensive overview of the role of parliamentary administrations in the control of European Union policy-making. It questions whether the decision to give parliaments greater powers in the aftermath of the Lisbon Treaty had only the intended effect of political debate on European policies, or whether it has also resulted in the bureaucratisation of parliaments. This book explores the impact on EU member states of intensified European cooperation in the field of vocational education and training. By employing the Varieties of Capitalism approach as an analytical framework, it seeks to bridge diverging views from an innovative standpoint: While many experts argue that EU policies liberalize national training systems in spite of being ‘soft law’, Varieties of Capitalism argues that these polices do not produce a convergence of national institutions. The book maintains that European instruments such as the European Qualifications Framework and the European Credit System for Vocational Education and Training are indeed biased towards liberal training regimes. On the basis of case studies on Germany, the Netherlands and England, it shows that the initiatives were implemented in line with national training systems. Thus, European soft law does not lead to a convergence of training regimes – or, as the book posits, of welfare states in general.

This book reports an ethnographic study of thirty teachers from eighteen schools who participated in a staff development programme in multicultural education. The study examines how multicultural education was actually presented to teachers, and areas in which their classroom teaching and perception of students changed over the two-year period. Although most of the teachers reported learning a good deal, changes in their teaching and their discussions of teaching were fairly limited. After reporting the data, the book examines why changes were limited, analyzing three areas: the nature of staff development and how multicultural education was packaged; the structure of schools as institutions; and the identities and life experiences of teachers as White women, often from working class backgrounds.

Casa Materna was founded in Naples, Italy, in 1905 by Pastor Riccardo Santi. Since then thousands of children from Naples and other economically-depressed towns and villages of southern Italy have lived and been educated there.
