This volume examines the school-to-prison pipeline, a concept that has received growing attention over the past 10–15 years in the United States. The “pipeline” refers to a number of interrelated concepts and activities that most often include the criminalization of students and student behavior, the police-like state found in many schools throughout the country, and the introduction of youth into the criminal justice system at an early age. The school-to-prison pipeline negatively and disproportionally affects communities of color throughout the United States, particularly in urban areas. Given the demographic composition of public schools in the United States, the nature of student performance in schools over the past 50 years, the manifestation of school-to-prison pipeline approaches pervasive throughout the country and the world, and the growing incarceration rates for youth, this volume explores this issue from the sociological, criminological, and educational perspectives. Understanding, Dismantling, and Disrupting the Prison-to-School Pipeline has contributions from scholars and practitioners who work in the fields of sociology, counseling, criminal justice, and who are working to dismantle the pipeline. Then there is your wedding and "BOOM," your whole world falls apart, they were right! Humour was sarcasm, strangers are helped, never family! He was not what he appeared to be. Then came the jail term, my lawyer sold me out, according to a judge I should have walked from the court house! At least my sons are alive, I would do it again in a second, no regrets!
Aims To some, the field of neurogenetics appears perplexing and indecipherable. In this volume, we will address this issue by providing clinicians with a framework for dealing with these disorders. This book is not intended to be an in-depth, comprehensive review of all neurogenetic conditions from 'A to Z'. Instead, we will provide a concise discussion using case studies to illustrate the most important and topical neurogenetic disorders. This case-based approach will make the book easy to reference, clinically relevant, approachable, and, we feel, more interesting. Scope The contribution of genetics to many neurological diseases is becoming increasingly apparent, and so it is imperative to stay up-to-date with these conditions. The 31 chapters in this volume cover a wide range of inherited conditions including forms of dystonia, Parkinson disease, spastic paraplegias, mitochondrial diseases, myopathies, neuropathies, and much more. Particular attention is paid to practical issues regarding how to make a genetic diagnosis and how to counsel the family. We will also address some contemporary issues in neurogenetics, such as the impact of direct-to-consumer genetic testing. General Approach In keeping with the WDIDN series, each chapter commences with a brief case study, which will be used as an example of an important condition in neurogenetics.
