The bible tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen. However, as believers when faced with adverse circumstances, we waiver in faith during the waiting period and although we wont readily admit it, we doubt Gods ability to step in and change what seems impossible to possible. Scripture reminds us that God is the ultimate supreme ruler. We have evidence, scriptural, personal and otherwise where indeed He has made a way where there previously seemed to be only obstacles, barriers and mountains. But yet when going through periods of adversity, testing or challenge, we forget. We cave in under the pressures and like Peter we begin to sink. Peter defied laws of gravity and successfully walked on water for the time when his eyes were completed fixed on Jesus. The moment he looked down at the reality of his circumstances, he began to experience natural (rather than spiritual) results and sank. This book is a reminder that in spite of what we are going through our eyes are to remain fixed on our God. There are real people who have been healed of all types of terminal diseases. There are marriages that were considered irreparable which have been restored, women who were diagnosed as being barren have gone on to bear healthy children and there are children who were labeled as educable mentally retarded who have grown up to achieve and succeed academically and otherwise. Does your situation seem hopeless? Are you about to give up on your children, marriage or search for a job? Who has the final say? Is it man, is it your circumstance or is it God? Man may make a negative proclamation, diagnosis or declaration, but God is able to deliver positive, favorable and rewarding results.

Using insights about ancient and modern tragedy, this study offers challenging and provocative new readings of selected Biblical narratives: the story of Israel's first king, Saul, rejected for his disobedience to God and driven to madness; the story of Jephthah's sacrifice of his daughter in fulfillment of his vow to offer God a sacrifice in return for military victory; and the story of Israel's most famous king, David, whose tragedy lies in the burden of divine judgement that falls on his house as a consequence of his sins. The book discusses how these narratives handle such perennial tragic issues as guilt, suffering and evil.

Recent years have witnessed an upsurge of interest in relating the Bible to the worlds of literature and the visual arts. How is the Bible portrayed in the arts and how do the arts affect what we know, or think we know, about the Bible? In this provocative and wide-ranging collection, the eight contributors engage in a lively and fruitful conversation with the work of novelists, artists, filmmakers, and critics. Topics treated in this collection include the Bible and film, from Frank Capra movies of the 30s and 40s to such Hollywood epics as The Robe and The Ten Commandments; the Bible and literature, focusing particularly on the story of David and Bathsheba in recent fiction; and the Bible and painting, with specific studies of Rembrandt as painter and etcher and the twentieth-century German artist Lovis Corinth and more generalized discussion of paintings of King David throughout the centuries and the representation of the sexuality of Jesus in Renaissance art. Contributors include Joel Rosenberg, Erica Sheen, Martin O'Kane, Ilse Müllner, Johannes Taschner, Clive Marsh, J. Cheryl Exum, and David Jasper.

Cheryl Anderson examines the laws relating to women that are found in the Book of the Covenant and the Deuteronomic law. She argues that the laws can be divided into those that treat women similarly to men (defined as 'inclusive' laws) and those that treat women differently ('exclusive' laws). She then suggests that the exclusive laws, which construct gender as male dominance/female subordination, do not just describe violence against women but are inherently violent toward women. As a non-historical critique of ideology, critical theory is used to offer analytical insights that have significant implications for understanding gender constructions in both ancient and contemporary settings.
In essence, the most important word one will ever understand is truth, but within those five letters is a timeless mystery that has confounded philosophers, theologians, and sages throughout the centuries. What is truth? Who defines it? Who protects it? What the Nazis did to in the last century cannot be changed, and day by day, new information challenges the worlds definition of truth in times of war. In 1943, when the Nazis came to take the Jews to camps during the siege of Slovakia, a man by the name of Joseph Frier arranged to have his four sons taken to a place of safety. There, the boys hid in fear for their very lives and were forced to make impossible decisions just to survive. Martin, the authors husband, was one of those boys. Against the overwhelming scale of human cruelty of those days, it is important to remember and celebrate smaller human stories of kindness, courage, and integrity. During the Nazi occupation of Europe, fearful and weak men and women traded their souls to the devil. In this pitch-black part of world history, there were men and women who became champions of the truth and became heroes in the eyes of G-d forever. In remembering those who perished during this war, we pray for their souls as we remember our forefathers, Abraham, Issac, and Jacob, and our women patriarchs Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah. Throughout human history, countless faceless champions emerged when needed. Sadly, for every hero, there were also those who succumbed to their baser, more cowardly impulses of self-preservation at any cost. Echoes Resounding from the Past celebrates the truth of what it means to be a hero.

For Women Who Want More Than Comparing, Competing, and Coveting All of creation is content to be what it was made to be except us. Fish flourish in water. Ants are not worried about their size. But we waste time on the three C's--comparing, competing, coveting. We aim at the bull's-eye on someone else's board, pursuing a race we weren't equipped to run. Cheryl Martin shows women how to develop their God-given uniqueness rather than becoming fixated on what they are not or do not have. Distinctly You unveils the actions and attitudes that may be sabotaging women and explores ways women can engage and build up their unique talents, interests, and strengths. Readers will be inspired by examples in the Old and New Testaments of people who were exceptional for God's kingdom. As the author shares her ongoing quest to be distinct for his glory, readers see how God created them to thrive. Includes end-of-chapter questions for individual or group use.
Cheryl R. Jorgensen-Earp provides a new understanding of the recurrent rhetorical need to employ conservative rhetoric in support of a radical cause. Her study challenges the common view that the suffragettes' use of military metaphors, their vilification of the government, and their violent attacks on property were signs of hysteria and self-destruction. Instead, what emerges is a picture of a deliberate, if controversial, strategy of violence supported by a rhetorical defense of unusual power and consistency.

Do you wonder where God is in Alzheimer's? Are you searching for hope in caregiving? I searched too--I lost both of my parents to Alzheimer's. They were its innocent victims. Caregiving for someone with Alzheimer's can be painfully brutal. We know how it ends. There is no cure. It doesn't get better. But I learned that we don't have to be defeated by it. And there is much grace and collateral beauty to be found in the journey. From broken memories to broken bones, Alzheimers catalyzed terror and defeat in my family. My parents were terrorized by the scrambling of their minds. We who loved them had to suffocate our feelings of defeat as they returned to innocence. As a caregiver, God allowed me to share in my parents passages back to undefeated innocence. I gained loving moments that I would have missed if I hadnt been involved and if I hadnt taken up the proper vantage point to see them. Undefeated Innocence offers hope to caregivers by weaving poignant personal experiences, humor, and biblical stories with a study of the Beatitudes. It answers Where is God? in Alzheimers. It confirms that caregiving experiences are abnormally normal, and its okay to store toothpaste in an underwear drawer. Undefeated Innocence reveals Gods grace through the storms and affirms that caregivers are not alone in wondering if life can return to a place of peace.
