Since the global economic crisis of 2007–2008, ‘capitalism’ has been the topic of widespread general discussion in both mainstream and social media. In this book, Christian W. Chun examines the discourses of capitalism taken up by people in their responses to a street art installation created by Steve Lambert, entitled Capitalism Works for Me! In doing so, he considers several key questions, including: How do everyday people view and make sense of capitalism and its role in their work and personal lives? What are the discourses they use in their common-sense understandings of the economy to defend or reject capitalism as a system? Chun looks at how dominant discourses in social circulation operate to co-construct and support capitalism, and the accompanying counter-discourses that critique it. Rendering photorealistic images is a costly process which can take up to several days in the case of high quality images. In most cases, the task of sampling the incident radiance function to evaluate the illumination integral is responsible for an important share of the computation time. Therefore, to reach acceptable rendering times, the illumination integral must be evaluated using a limited set of samples. Such a restriction raises the question of how to obtain the most accurate approximation possible with such a limited set of samples. One must thus ensure that sampling produces the highest amount of information possible by carefully placing and weighting the limited set of samples. Furthermore, the integral evaluation should take into account not only the information brought by sampling but also possible information available prior to sampling, such as the integrand smoothness. This idea of sparse information and the need to fully exploit the little information available is present throughout this book. The presented methods correspond to the state-of-the-art solutions in computer graphics, and take into account information which had so far been underexploited (or even neglected) by the previous approaches. The intended audiences are Ph.D. students and researchers in the field of realistic image synthesis or global illumination algorithms, or any person with a solid background in graphics and numerical techniques.

The disassembly planning approaches presented are based on mathematical programming. With this methodology, a profit-optimal planning of quantities of multiple types of recovered products as well as parts distribution, material recycling, and disposal quantities is realised. Thereby,typical aspects, like material purity requirements, the condition of the recovered products, hazardous parts, and capacity limitations, are also considered. A new approach is the presented combination of disassembly-to-order planning and disassembly sequencing, which is called Flexible Disassembly Planning.

This report analyzes the hydrocarbon sector in Bolivia, which represents a vital component of its economy. In 2006, Bolivia nationalized the hydrocarbon sector due to unfavorable contracts for the government since the privatization of the sector 10 years prior. Without a coherent allocation system of the important hydrocarbon revenues, significant per capita disequilibrium will remain in which regions with a high population get considerably fewer resources than less populated regions. The current distribution system is discriminatory in the allocation of resources without taking into account poverty criteria in such a poor country like Bolivia. It also exacerbates the regional dependency on central transfers that depend on exhaustible and unstable hydrocarbon production. Presented here are the results of a hypothetical calculation of an alternative distribution system of the hydrocarbon revenues, introducing poverty criteria into the equation. However, the results of the hypothetical exercise presented have the objective of opening the debate and dialogue for needed reforms in the Bolivian hydrocarbon distribution system and do not suggest a definitive answer.

Since the referendum on Scottish independence in September 2014, interest on national and local identity in Scotland has soared. Anticipating this interest, the present analysis focuses on two major aspects: the local vernacular as employed in Hawick/Scottish Borders and its usage in the school context at Hawick High School. The emphasis lies on the present linguistic situation in terms of language usage and attitudes of both pupils and teachers. The study supplies a brief social, linguistic, and historical outline of the Hawick community and Southern Scots. The main part of the thesis is subdivided into two sections. Firstly, the linguistic situation in Hawick in general is illustrated and extralinguistic variables are taken into account whenever they prove to be statistically significant. Secondly, language use and attitudes towards the vernacular in the school context are explored. The conclusion summarizes the most important results and might serve as an impetus for further dialect and attitude studies.
