Stitch and Bob first meet as infants and become lifelong friends. This is the story of two boys growing up through the years of World War Two and beyond and the adventures they experience together. It highlights the vast contrast between children of that time, who had nothing and those growing up today, who have everything. Who had the better time? I'll leave it to the reader to make that decision. Chris Randall
What role do the church fathers play in the life of a modern Christian? How do they define the experience of holiness? And how can they help us appreciate our current culture while maintaining our traditional values? Wondrous in His Saints posits answers to these and other crucial questions while drawing upon the Eastern Orthodox patristic tradition from Late Antiquity to the early modern era. Its chapters vary in scope, theme, and content, focusing especially on the church fathers' insights into intimate aspects of the spiritual life (including prayer, repentance, and love), as well as their engagement with the artistic and scientific achievements of their wider contexts. Exploring the lives and writings of numerous titans of Orthodoxy (including St. Augustine of Hippo, St. Maximus the Confessor, and St. Gregory Palamas), as well as lesser-known figures (such as St. Guthlac of Crowland and the Chinese Martyrs of the Boxer Rebellion), the author brings to the fore its egalitarian nature; the fact that deification has never been restricted to any time, place, social class, or clerical rank according to the church fathers, but always attainable for men and women seeking communion with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Increasingly, environmental decision making is like playing a multidimensional game of chess. With interactions between the atmosphere, the litho-hydrosphere, and the biosphere, the game is at once a measure of complexity, uncertainty, interdisciplinary acuity, social-environmental sustainability, and social justice for all generations. As such, it demands a systemic point of view. Decision Making for a Sustainable Environment: A Systemic Approach gives readers the tools to replace the dysfunctional, symptomatic decision making that has plunged the world into environmental crises with a systemic approach that fosters social-environmental sustainability. A New Paradigm for Environmental Decision Making Based on the author’s more than 45 years of research and broad, international experience, this book guides policy makers and managers to work with—rather than within—theoretical and methodological frameworks to achieve multidimensional and multilayered policy decisions. It discusses systemic thinking as a rational, viable alternative to competitive, materialistic, and symptomatic decision making. Insights, Approaches, and Examples for Leadership Organized into three parts, the book begins by describing the inviolable biophysical principles that define the limitations of human choices. The second part examines in depth why the conventional command-and-control form of decision making tends to become dysfunctional and fails. It also explains how to break the cycle of such behavior. A case study by Jessica K. La Porte explores the challenges of creating a program of environmentally sustainable decision making. The third part of the book explores what it takes to be a psychologically mature decision maker. A Peaceful Path toward Social-Environmental Sustainability for All Generations Proposing new ways of thinking and problem solving, this book provides readers with the ideas, language, approaches, and examples to move toward genuine social-environmental sustainability. It offers counsel on how to be a psychologically mature trustee of planet Earth and leave a more viable legacy for future generations.
The song "The 12 Days of Christmas" is a mainstay of the holiday season, but the practice of celebrating Christmas as a twelve-day festival fell out of fashion long ago in most cultures. In Celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas, author Chris Marchand explores the history behind the season and individual feast days from December 25 to January 6, and then offers suggestions for how you can celebrate it with your family, church, or community. Along with this, he provides answers to many of the nagging questions surrounding the holiday, such as the history behind the twelve-days song, why December 25 was chosen as the date, and what to do about its supposedly pagan origins. The challenge before us is to first help people see Christmas as a holiday that begins, rather than ends, on December 25, and then to together figure out how to reinvent Christmas in the present by learning how it was celebrated in the past.

The legendary Captain Kirk takes readers behind the scenes of the long-running movie franchise from the first feature film to Star Trek: Generations. In this jam-packed memoir, William Shatner picks up where he left off with Star Trek Memories, recounting in equally intriguing detail what went into the making of the first six Star Trek movies, while including on-the-scene reporting from the set of Star Trek: Generations. Shatner discloses all of the creative turmoil, backstage politics, and production challenges that permeated every one of the movies. And with unflinching candor, he reveals the accumulated personal grudges that haven’t mellowed with the passage of time. Drawing on in-depth interviews as well as Shatner’s private reminiscences, the book recounts how Kirk’s love interest in Star Trek IV began as a role for Eddie Murphy; the creative and production nightmares of Star Trek V; and the rewarding experience of the “classic” crew passing the torch to Patrick Stewart and the cast of The Next Generation. Star Trek Movie Memories contains more than one hundred photographs and illustrations.

An enduring debate among scholars has focused on the degree to which Shakespeare's plays are indebted to the Christian culture in which they were created and the manner of demonstrating that indebtedness. R. Chris Hassel, Jr. points out informed allusions to familiar Pauline and Erasmian Christian passages and themes present in Love's Labor's Lost, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado about Nothing, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, and The Merchant of Venice. He argues that not only did Shakespeare's audience understand these allusions but also that these allusions led the audience to recognize their pertinence to the playwright's uniquely Christian comic vision. Furthermore, Hassel feels this understanding of the relationship between Shakespeare's comic artistry and Christianity leads to a greater appreciation of the plays.
For nearly an entire generation the New York Knicks have been a laughingstock franchise. But in the 1990s they had earned respect not only by winning, but also through brute force. The Knicks fought opponents. They fought each other. They even fought their own coaches at time-- and coach Pat Riley encouraged the nastiness. They never won a championship in those years-- but endeared themselves to millions of fans. Herring delves into the origin, evolution, and eventual demise of the iconic club in eye-opening detail. He pulls no punches-- which is just how those rough-and-tumble Knights would like it. -- adapted from jacket

DI Tom Mariner's home life is beginning to look more and more settled. There's talk of a move to the country, even kids. Mostly, of course, it's Anna doing the talking, and for once Mariner isn't running for the hills at the thought of commitment. But the quiet holiday season is shattered when, on the day of a community carol concert, an explosion rocks the centre of Birmingham. Running behind schedule, Tom and Anna are caught up in the aftermath of the event, but others are not so lucky, including DS Knox and his girlfriend. However, no one knows if the tragedy is accidental or another random act of terrorism. Meanwhile, as friends and colleagues struggle to deal with the after-effects of the explosion, an unexpected reunion with an old friend thrusts Mariner into the unofficial investigation of a violent double murder to which he is inextricably linked. Mariner enters a world of corruption where the boundaries of justice are blurred, making it impossible to distinguish between friend and foe.
In 2016, Americans fed up with the political process vented that frustration with their votes. Republicans nominated for president a wealthy businessman and former reality show host best known on the campaign trail for his sharp rhetoric against immigration and foreign trade. Democrats nearly selected a self-described socialist who ran on a populist platform against the influence of big money in politics. While it is not surprising that Americans would channel their frustrations into votes for contenders who pledge to end business as usual, the truth is that we don’t have to pin our hopes for greater participation on any one candidate. All of us have a say—if we learn, master and practice the skills of effective citizenship. One of the biggest roadblocks to participation in democracy is the perception that privileged citizens and special interests command the levers of power and that everyday Americans can’t fight City Hall. That perception is undoubtedly why a 2015 Pew Charitable Trusts survey found that 74 percent of those Americans surveyed believed that most elected officials didn′t care what people like them thought. Graham and Hand intend to change that conventional wisdom by showing citizens how to flex their citizenship muscles. They describe effective citizenship skills and provide tips from civic experts. Even more importantly, they offer numerous examples of everyday Americans who have used their skills to make democracy respond. The reader will see themselves in these examples of citizens who chose to be victorious participants rather than tranquil spectators in the arena of democracy. By the end of the book, you will have new confidence that citizen participation is the lifeblood of America -- and will be ready to make governments work for you, not the other way around.

In the midst of a world that seems, sometimes, to be spinning outof control, a world where we witness unspeakable acts of evil on our TV news, a world full of discord, hatred, and great pain, it is easy to get discouraged and feel hopeless. It is a fair question to ask, "Is there hope in the midst of a world like ours?" In this book, The Power of One Day's Time, Pastor Chris Slosser answers a resounding yes to this question. In these pages, Pastor Chris shares of numerous biblical characters who were in the midst of great darkness, pain, and hardship like so many of us today, who had a one-day's-time encounter with the Living Lord, Jesus Christ. Many of these characters woke up to what they thought was going to be another horrible, mundane day in the midst of a horrible, mundane life, and then God showed up, and everything changed forever. The good news is that this same Savior is still in the life-changing, eternity-changing business, and he has come to seek and save what is lost (Luke 19:10). At any moment, in one day's time, this same Savior may come on the scene in your life as well and change the whole trajectory of your life, now and always, and that is reason for great and sure hope. Jesus Christ was a miraculous Savior in Bible times, and Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). At any given moment, Jesus Christ may very well have a miracle with your name written all over it.
None of us have been through anything comparable to all that Job endured. Although he had times of doubt and faced the temptation of taking his wife's advice of just cursing God and dying, he didn't give in to that temptation, and he remained true to God. The result of his faithfulness was that God restored everything he had lost and rewarded him with twice as much as he ever had before the trial. This study of the journey of Job's life will encourage you and help you understand that God wants to use your test to elevate you to levels you have never even imagined. God wants to know that He can trust you, and that YOU TRUST HIM, regardless of the situations you find yourself in. Let this study prepare you not only for your test, but for your testimony of victory!
Religion Before Christ; The Old Testament; The New Testament; The Birth of Christianity & Questions of Faith. This book is written to help any person brand new to the church. It covers basic information to gain a general understanding of Christianity, covering the history as well as the Gospel and Bible stories. About life before Christ with Judaism and the Old Testament. About Jesus and the New Testament and just how his coming really did change everything for everyone. In this book I try to answer all the questions I first had when I started attending church. What is the eucharist? Why recite all those old creeds and who wrote them anyway? Why all the robes and ceremony? From the early church in Jerusalem to the Roman Empire when it embraced Christianity. To the Reformation and the split from Rome. And how can the Bible, written thousands of years ago, be able to give comfort, strength, hope and faith to someone living in today's society?
This volume covers the essence of six world religions: Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism. The book is a course companion especially suitable for Years 7-9. It may be used alongside existing Religion for Today titles and titles for Key Stage 3.
Chris O’Leary looks afresh at the reasons for prosocial work choices in the first substantive critique of Public Service Motivation (PSM). With critical analysis of theoretical and empirical research to date, this book explores the pros and cons of PSM and interrogates the reasons why people choose to work in the public and third sectors. It proposes an alternative theory for the pursuit of service, rooted in rational choice theory, that shows public servants are expressly motivated to confirm their values and identity through their work. For those involved in public policy, administration and management, this is a constructive and stimulating review of an important but often neglected aspect of the sector.
Presents an introduction to the fiddle, explores how musicians incorporate the instrument into different genres, and offers instruction on playing standard songs.
Have you ever heard a line in a song that took your breath away? Or been reduced to tears by a deeply significant phrase in a movie? Have you ever heard a 'simple truth' that resonates perfectly with you? In The Power of the Second Question, psychologist Chris Skellett reveals how you can learn to harness the power of personal reflection to capture your 'simple truths' about the world. You will be encouraged to lift yourself up from the routines of everyday thinking and take time to consider what life is all about for you. Each concise chapter suggests ideas, gives examples and reviews the importance of personal insight. You are then invited to reflect upon your own wisdom in key areas of your life and to consolidate what you have learned from life so far. At the end of the process, you will have developed a much broader appreciation of who you are and what you have learned along life's journey.
Seeking the Truth explores the real truth about our existence; where we came from and why; and who created us. It examines the nature and character of God and how we can come to know Him personally. In an age of skepticism, this book seeks only the truth, searching for the real meaning and purpose of life. Those looking for the truth will find it a spiritual journey. They will come to know and have a restored relationship with our Creator. The most ancient of all books, the Bible, is just as relevant today as ever, prophesizing about what will happen in the future, and when the end times draw near. Seeking the Truth takes readers on a journey of discovery. The author too explores and initiates his own spiritual voyage, a pilgrimage of discovery. Learn the truth about life itself; how and where we came from; and where we are going in the future.
Many complex aeronautical design problems can be formulated with efficient multi-objective evolutionary optimization methods and game strategies. This book describes the role of advanced innovative evolution tools in the solution, or the set of solutions of single or multi disciplinary optimization. These tools use the concept of multi-population, asynchronous parallelization and hierarchical topology which allows different models including precise, intermediate and approximate models with each node belonging to the different hierarchical layer handled by a different Evolutionary Algorithm. The efficiency of evolutionary algorithms for both single and multi-objective optimization problems are significantly improved by the coupling of EAs with games and in particular by a new dynamic methodology named “Hybridized Nash-Pareto games”. Multi objective Optimization techniques and robust design problems taking into account uncertainties are introduced and explained in detail. Several applications dealing with civil aircraft and UAV, UCAV systems are implemented numerically and discussed. Applications of increasing optimization complexity are presented as well as two hands-on test cases problems. These examples focus on aeronautical applications and will be useful to the practitioner in the laboratory or in industrial design environments. The evolutionary methods coupled with games presented in this volume can be applied to other areas including surface and marine transport, structures, biomedical engineering, renewable energy and environmental problems. This book will be of interest to students, young scientists and engineers involved in the field of multi physics optimization.

What life is really like on board British Merchant Ships. Landlubbers will probably believe that the stories are a work of fiction, but every seaman will nod their heads knowingly and mutter, 'That reminds me of...
George Berkeley's mainstream legacy amongst critics and philosophers, from Samuel Johnson to Bertrand Russell, has tended to concern his claim that the objects of perception are in fact nothing more than our ideas. Yet there's more to Berkeley than idealism alone, and the poets now grouped under the label 'Romanticism' took up Berkeley's ideas in especially strange and surprising ways. As this book shows, the poets Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Shelley focused less on Berkeley's arguments for idealism than they did on his larger, empirically-derived claim that nature constitutes a kind of linguistic system. It is through that 'ghostly language' that we might come to know ourselves, each other, and even God. This book is a reappraisal of the role that Berkeley's ideas played in Romanticism, and it pursues his spiritualized philosophy across a range of key Romantic-period poems. But it is also a re-reading of Berkeley himself, as a thinker who was deeply concerned with language and with written—even literary—style. In that sense, it offers an incisive case study into the reception of philosophical ideas into the workings of poetry, and of the role of poetics within the history of ideas more broadly.
