Assessing key questions such as who the foreigners and outsiders in ancient Maya societies were and how was the foreign a generative component of identity, Foreigners Among Us reassess the arrival of foreigners as part of archaeological understandings of Pre-Columbian Maya and questions not only who these foreigners might have been but who were making such designations of difference in the first place. Drawing from identity studies, standpoint theory, and ideas on alterity, Foreigners Among Us highlights the diverse ways being foreign was constituted, imitated, and marked – from quotidian practices of making corn tortillas to ceremonial acts between king and captive and their memorialization in scenes on sculpted stone monuments. Rather than treat the foreign as axiomatically determined by geographical distance or fixed at birth, the book considers the foreign as much performed as inherited. It examines practices of captivity, cuisine, body ornamentation and dress, diasporic objects, relationships with deities, migration, and pilgrimage. The book focuses, in particular, on diverse peoples in the Maya area during the Classic and Postclassic periods, but also necessarily peers into contacts, engagements and relations throughout Mesoamerica, the Americas more broadly, and with Europeans during the Colonial period – all the while insisting that outsider status must be approached as multi-scalar, relational, and intersectional rather than as neutral, intrinsic, and static. Contributing broadly to intellectual investigations on foreign identities from an anthropological perspective, this book enriches the understanding of Maya society for students and researchers of Mesoamerican archaeology and art history.

This thesis investigates the detection efficiency of field-resolved measurements of ultrashort mid-infrared waves via electro-optic sampling for the first time. Employing high-power gate pulses and phase-matched upconversion in thick nonlinear crystals, unprecedented efficiencies are achieved for octave-spanning fields in this wavelength range. In combination with state-of-the art, high-power, ultrashort mid-infrared sources, this allows to demonstrate a new regime of linear detection dynamic range for field strengths from mV/cm to MV/cm-levels. These results crucially contribute to the development of field-resolved spectrometers for early disease detection, as fundamental vibrational modes of (bio-)molecules lie in the investigated spectral range. The results are discussed and compared with previous sensitivity records for electric-field measurements and reference is made to related implementations of the described characterization technique. Including a detailed theoretical description and simulation results, the work elucidates crucial scaling laws, characteristics and limitations. The thesis will thus serve as an educational introduction to the topic of field-resolved measurements using electro-optic sampling, giving detailed instructions on simulations and experimental implementations. At the same time, it showcases the state-of-the-art in terms of detection sensitivity for characterizing mid-infrared waves.

This book explores the phenomenon of anti-femail genital mutilation (FGM) social media activism. Against a backdrop of over 200 million girls and women worldwide affected by FGM, this volume examines key global online campaigns to end the practice, involving leading virtual platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Drawing from twenty-one fieldwork interviews with anti-FGM activists, frontline practitioners and survivors, the volume investigates opportunities and challenges inherent to cyberspace. These include online FGM bans as well as practices such as ‘cyber-misogyny’ and ‘clicktivism’. Global campaigns featured include the UN’s International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, the WHO’s Sexual and Reproductive Health Programme, The Girl Generation, The Guardian’s End FGM Global Media Campaign and the Massai Cricket Warriors. Furthermore, ten case-studies document prominent anti-FGM campaigners. Firstly, five African-led narratives from celebrated activists: Efua Dorkenoo OBE, Waris Dirie, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Jaha Mapenzi Dukureh and Leyla Hussein. Second, five accounts from FGM survivors interviewed for the book: Mama Sylla, Masooma Ranalvi, Farzana Doctor, Fatou Baldeh and Mariya Taher. By exploring anti-FGM online activism, this book fills a gap in the literature which has largely overlooked FGM’s presence in cyberspace as a virtual social movement. This book performs a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis to examine the current food crisis and how it relates to the use of crops for energy. It analyses how energy crops may help solve humankind’s environmental changes and summarises the economic and practical changes of cultivating and utilising energy crops. Two of humanity’s greatest challenges are the need for more food production as well as growing demands for energy. Biofuel cultivation has been identified as a solution to growing energy use, and biomass power plants offer a rare renewable energy source that requires only basic technology. In this context, a dilemma arises concerning whether energy crops should be used for energy or to help remedy the food crisis. SWOT analysis allows us to organise and weigh different pros and cons against each other in terms of economics, job creation, environmental impacts, the climate change agenda, and European Union (EU) directives that promote biofuels over fossil fuels. By pursuing this approach, the book helps researchers and decision-makers cut through the many competing arguments in connection with this complex subject.

Welche kulturprägenden Optionen liegen in der Kunst des Choreographischen und was bedeutet dies für den Begriff der Choreographie, der eng mit den Potenzialen des Körpers korreliert? Vor diesem Hintergrund eröffnet der Band eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit den Funktionen, Potenzialen, Zuschreibungen und Versprechungen von Choreographie. Aus kulturtheoretischer und -soziologischer, tanz-, theater-, medien- und kunstwissenschaftlicher Perspektive werden ästhetische und kulturelle Tragweiten von Choreographie diskutiert und im Kontext von Szenographien, Erinnerungstechniken, Ausstellungskonzeptionen, Museums-Events, autobiographischen Entwürfen, Gesellschaftsformationen, Aufführungsästhetiken und digitalen Tools untersucht. Auf der Grundlage ihrer strukturellen Gefüge, die medial durch Notationen, scores und Handlungsanweisungen vermittelt sind, bringen Choreographien Formen und Gestalten hervor. Ihnen kommt dabei eine ästhetische und kulturelle Funktion der Ordnungsstiftung zu. Außerdem scheint ihre Kunst eine geradezu transformatorische Organisationskraft zu besitzen, die es versteht, mit energetischen Kräften zwischen Körpern, Räumen und Zeiten 'gliedernd' zu wirken. ABOUT THE BOOK I’d stumbled upon Randy Pausch, a youngish professor from Carnegie Mellon University, quite by accident in 2011. I’d been looking for a good PowerPoint presentation about time management, and the one he gave was deemed to be really interesting, according to the Google searches I’d done. As I read the mini-bio attached to the file, it occurred to me that I’d heard the name before, so I did some further searching and realized he had written “The Last Lecture”, which I’d heard so much about a few years ago. I immediately headed out and picked up a copy. As I read, I was stunned by the powerful simplicity of his writing. I had already watched “The Last Lecture” on YouTube, as millions had during the time in which the presentation had gone viral, but I was surprised at the profound effect the book had on me. This was a man who, by all accounts, had everything going for him: a great job that he loved, three very young children and a beautiful wife whom he adored. MEET THE AUTHOR Christina St-Jean an Ontario English teacher with a great passion for American literature in particular and the written word in general. Her two daughters, aged 3 and 7, also seem to have a love of books, as her 7 year old just started reading Tom Sawyer herself. Christina follows global events as closely as she can but also enjoys entertainment news. Currently, she is working towards a black belt in karate. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK If anything, The Last Lecture showed to the world just how pervasive media attention is today; after the lecture itself became a YouTube sensation, Pausch made appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Prime Time Live with Diane Sawyer, in addition to appearing on Time’s Top 100 list of the world’s most influential people for 2008. He drew the attention of Katie Couric, The Wall Street Journal’s Jeffrey Zaslow, director J.J. Abrams, and none other than Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner. He testified before Congress to encourage more funding to be directed to pancreatic cancer research and received a letter from the original President Bush. Buy a copy to keep reading!
