Eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices and linear operators play an important role when solving problems from structural mechanics and electrodynamics, e.g., by describing the resonance frequencies of systems, when investigating the long-term behavior of stochastic processes, e.g., by describing invariant probability measures, and as a tool for solving more general mathematical problems, e.g., by diagonalizing ordinary differential equations or systems from control theory. This textbook presents a number of the most important numerical methods for finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors of matrices. The authors discuss the central ideas underlying the different algorithms and introduce the theoretical concepts required to analyze their behavior with the goal to present an easily accessible introduction to the field, including rigorous proofs of all important results, but not a complete overview of the vast body of research. Several programming examples allow the reader to experience the behavior of the different algorithms first-hand. The book addresses students and lecturers of mathematics, physics and engineering who are interested in the fundamental ideas of modern numerical methods and want to learn how to apply and extend these ideas to solve new problems.

Fatigue damage in a system with one degree of freedom is one of the two criteria applied when comparing the severity of vibratory environments. The same criterion is also used for a specification representing the effects produced by the set of vibrations imposed in a real environment. In this volume, which is devoted to the calculation of fatigue damage, Christian Lalanne explores the hypotheses adopted to describe the behavior of material affected by fatigue and the laws of fatigue accumulation. The author also considers the methods for counting response peaks, which are used to establish the histogram when it is not possible to use the probability density of the peaks obtained with a Gaussian signal. The expressions for mean damage and its standard deviation are established and other hypotheses are tested.

This book deals with the life and work of Nathan Zuntz and specifically addresses the contribution he made to high altitude physiology and aviation medicine. While some of the material on this topic has already been published in English (Gunga and Kirsch, 1995a, 1995b), the overwhelming majority of it is only available in German (Gunga, 1989). Recently, new and interesting sources on the life and work of the Berlin physiologist have come to light. That was why the author gladly accepted the invitation from the History Book Committee of the American Physiological Society in 2005 to write a biography of Nathan Zuntz. The result is a completely new, revised version of the book which is based on more than twenty years of study on the life and work of this physiologist. This biography could not have been written without the help of numerous people and institutions. Constraint Programming is an approach for modeling and solving combi- torial problems that has proven successful in many applications. It builds on techniques developed in Arti?cial Intelligence, Logic Programming, and - erations Research. Key techniques are constraint propagation and heuristic search. Constraint Programming is based on an abstraction that decomposes a problem solver into a reusable constraint engine and a declarative program modeling the problem. The constraint engine implements the required pr- agation and search algorithms. It can be realized as a library for a general purpose programming language (e.g. C++), as an extension of an existing language (e.g. Prolog), or as a system with its own dedicated language. The present book is concerned with the architecture and implementation of constraint engines. It presents a new, concurrent architecture that is far superior to the sequential architecture underlying Prolog. The new archit- ture is based on concurrent search with copying and recomputation rather than sequential search with trailing and backtracking. One advantage of the concurrent approach is that it accommodates any search strategy. Furth- more, it considerably simpli?es the implementation of constraint propagation algorithms since it eliminates the need to account for trailing and backtra- ing. The book investigates an expressive generalization of the concurrent - chitecture that accommodates propagation-preserving combinators (known as deep guard combinators) for negation, disjunction, implication, and re- cation of constraint propagators. Such combinators are beyond the scope of Prolog’s technology. In the concurrent approach they can be obtained with a re?ective encapsulation primitive.
