Looks at the Daoist Zhuangzis critique of Confucianism. The Daoist Zhuangzi has often been read as a mystical philosopher. But there is another tradition, beginning with the Han dynasty historian Sima Qian, which sees him as a critic of the Confucians. Kim-chong Chong analyzes the Inner Chapters of the Zhuangzi, demonstrating how Zhuangzi criticized the pre-Qin Confucians through metaphorical inversion and parody. This is indicated by the subtitle, Blinded by the Human, which is an inversion of the Confucian philosopher Xunzis remark that Zhuangzi was blinded by heaven and did not know the human. Chong compares Zhuangzis Daoist thought to Confucianism, as exemplified by Confucius, Mencius, and Xunzi. By analyzing and comparing the different implications of concepts such as heaven, heart-mind, and transformation, Chong shows how Zhuangzi can be said to provide the resources for a more pluralistic and liberal philosophy than the Confucians.

An uncoded multimedia transmission (UMT) system is one that skips quantization and entropy coding in compression and all subsequent binary operations, including channel coding and bit-to-symbol mapping of modulation. By directly transmitting non-binary symbols with amplitude modulation, the uncoded system avoids the annoying cliff effect observed in the coded transmission system. This advantage makes uncoded transmission more suited to both unicast in varying channel conditions and multicast to heterogeneous users. Particularly, in the first part of Uncoded Multimedia Transmission, we consider how to improve the efficiency of uncoded transmission and make it on par with coded transmission. We then address issues and challenges regarding how to better utilize temporal and spatial correlation of images and video in the uncoded transmission, to achieve the optimal transmission performance. Next, we investigate the resource allocation problem for uncoded transmission, including subchannel, bandwidth and power allocation. By properly allocating these resources, uncoded transmission can achieve higher efficiency and more robust performance. Subsequently, we consider the image and video delivery in MIMO broadcasting networks with diverse channel quality and varying numbers of antennas across receivers. Finally, we investigate the cases where uncoded transmission can be used in conjunction with digital transmission for a balanced efficiency and adaptation capability. This book is the very first monograph in the general area of uncoded multimedia transmission written in a self-contained format. It addresses both the fundamentals and the applications of uncoded transmission. It gives a systematic introduction to the fundamental theory and concepts in this field, and at the same time, also presents specific applications that reveal the great potential and impacts for the technologies generated from the research in this field. By concentrating several important studies and developments currently taking place in the field of uncoded transmission in a single source, this book can reduce the time and cost required to learn and improve skills and knowledge in the field. Selfish, obscenely rich, insular, and opportunistic: these remain how Chinese minorities in Indonesia are perceived by the indigenous population. However, far from being passive victims of discrimination and marginalisation, Chong presents a forceful case in which Chinese Indonesians possess the agency to shape their future in the country, particularly in the changing political, business, and socio-cultural environment after the fall of Suharto. While a lack of good governance that promotes the rule of law and accountability allows or even encourages some Chinese to maintain the status quo by perpetuating corrupt business practices inherited from Suharto’s New Order regime, there are other Chinese Indonesians who make full use of the democratic space opened up under the new administrations, acting as agents of reform by participating in electoral politics and establishing inter-ethnic socio-cultural organisations. Building on Anthony Giddens’s structure-agency theory and Pierre Bourdieu’s notions of habitus and field, Chong shows that the Chinese minorities have played an active role in the democratic process, even though they continue to occupy an ambivalent position in Indonesia. This book introduces both conceptual and procedural aspects of cutting-edge data science methods, such as dynamic data visualization, artificial neural networks, ensemble methods, and text mining. There are at least two unique elements that can set the book apart from its rivals. First, most students in social sciences, engineering, and business took at least one class in introductory statistics before learning data science. However, usually these courses do not discuss the similarities and differences between traditional statistics and modern data science; as a result learners are disoriented by this seemingly drastic paradigm shift. In reaction, some traditionalists reject data science altogether while some beginning data analysts employ data mining tools as a “black box”, without a comprehensive view of the foundational differences between traditional and modern methods (e.g., dichotomous thinking vs. pattern recognition, confirmation vs. exploration, single method vs. triangulation, single sample vs. cross-validation etc.). This book delineates the transition between classical methods and data science (e.g. from p value to Log Worth, from resampling to ensemble methods, from content analysis to text mining etc.). Second, this book aims to widen the learner's horizon by covering a plethora of software tools. When a technician has a hammer, every problem seems to be a nail. By the same token, many textbooks focus on a single software package only, and consequently the learner tends to fit the problem with the tool, but not the other way around. To rectify the situation, a competent analyst should be equipped with a tool set, rather than a single tool. For example, when the analyst works with crucial data in a highly regulated industry, such as pharmaceutical and banking, commercial software modules (e.g., SAS) are indispensable. For a mid-size and small company, open-source packages such as Python would come in handy. If the research goal is to create an executive summary quickly, the logical choice is rapid model comparison. If the analyst would like to explore the data by asking what-if questions, then dynamic graphing in JMP Pro is a better option. This book uses concrete examples to explain the pros and cons of various software applications.

Rooted in behavioral psychology, RL is one of the primary strands of machine learning. Different from other machine learning algorithms, such as supervised learning and unsupervised learning, the key feature of RL is its unique learning paradigm, i.e., trial-and-error. Combined with the deep neural networks, deep RL become so powerful that many complicated systems can be automatically managed by AI agents at a superhuman level. On the other hand, CPSs are envisioned to revolutionize our society in the near future. Such examples include the emerging smart buildings, intelligent transportation, and electric grids. However, the conventional hand-programming controller in CPSs could neither handle the increasing complexity of the system, nor automatically adapt itself to new situations that it has never encountered before. The problem of how to apply the existing deep RL algorithms, or develop new RL algorithms to enable the real-time adaptive CPSs, remains open. This book aims to establish a linkage between the two domains by systematically introducing RL foundations and algorithms, each supported by one or a few state-of-the-art CPS examples to help readers understand the intuition and usefulness of RL techniques.
