Advancing a new concept of the meme, called the ‘technical meme’, as the primary agent of cognitive extension and technical embodiment, the author proposes a theory of the ‘extended self’ encompassing material and spatial as well as psychological and social elements. Drawing upon research from philosophy, psychology and the neurosciences, the book presents a new approach to environmental and cultural studies that will appeal to a broad readership searching for insights into the crisis.

The October 2008 Cultural Studies Review is a special issue focusing on cultures of panic, particularly recent examples of moral panic arising from issues of race, gender and sexuality. The diverse essays deal with 'men of Middle Eastern appearance', the trial of Private Kovko, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the use of Ritalin, concerns around children and sexuality in Australia, and arts funding in the United States during the 'culture wars'. The moral panic has centrally to do with the behaviour of crowds, particularly the virtual crowds created by the mass media. It's a mechanism of expulsion, and thus at the same time of group solidarity. It's also a particularly powerful genre of the tabloid media: in its identification and shaming of deviant social groups it rigidly defines and reinforces moral norms, and is complicit with political strategies of consolidation and othering which create and depend on a sense of horror at refugees who wilfully throw their children overboard or push in to the front of the 'queue', at paedophiles grooming children over the internet, at drug-crazed criminals and bingeing teenagers... The challenge is to move beyond the realisation that moral panics are not rationally constructed to an analysis of the passional bases of the social order, and to an understanding of how our politics might deal with this without itself falling into the contagion of panic. The diverse collection of essays gathered together in this edition takes up that challenge.

Should I go downbeat, with a column about the travails of fallen Super Bowl hero Timmy Smith, or upbeat with a column about Bob Sepulveda, Alamogordo High School's fine and dedicated boys track coach? I flipped a coin, and it came down on its edge. The face is, in an ironic sort of way, the two go together. Sepulveda is a perfect example of the many scholastic coaches who send a positive message to their athletes. Smith is a perfect example of an athlete who, apparently, never got the message. Smith's story, of course, was not always so downbeat. Six years ago, in fact the Hobbs native seemed to have the world at his feet. What a story it was Smith, a superstar running back at Hobbs High School, had overcome a disappointing, injury-plagued college career at Texas Tech to make the roster of the National Football League's Washington Redskins. January 31st, 1988, the 23-year-oldrookie made Super Bowl History with a record 204 years rushing in the Redskins'42-10 victory over the Denver Broncos. The city of Hobbs and the state of New Mexico were justifiably proud of this native son. Before and after the Super Bowl, memorials praising Smith were introduced in the New Mexico Legislature. On February 15, two of those memorials were approved by the state senate-despite embarrassing news that Smith owed nearly $6,000 in delinquent child support payments. The news regarding Smith never really got better. When Charles du Preez and his father were discovered hiding in the mountains of their eastern Free State farm, they were taken prisoner by the English and transported in open coal trucks to Durban. From there they began a harrowing journey aboard the SS Aurania to the prisoner-of-war camps of Umballa and Solon in India, where Charles was the youngest inmate. Back in South Africa, Charles’s mother and siblings, apprehended while fleeing the Khakis during Lord Kitchener’s destructive ‘scorched earth’ campaign, were interned in the infamous Winburg concentration camp. Based on an account Charles wrote later in life as well as other notable oral and documentary sources, including a diary kept by Charles’s mother during the war, Boer Boy tracks the Du Preez family’s wartime experiences. It culminates in Charles and his father’s repatriation to South Africa, where the family was reunited and returned home to the ruins of their farm to start again. Enthralling, poignant and richly informative, this is a valuable addition to the history of the Anglo-Boer War.
