Journalist Typo Blod is struggling to persuade CitySidewalk magazine's editor, Jonas Wheeler, to commission some articles from him when he encounters C.O. Jones, a mysterious, homeless character, begging on a commuter train. Jones claims to be trapped in a "vicious circle" and shows Blod a book that has a dramatic and physical effect: It causes Blod to slip through a crack in reality and find himself in the driving seat of a car, on a road nothing to do with the city in which he thought he lived. In the part historical, part fantastical city of Fulcrum, Jones re-appears to provoke Blod with questions about distant memories. They are clues and Blod's answers propel him along an increasingly bizarre storyline, in which he is absorbed by the scenes of Edward Hopper's paintings like a fly in amber, Time halts at the instant depicted in Hopper’s most famous works and Blod falls in love with Ellen Bogen, the subject of the painting Summertime.Liquidambar combines the noir atmosphere of the Philip Marlowe adventures with the characters and imagery of Hopper's paintings in a magical surrealism detective story."--

The independent investigations some 70 years ago by E. G. D. Murray and colleagues in Cambridge (UK) and J,H. H. Pirie in Johannesburg (South Mrica) resulted in the first detailed descriptions of listeriosis (in both instances in small animals), together with the isolation and naming of Lis teria monocytogenes. These descriptions in 1926 and 1927 show the pre cision and care of these experimentalists, for not only did they show much skill and attention to detail but also great insight in surmising that the consumption of contaminated food was associated with the trans mission of listeriosis. In the words of Pirie in 1927, 'Infection can be pro duced by subcutaneous inoculation or by feeding and it is thought that it is by feeding that the disease is spread in nature. ' These observations were largely forgotten and listeriosis was regarded as a rather obscure disease of animals and occasionally humans. However, the 1980s saw dramatic changes and the 'elevation' of Listeria to a topic of concern not only amongst microbiologists (particularly food micro biologists) but also the general public.
Human illness attributed to foodborne pathogenic microorganisms has been prominent in the mass media in recent years. The Practical Food Microbiology Series has been devised to give practical and accurate information about specific organisms of concern to public health. The information is designed for use by those in the food industry working in manufacturing, retailing and quality assurance, those in associated professional sectors e.g. public health, and students in each of these areas. The series is unique in its practical approach as it draws on real life situations to highlight practical means for controlling the organism in foods. Salmonella species are arguably the most commonly reported food associated human pathogens in the developed world. They are zoonotic agents and many different animal reservoirs are known. They can be found widely in the environment and may also establish in food processing environments. Over 2000 serotypes of Salmonella have been identified to-date, some of which cause very serious illness in humans particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly. Although rare, illness may result in fatality or long term debility and sequelae. Salmonella spp. are so widespread in raw foods and food source environments that the food industry has to maintain constant vigilance regarding contamination in raw materials, effectiveness of food processing systems and control of finished product characteristics for assuring food safety with respect to this important pathogen. This book details the causes of selected outbreaks and assesses the lessons that can be learnt from them. It examines the characteristics of Salmonella spp. and identifies factors that make foods susceptible to contamination and growth of these organisms. Specific product sectors are used to indicate practical measures that can be applied to control Salmonella spp. in foods and minimise their potential to cause harm to the consumer. It also provides guidance in selecting effective sampling plans and test methods to monitor and detect the organism and offers pragmatic advice on action to be taken when the organism is detected during monitoring programmes.

Lieutenant, I'm neither a member of the NAACP nor of the White Citizens' Council," said Colonel Ritter. "But I would have preferred the Department of the Army to send me a White lieutenant instead of a Colored one like you." This is the story of Lieutenant Neal Williams' struggle when, in the early 1950s, he was assigned as a platoon leader in an all-white Army Infantry Regiment in Germany. This assignment placed him "on the color front" of a racially segregated Army where it was not accepted policy to have a Colored officer in charge of White soldiers. While on the color front, though not always successful, Lieutenant Williams had to reach deep inside himself for strength and determination to meet the challenges and dilemmas that extended from his regimental commander to his company nemesis, and from his girlfriend back home to the array of women ready to comfort soldiers regardless of their race.

The information is designed for use by those in the food industry working in manufacturing, retailing and quality assurance, those in associated professional sectors e.g. public health, and students in each of these areas. Clostridium botulinum produces a toxin which causes the severe, often fatal illness, botulism. It is a potential hazard associated with a wide range of both ambient stable and chilled foods. Foodborne botulism still occurs all around the world. As new outbreaks are reported implicating yet more food types and food processes, so the food industry needs to regularly review processes and product characteristics to assure safety.

Wanted and Welcomed. Seekers of all kinds. Come take a little comfort and refuge from the Great Age of Sound. Discover what the ancient bell makers knew. Find what all people once knew. Travel yourself for a few hours and you may find it to be still true today. Sadly, the bell makers, over time, were replaced by noisemakers. They peddled work with little purpose and great distractions to fill what they called the emptiness inside. No one before then knew it was called empty. Folks then, saw it more as the vast endlessness of possibility. But soon, the people were so filled with noise, they could no longer hear themselves. They could no longer hear the voice within. The people became so filled with noise and distraction they had no room left inside for even one more clear, radiant note from a bell. This began The Great Age of Sound. But, before The Great Age of Sound, there were bell makers. And they were magic. This is the story of one such man.
