With this book, Cheryl Hicks brings to light the voices and viewpoints of black working-class women, especially southern migrants, who were the subjects of urban and penal reform in early-twentieth-century New York. Hicks compares the ideals of racial uplift and reform programs of middle-class white and black activists to the experiences and perspectives of those whom they sought to protect and, often, control. In need of support as they navigated the discriminatory labor and housing markets and contended with poverty, maternity, and domestic violence, black women instead found themselves subject to hostility from black leaders, urban reformers, and the police. Still, these black working-class women struggled to uphold their own standards of respectable womanhood. Through their actions as well as their words, they challenged prevailing views regarding black women and morality in urban America. Drawing on extensive archival research, Hicks explores the complexities of black working-class women's lives and illuminates the impact of racism and sexism on early-twentieth-century urban reform and criminal justice initiatives.

Black Internationalist Feminism examines how African American women writers affiliated themselves with the post-World War II Black Communist Left and developed a distinct strand of feminism. This vital yet largely overlooked feminist tradition built upon and critically retheorized the postwar Left's "nationalist internationalism," which connected the liberation of Blacks in the United States to the liberation of Third World nations and the worldwide proletariat. Black internationalist feminism critiques racist, heteronormative, and masculinist articulations of nationalism while maintaining the importance of national liberation movements for achieving Black women's social, political, and economic rights. Cheryl Higashida shows how Claudia Jones, Lorraine Hansberry, Alice Childress, Rosa Guy, Audre Lorde, and Maya Angelou worked within and against established literary forms to demonstrate that nationalist internationalism was linked to struggles against heterosexism and patriarchy. Exploring a diverse range of plays, novels, essays, poetry, and reportage, Higashida illustrates how literature is a crucial lens for studying Black internationalist feminism because these authors were at the forefront of bringing the perspectives and problems of black women to light against their marginalization and silencing. The coming of the Marietta and Cincinnati Railroad and establishment of a freight station in 1866 precipitated the community's creation and gave it the name Madeira, chosen for the surname of the rail line's treasurer. Public schools, churches, and small businesses developed to serve a flourishing new population. Madeira incorporated in 1910, and citizens began a century of hard work, service, and neighborliness that makes the official motto of "friendly town" especially apt. The town of Rogue River is a small community in southern Oregon located on the banks of the famous river for which it was named. Situated on Interstate 5, just 59 miles north of the California border, it lies between the cities of Grants Pass and Medford in the beautiful Rogue Valley. Founded in the midst of Native American wars and prolific gold mining, the town was originally called Tailholt before becoming Woodville. It incorporated and took its final name in 1912. A town proud of its accomplishments, it has nevertheless managed to preserve its history and maintain its small-town atmosphere and historical value, with many of the original buildings still in use. Along with sensational steelhead fishing, Rogue River is famous for its annual Rooster Crow festivities held on the last Saturday of each June.
The first full-length account integrating both the cognitive and sociological aspects of reading and writing in the academy, this unique volume covers educational research on reading and writing, rhetorical research on writing in the disciplines, cognitive research on expertise in ill-defined problems, and sociological and historical research on the professions. The author produced this volume as a result of a research program aimed at understanding the relationship between two concepts -- literacy and expertise -- which traditionally have been treated as quite separate phenomena. A burgeoning literature on reading and writing in the academy has begun to indicate fairly consistent patterns in how students acquire literacy practices. This literature shows, furthermore, that what students do is quite distinct from what experts do. While many have used these results as a starting point for teaching students "how to be expert," the author has chosen instead to ask about the interrelationship between expert and novice practice, seeing them both as two sides of the same project: a cultural-historical "professionalization project" aimed at establishing and preserving the professional privilege. The consequences of this "professionalization project" are examined using the discipline of academic philosophy as the "site" for the author's investigations. Methodologically unique, these investigations combine rhetorical analysis, protocol analysis, and the analysis of classroom discourse. The result is a complex portrait of how the participants in this humanistic discipline use their academic literacy practices to construct and reconstruct a great divide between expert and lay knowledge. This monograph thus extends our current understanding of the rhetoric of the professions and examines its implications for education.
D. J. O'Connor had spent most of his adult life trying to find two Union Army officers that his family had assigned to have been from the ranks of the heavenly host because of help that they had provided to members of the family during the Civil War. Both men had done God's work on earth to benefit not only his family but the whole idea of the greater good. Following a clue, DJ went to a home in Biscay, Colorado, where he was welcomed by the family of not only Second Lieutenant Devon W. Labatte, the man he had been told he would find there but the late Major Dr. Earl Townsend, the other officer he had been looking for. The family invited DJ to sit with them to watch over Devon while he slept because they knew that his time was near. As he was seeing the man that he had so much appreciation, DJ's curiosity was racing. Surveying the room, DJ saw the evidence of a life well spent with tokens of travel and remembrances of special people and events. One special event was remembered in a very large painting with both men's families along with three other families, and on a small table near the bed was the photograph that the painter had used as a guide. DJ asked about the painting and how all the people in it had become intertwined into one family. For the rest of the day, DJ listened intensely to the story of how these two men who had been raised in different parts of the country and with very different financial backgrounds had overcome many obstacles, lived through the war, become friends, fought inner demons, and raised their families together, all the time treating everyone with respect and giving assistance to others as second nature.
In antebellum America, both North and South emerged as modernizing, capitalist societies. Work bells, clock towers, and personal timepieces increasingly instilled discipline on one’s day, which already was ordered by religious custom and nature’s rhythms. The Civil War changed that, argues Cheryl A. Wells. Overriding antebellum schedules, war played havoc with people’s perception and use of time. For those closest to the fighting, the war’s effect on time included disrupted patterns of sleep, extended hours of work, conflated hours of leisure, indefinite prison sentences, challenges to the gender order, and desecration of the Sabbath. Wells calls this phenomenon “battle time.” To create a modern war machine military officers tried to graft the antebellum authority of the clock onto the actual and mental terrain of the Civil War. However, as Wells’s coverage of the Manassas and Gettysburg battles shows, military engagements followed their own logic, often without regard for the discipline imposed by clocks. Wells also looks at how battle time’s effects spilled over into periods of inaction, and she covers not only the experiences of soldiers but also those of nurses, prisoners of war, slaves, and civilians. After the war, women returned, essentially, to an antebellum temporal world, says Wells. Elsewhere, however, postwar temporalities were complicated as freedmen and planters, and workers and industrialists renegotiated terms of labor within parameters set by the clock and nature. A crucial juncture on America’s path to an ordered relationship to time, the Civil War had an acute effect on the nation’s progress toward a modernity marked by multiple, interpenetrating times largely based on the clock.

The author proposes that the conditions, events, and experiences that contribute to serious mental health problems for a percentage of women, will at some point be experienced by all. A Letter from Sheri is a story inspired by the 1986 California serial killer murders executed by Charles Ng and Leonard Lake. I began writing a book in 2001 about how it felt to be adopted. As a child, I was led to believe that my biological mother was murdered by my biological father. When I was a teenager, I dove deep into a seemingly endless search that spanned a decade, searching for answers. As an adult, my biological Aunt found me and confirmed that my mother had been a victim of the Calaveras County, California Charles Ng and Leonard Lake serial killings, in 1985. After reaching out to the since retired detective on her case, he sent me an eleven-page letter written by my mom that had somehow been gleaned from a sea of evidence left at the crime scene. It answered almost every question that I had. After learning everything through her letter, my biological father, and my adoption files, I finally concluded that she never had a voice or a chance in life. My attempt to become her voice gave way to a passion to tell a whole new story. A story once about my search for answers as an adoptee, had been transformed to the harrowing story of a victim; "A Letter from Sheri". The details accounted in the letter, tell the story of a life of trauma that started at an early age, and culminates with Sheri's life in the hands of ruthless serial killers when she took her last breath.

This book examines the unique form of democracy that has been taking shape in California since the historic recall of Gray Davis and the election of Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2003. The authors examine how Governor Schwarzenegger's leadership has encouraged the growth of direct democracy, in which public policy decisions are made by voters at the ballot box rather than by elected representatives in the legislature. Using the Public Policy Institute of California Statewide Surveys, which include interviews with more than 150,000 Californians, Baldassare and Katz detail the transformation in the state's political climate and the public attitudes behind this change. The Black people of Marks, Mississippi, and other rural southern towns were the backbone of the civil rights movement, yet their stories have too rarely been celebrated and are, for the most part, forgotten. Part memoir, part oral history, and part historical study, A Day I Ain’t Never Seen Before tells the story of the struggle for equality and dignity through the words of these largely unknown men and women and the civil rights workers who joined them.
