Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL)-based data links are attractive due to their low-power dissipation and low-cost manufacturability. This chapter reviews the foundations for this technology, as well as the device and module design challenges of extending the data rate beyond the current level. We begin with a review of data communications from the business perspective, and continue with a brief discussion of the current and future standards. This is followed by a survey of recent advances in VCSELs, including data links operating at 28Gb/s. We review the recent efforts on ultra-fast data links and discuss the advantages of the different approaches. We also examine key design aspects of optical transceiver modules and we focus our discussion on novel applications in high-performance computing using both multi-mode and single-mode fiber optics. We highlight the importance of the device/component-level and system-level modeling and show some modeling examples with comparison to measured data. We conclude with a comparison of the VCSEL-based data links with other competing technologies, including silicon photonics and short-cavity edge emitting lasers.

In Faitheist, Chris Stedman tells his own story to challenge the orthodoxies of this movement and make a passionate argument that atheists should engage religious diversity respectfully. Becoming aware of injustice, and craving community, Stedman became a “born-again” Christian in late childhood. The idea of a community bound by God’s love—a love that was undeserved, unending, and guaranteed—captivated him. It was, he writes, a place to belong and a framework for making sense of suffering. But Stedman’s religious community did not embody this idea of God’s love: they were staunchly homophobic at a time when he was slowly coming to realize that he was gay. His own religious beliefs might have fallen away, but his desire to change the world for the better remained. British Pentecostalism is linked to the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles through T. B. Barratt and Anglican vicar Alexander A. Boddy at Sunderland. Boddy’s experience and subsequent ministry set the foundation in Britain for the rise of the Apostolic Church, the Elim Church and the Assemblies of God. Each of these Pentecostal denominations had their roots in Wales. Following the Welsh Revival of 1904–05 some (enthused by their experience) sought a deeper relationship with God; and this search ultimately led them to Pentecostalism. A group of eager believers emerged around the town of Crosskeys in South East Wales. By 1912 they had established the Crosskeys Full Gospel Mission, which soon became a centre for Pentecostal activity. The central role of the Crosskeys group is seen in the development of the Assemblies of God in Wales and Monmouthshire denomination which was in existence by 1921. The Crosskeys based group had been in correspondence with the American Assemblies of God (AG) regarding joining that denomination as an official presbytery. It was this action that caused a group of like-minded English Pentecostals to pursue the establishment of the Assemblies of God in Great Britain and Ireland in 1924. This British denomination incorporated some thirty-eight Welsh Pentecostal assemblies. This book considers some of the important theological, political and social influences which shaped the brand of Pentecostalism that emerged in South East Wales in the early twentieth century—a movement which was to have a wide ranging influence on subsequent Pentecostal history far beyond the borders of Wales.

And he was on real friendly terms with them, as likely as not he was more than half Faerid himself, and he picked up on more than a few of their tricks, he did. They say he could reach out and touch a thing with his little finger and turn it to gold. Al demonstrated as he spoke. And this here finger he could use to turn things to cherry red, and the long one was for aquamarine, and the pointer finger made things violet. They say he made a fortune painting billboards. But that's not all, not by a long shot. They say he knew the old songs, for everything from changing the weather to getting rid of warts to making brownies. And you never knew when he was going to show up, cause he could just come and go as he pleased with nothing more than a snap of his fingers. You just never knew.
