This book addresses several knowledge discovery problems on multi-sourced data where the theories, techniques, and methods in data cleaning, data mining, and natural language processing are synthetically used. This book mainly focuses on three data models: the multi-sourced isomorphic data, the multi-sourced heterogeneous data, and the text data. On the basis of three data models, this book studies the knowledge discovery problems including truth discovery and fact discovery on multi-sourced data from four important properties: relevance, inconsistency, sparseness, and heterogeneity, which is useful for specialists as well as graduate students. Data, even describing the same object or event, can come from a variety of sources such as crowd workers and social media users. However, noisy pieces of data or information are unavoidable. Facing the daunting scale of data, it is unrealistic to expect humans to “label” or tell which data source is more reliable. Hence, it is crucial to identify trustworthy information from multiple noisy information sources, referring to the task of knowledge discovery. At present, the knowledge discovery research for multi-sourced data mainly faces two challenges. On the structural level, it is essential to consider the different characteristics of data composition and application scenarios and define the knowledge discovery problem on different occasions. On the algorithm level, the knowledge discovery task needs to consider different levels of information conflicts and design efficient algorithms to mine more valuable information using multiple clues. Existing knowledge discovery methods have defects on both the structural level and the algorithm level, making the knowledge discovery problem far from totally solved.

Large-scale, highly interconnected networks, which are often modeled as graphs, pervade both our society and the natural world around us. Uncertainty, on the other hand, is inherent in the underlying data due to a variety of reasons, such as noisy measurements, lack of precise information needs, inference and prediction models, or explicit manipulation, e.g., for privacy purposes. Therefore, uncertain, or probabilistic, graphs are increasingly used to represent noisy linked data in many emerging application scenarios, and they have recently become a hot topic in the database and data mining communities. Many classical algorithms such as reachability and shortest path queries become #P-complete and, thus, more expensive over uncertain graphs. Moreover, various complex queries and analytics are also emerging over uncertain networks, such as pattern matching, information diffusion, and influence maximization queries. In this book, we discuss the sources of uncertain graphs and their applications, uncertainty modeling, as well as the complexities and algorithmic advances on uncertain graphs processing in the context of both classical and emerging graph queries and analytics. We emphasize the current challenges and highlight some future research directions.
January 19, 2020, cloudy, a mild Sunday in California, USA.Along Moro Beach of Crystal Cove State Park, which lies in a coastal city Newport Beach, artist Mr. Yemen Chen took a walk for the first time. Then, he caught the sight of a wonderful hill, parts of which extend to the Pacific Ocean. It looks awesome and glamourous and has been shown up in many well-known paintings. On this hill, he discovered a group of naturally formed "sculptures", which look like a row of friars marching in the air. Mr. Chen couldn't find the name of the hill on the map. Then he named it "Friar Hill".Without a camera at hand, Mr. Chen had to take the photo of Friar Hill with his mobile phone (see Picture 1). That was a rare overcast day in California, where the friar figures on the cliff were highly visible.On February 16, 2020, Mr. Chen came here for the second time, taking his camera purposely. The sun was strong that day. It seemed that the earth has soul, spiritually resisted the direct light. The earthly bodies of those friars seemed to disappear under direct rays. Only an ordinary hill exists (see picture 2). Once the strong light moved away, those figures appeared vividly, marching solemnly above our head.In order to take an ideal picture, Mr. Chen was waiting there for a long time. Seemed to understand his sincerity, a shaded zone on the hill appeared with a sudden short period during a sunny time. The friars showed up. Fortunately, Mr. Chen took some more satisfactory pictures successfully at last.Therefore, the ideal weather to appreciate those holy friar images is cloudy. But if you are eager to watch, you can go there as well on any sunny day. After all, in California, it is very difficult to wait for a cloudy day. As long as you wait sincerely, at a certain moment, the sudden shadow will cover the most miracle part of the hill, and the magic holy scenery will show up in front of you.Mr. Yemen Chen titled the statues of the friars on the Friar Hill as "sculptures made by God".Mr. Chen created Oyoism Art and composed lots of oyoional artworks such as The Creation, The Sky Is Not the Limit, Hedgehog and Deer, etc. He finds that in the world many well-known images bury some special information. In his idea, he thinks there is no accidental in the world just as God made it. All the secrets of the world have always been in front of us.
