Christian Poulsen examines the matter of prestige in academia. He sets out to disprove the widely accepted notion that universities are based on a pure meritocratic system. The study compounds extensive survey studies of Swedish professors as well as focus group interviews with male and female professors. It was investigated whether female professors are discriminated against in the transferring of merit to prestige. The acquiring of prestige is essential for succeeding at a career in academia. The distribution of prestige between women and men may help explain the low representation of women in full professor positions. The book helps to bridge the gap between various existing explanatory models. The findings were compared with other studies on prestige and status in which Spain served as a reference country.It was found that women were not discriminated against on the basis of the merits they had in relation to prestige. Additionally it was revealed that professors feel the status of the profession has decreased, but on the other hand female professors were more satisfied with the current status of professors. Not surprisingly it was also found that the prestige of Swedish professors is not based alone on merit. Instead relational factors play a role in the assignment of prestige. Christian Poulsen introduces the term 'consecrating moments' to explain the relational nature of assigning prestige. The concept refutes the widely accepted idea that a career in academia is made up of a long and continual flow of good performance. In doing so, it discusses sociology of education, feminist theory of women in academia and the theory developed by Robert K. Interferometry, the most precise measurement technique known today, exploits the wave-like nature of the atoms or photons in the interferometer. As expected from the laws of quantum mechanics, the granular, particle-like features of the individually independent atoms or photons are responsible for the precision limit, the shot noise limit. However this “classical” bound is not fundamental and it is the aim of quantum metrology to overcome it by employing entanglement among the particles. This work reports on the realization of spin-squeezed states suitable for atom interferometry. Spin squeezing was generated on the basis of motional and spin degrees of freedom, whereby the latter allowed the implementation of a full interferometer with quantum-enhanced precision.
The serial optical data format has attracted attention for decades now, because of its promise to reduce the number of active components in a communication system. Indeed, historically increasing the serial bit rate by a factor of 4, reduced the cost per bit by 40%. Going beyond the available electronic bandwidth (roughly 100GHz today) can be obtained using optical time division multiplexing (OTDM), and symbol rates up to 1.28Tbaud per polarization have been demonstrated. As most optical signal processing devices operate on a per channel basis, it is advantageous to aggregate the data in a serial format, since this allows for optical signal processing of many bits in a single device. This chapter gives an overview of the state-of-the-art of OTDM systems to reach multi-Tbit/s serial data and means to handle these ultra-high bit rate signals using for instance nonlinear silicon waveguides for e.g. serial-to-parallel conversion.
