For a bowler, taking all ten wickets in an innings is the ultimate statistical feat. It is also a very rare one: in nearly 60,000 first-class matches it has been achieved only 81 times. Surprisingly, although books have been written about Hedley Verity’s world record ten for 10 in 1932 and Jim Laker’s all-ten in the 1956 Old Trafford Test, nobody has ever written a book describing every all-ten. Until now. All Ten chronicles each all-ten, from Edmund Hinkly’s at Lord’s in 1848 to Zulfiqar Babar’s at Multan over a century and a half later. All-tens have been taken at many different venues, from famous Test match grounds to outgrounds on which first-class cricket is no longer played. Some were taken by great bowlers such as Colin Blythe and Clarrie Grimmett, some by less well-known ones including Harry Pickett of Essex and Tom Graveney’s brother Ken. Some bowlers were at the beginning of their careers, some were nearing the end. You will read about them all here and their very special feat, and maybe wonder why the bowlers at the other end didn’t strike even once, why many of the greatest bowlers of all-time never took an all-ten, and why all-tens have become much rarer in the last half century.

This book describes an innovative approach to the evaluation of complex health interventions, assessing what interventions work, how and for whom. Rejecting the stalemate between trials and realist evaluation, it draws on the best of both. Randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews offer the least biased means of assessing intervention effects but tell us little scientifically about how interventions work. Policy-makers and practitioners are also not supported to decide which interventions are likely to achieve most benefits in their local contexts. Realists use other forms of evaluation and evidence synthesis exploring how intervention mechanisms interact with context to generate outcomes. But these approaches lack rigour in assessing causality. This book proposes how realist evaluation methods may be incorporated within randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews. This enables evaluations and evidence synthesis to benefit from the more nuanced questions posed within realist enquiry while maintaining rigour in assessing causality.

Currently the private sector is building over 40 megawatts of fossil-fuel thermal plants for each new megawatt of hydropower. This report examines the reasons for building fewer hydropower plants and looks at ways to eliminate some of the drawbacks. It studies ten privately financed hydro schemes, which represent all but the smaller projects likely to be considered for private financing in the future. The projects are located in five countries where the power sector is at different stages of maturity and deregulation. They include multi- and single-purpose projects intended for both domestic supply and export.

Water Reuse: An International Survey of current practice, issues and needs examines water reuse practices around the world from different perspectives. The objective is to show how differently wastewater reuse is conceived and practised around the world as well as to present the varied needs and possibilities for reusing wastewater. In the first section water reuse practices around the world are described for regions having common water availability, reuse needs and social aspects. The second section refers to the “stakeholders” point of view. Each reuse purpose demands different water quality, not only to protect health and the environment but also to fulfil the requirements of the specific reuse. Reuses considered are agricultural, urban agriculture as a special case of the former, municipal and industrial. Alongside these uses, the indirect reuse for human consumption through aquifer recharge is also discussed. The third section deals with emerging and controversial topics. Ethical and economical dilemmas in the field are presented as a subject not frequently addressed in this field. The role of governments in respect of public policy in reuse is discussed as well as the different international criteria and standards for reusing wastewater. The importance of public acceptance and the way to properly handle it is also considered. The fourth section of the book presents contrasting case studies; typical situations in the developed world (Japan and Germany) are compared to those in developing countries (Pakistan and Brazil) for agricultural and industrial reuse. Indirect planned reuse for human consumption (Germany) is compared with an unplanned one (Mexico). The Windhoek, Namibia case study is presented to emphasize why if the direct reuse of wastewater for human consumption has been performed with success for more than 35 years it is still the only example of this type around the world. To illustrate the difficulties of having a common framework for regulating water reuse in several countries, the Mediterranean situation is described. Other case studies presented refer to the reuse situation in Israel, Spain, Cameroon, Nepal and Vietnam, these latter countries being located in water rich areas. This book will be an invaluable information source for all those concerned with water reuse including water utility managers, wastewater policy makers and water resources planners as well as researchers and students in environmental engineering, water resources planning and sanitary engineering. When Cain left the red stain on the appalled earth, there was only him, the restless wanderer of the world. The Red Stain of Cain lies in the anguished questions of God – ‘where is your brother?’ ‘What have you done?’ We have failed one of the first and most basic demands of scripture – to be our brother’s and sister’s keeper. Understanding the separateness requires us to grasp how we come to see another as ‘other’, someone with whom they have severed mutuality and responsibility. For centuries, people have depersonalised or depreciated the Other because of race, class, gender, disability, sexuality and age. These set up a power imbalance that leads to pernicious domination. How on earth has all the violence and power imbalance happened amongst the very people who especially espouse a high view of the cross? Does Christianity have anything to say to the violence of our times? Would it have worked if Jesus had merely sipped poison and perished? Did it have to be so brutal? This book is not a historical study so much as calling for theological antibodies. The cross does not legitimate violence. Quite the opposite. How could it, when the cross was an act of the most violent State savagery and Jesus was a victim? If those who cheer on (or wave away) mob rule, lynch parties or tribal bloodbaths, excuse violence against women and girls or give succour to child abusers’ hold to a high view of communion and the atonement – they do so in violent contradiction with what they believe about the cross of Christ. Based on the idea of valuable personhood, when something happens that demands recompense, redress or payment of some form, violence sets up a sort of transaction (a symbolic exchange) in which value is the currency as in the exchanges of everyday life. Can this throw light on Jesus paying the price for our sins and expose social sins that condone violence and actually encourage it? Can we find some theological antibodies? Dr Chris Steed is a writer, Church minister and academic with a varied career in church and charity leadership. Currently, Chris leads in the Counselling and Theology programme at London School of Theology. His doctorate in Social Sciences through Exeter University proposed a new theory of violence. This report examines specific water harvesting systems in sub-Saharan Africa. Case studies of thirteen systems from six different countries are presented, and conclusions are drawn under the headings of techniques and engineering, production, socio-economic and project management aspects. A number of projects throughout the region, set up in the 1980's, have included water harvesting components. However, there is a wide range of techniques, approaches and costs - and the impact of these projects varies considerably. The majority of systems introduced are for crop production, but there are examples of water harvesting to establish trees in dry areas and for rehabilitation of grazing land also. The need for voluntary participation in all stages of project development is highlighted. It is evident that without this participation there is little or no chance of widespread adoption. The importance of indigenous systems of water harvesting, and their potential role as a base for planning, is stressed in the conclusions.
