Considers colonial school–prison systems in relation to the self-determination of Native communities, nations, and peoples The School–Prison Trust describes interrelated histories, ongoing ideologies, and contemporary expressions of what the authors call the “school–prison trust”: a conquest strategy encompassing the boarding school and juvenile prison models, and deployed in the long war against Native peoples. At its heart, the book is a constellation of stories of Indigenous self-determination in the face of this ongoing conquest. Following the stories of an incarcerated young man named Jakes, the authors consider features of school–prison relations for young Native people to ask urgent questions about Indigenous sovereignty, conquest, survivance, and refusal.
My second book for Christ, God Is Still Here, There, and Everywhere, is written as my continuation walk with his blessings as in my first book. Our Lord God is truly a real God that loves his children. He is the One and Only heavenly Father to everyone. He was there when I came to him in 1994, and he is still here with me today. God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He taught me to be strong in my faith, to walk right with him, and to draw wisdom from him. Before knowing Christ, I have no experience of what the real meaning of a relationship with God was like. I was a Taoist (idol-worshipper) then, and everything that I have done was more like traditional beliefs (legalistic rules). I was struggling with it, and God opened my eyes to see his guidance. He gave me a choice to choose between slavery and freedom. I chose freedom. I can never forget the day God found me. He brought me out of the miry clay and made me what I am today. My phone stopped ringing that day, and I lost all my friends, and Jesus said in his clear voice that he will be my friend. As children of God, I called myself a rock star as God is my Rock, and I am one of his many, many stars in the sky. Genesis 15:5 reads, "He took him outside and said, 'Look up at the sky and count the stars--if indeed you can count them.' Then he said to him, 'So shall your offspring be.'" I thanked God for His true love for me. He gave me a chance to share my experiences as in testimonies in this book. If God can do it for me, he will do it for you too. Without God, I am nothing. All glory and honor to the one true Lord God Almighty. Amen.

Late Ancient Knowing explores how people in late antiquity went about knowing their world and how this knowing shaped late ancient lives. Each essay is dedicated to a single concept--'Animal,' 'Demon,' 'Countryside,' 'Christianization,' 'God'--studying the ways in which individuals and societies in this period created and interacted with visible and invisible realities. Rather than narrating late ancient history based on facts defensible in modern historical terms, these essays attempt to create histories based on what are now considered late ancient fictions, the now-discarded paradigms of late ancient thought"--Provided by publisher.

And once again, the tales are totally supported by artist Juan Calle's dynamic, colorful illustrations." - Randomly Reading "Along with its playful text and easy to follow storyline, The Year of the Rooster’s dazzling illustrations by Juan Calle offer children adorable cartoon-like characters to connect with. There will be those who have scooped up the books as they emerged each year: but the good news is that it really doesn’t matter when you discover these fun stories... they are extra special in their own year of the Chinese cycle or when their particular animal is significant, but young children can now enjoy all twelve stories, all year round... The Year of the Rooster is a fun, feel-good story that is sure to set young children crowing for more " - Mirrors, Windows, Doors
For more than half a century, Chinese-Western comparative literature has been recognized as a formal academic discipline, but critics and scholars in the field have done little to develop a viable, common basis for comparison between these disparate literatures. In this pioneering book, Cecile Chu-chin Sun establishes repetition as the ideal perspective from which to compare the poetry and poetics from these two traditions. Sun contends that repetition is at the heart of all that defines the lyric as a unique art form and, by closely examining its use in Chinese and Western poetry, she demonstrates howone can identify important points of convergence and divergence. Through a representative sampling of poems from both traditions, she illustrates how the irreducible generic nature of the lyric transcends linguistic and cultural barriers but also reveals the fundamental distinctions between the traditions. Most crucially, she dissects the two radically different conceptualizations of reality—mimesis and xing—that serve as underlying principles for the poetic practices of each tradition. Skillfully integrating theory and practice, The Poetics of Repetition in English and Chinese Lyric Poetryprovides a much-needed model for future study of Chinese and English poetry as well as lucid, succinct interpretations of individual poems.

The Christian Church faces many challenges today that threaten to disrupt its life and mission. A serious biblically based study into what is the nature and mission of the Church is vital. This book searches into the value and scope of understanding the Church as the creation of the Holy Trinity through the biblical covenants. It analyses the contribution of John Zizioulas and Jurgen Moltmann for this purpose. A proposal is then made of how Covenant is a new perspective that may synthesis and expand on their insights.

This book evaluates the common criticism that Christianity in Asia is westernized. Since the 1980s, Asian evangelical theologians and missiologists argue that the intrusion of Western theology is responsible for the Western and, hence, alien expressions of Christianity in Asia. Yet, in Singapore, the number of Christians has increased over the last few decades. Empirical evidence demonstrates that younger Chinese Singaporeans convert from Buddhism or Taoism to Christianity partly because they perceive it as a "rational" religion over Buddhism or Taoism, which are viewed as "irrational" or "superstitious." Not only do many converts favor Christianity as a rational religion, but they do not regard Christianity as a Western religion at the point of their conversion. What accounts for those recent developments? This study explores the processes of modernization and globalization as important factors, impacting religious change in Singapore. Personal, contextual, and structural elements actually influence one's religion of choice. In facilitating effective mission, one must qualify the use of the categories, "Asian" and "Western," because religious and cultural boundaries overlap. What matters most in missiology is discerning how the gospel of Jesus Christ engages the self-understanding and lived realities of ethnic and religious others in diverse cultural settings.
This book was divinely inspired by God and was birthed during prayer. Its a compilation of several sermons of Bishop Hugh Thomas that highlights the importance and understanding of prayer. To sum him up, he is a "simple man with a complex mind." He believes in kneeology, learning Gods hidden treasures in prayer. In this book, you will learn how to pray the effective fervent prayer, be a living sacrifice, and the benefits of prayer. I can guarantee you havent heard anything like this before because the words are God inspired and not man inspired. How do I know that? Because his words are referenced with scriptures from the Word of God that have been wordsmithed by the Spirit of God. Thats why its important to read and study Gods Word. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15, King James Version).

Mirroring worldwide debates on social class, literacy rates, and social change, this study explores the intersection between reading and social class in Singapore, one of the top scorers on the Programme for International Assessment (PISA) tests, and questions the rhetoric of social change that does not take into account local spaces and practices. This comparative study of reading practices in an elite school and a government school in Singapore draws on practice and spatial perspectives to provide critical insight into how taken-for-granted practices and spaces of reading can be in fact unacknowledged spaces of inequity. Acknowledging the role of social class in shaping reading education is a start to reconfiguring current practices and spaces for more effective and equitable reading practices. This book shows how using localized, contextualized approaches sensitive to the home, school, national and global contexts can lead to more targeted policy and practice transformation in the area of reading instruction and intervention. Chapters in the book include: • Becoming a Reader: Home-School Connections • Singaporean Boys Constructing Global Literate Selves: School-Nation Connections • Levelling the Reading Gap: Socio-Spatial Perspectives The book will be relevant to literacy scholars and educators, library science researchers and sociologists interested in the intersection of class and literacy practices in the 21st century.

This volume examines their influence on late antique ÊChristianity and provides an insightful portrait of their legacies in the modern world. Departing from the traditionally patriarchal view, Melania gives a poignant and sometimes surprising account of how the rise of Christian institutions in the Roman Empire shaped our understanding of womenÕs roles in the larger world.
