CHEN PAN-LING'S ORIGINAL TAI CHI CHUAN TEXTBOOK (TAI CHI CHUAN CHIAO TSAI), translation of the Chinese text published in 1963, emerged when Chen chaired a committee of renowned martial artists of the 1940s. The resultant form, supported by scientific theory, incorporates the best from many styles popular at that time. Over 300 photos & illustrations act as a foundation for today's family styles. Tai chi chuan's mission is mental & physical well-being through self-defense. Scientific research supports tai chi's effectiveness in improving balance. Falls can mean decreased mobility, increased expenses, even nursing homes. This dilemma means more taxes for all, & poor quality of life for senior baby boomers. Teaching tai chi chuan to people of all ages is the express purpose of the original text, & the present translation. Y.W. Chang, Chen's senior student, collaborates with Ann Carruthers, a qualified curriculum developer & educator. This text has the elements of other tai chi chuan books, but with more structure for teaching & learning. Commentary, glossary, & other teaching aids make it an ideal supplement for university & hospital settings, along with the traditional martial arts studio. Blitz! The first English-language anthology of its kind, Red Is Not the Only Color offers a window into the uncharted terrain of intimate relations between Chinese women. As urban China has undergone rapid transformation, same-sex relations have emerged as a significant, if previously neglected, touchstone for the exploration of the meaning of social change. The short fiction in this volume highlights tensions between tradition and modernization, family and state, art and commerce, love and sex. These stories introduce an emerging generation of acclaimed, and at times controversial, women writers, including Chen Ran, Bikwan Wong, and Chen Xue. By presenting fiction from the PRC, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, the collection deliberately maps the literary contours of same-sex intimacy in broadly cultural rather than purely political terms. The perceptive and informative introduction surveys the social evolution of female same-sex intimacy in twentieth-century China, examines how each author engages with her Chinese context, and discusses how the stories compare with earlier representations of Chinese same-sex intimacy in the United States. Compelling for its literary quality, the anthology will also spur reflection among scholars of modern Chinese literature as well as readers interested in questions of gender, sexuality, and cross-cultural representation.
Born in Vancouver in 1920 to immigrant parents, Lin became a passionate advocate for China while attending university in the United States. With the establishment of the People's Republic, and growing Cold War sentiment, Lin abandoned his doctoral studies, moving to China with his wife and two young sons. He spent the next fifteen years participating in the country's revolutionary transformation. In 1964, concerned by the political climate under Mao and determined to bridge the growing divide between China and the West, Lin returned to Canada with his family and was appointed head of McGill University's Centre for East Asian Studies. Throughout his distinguished career, Lin was sought after as an authority on China. His commitment to building bridges between China and the West contributed to the establishment of diplomatic relations between Canada and China in 1970, to US President Richard Nixon's visit to China in 1972, and to the creation of numerous cultural, academic, and trade exchanges. In the Eye of the China Storm is the story of Paul Lin's life and of his efforts - as a scholar, teacher, business consultant, and community leader - to overcome the mutual suspicion that distanced China from the West. A proud patriot, he was devastated by the Chinese government's violent suppression of student protestors at Tiananmen Square in June 1989, but never lost faith in the Chinese people, nor hope for China's bright future.

The era of globalization saw China emerge as the world's manufacturing titan. However, the "made in China" model—with its reliance on cheap labor and thin profits—has begun to wane. Beginning in the 2000s, the Chinese state shifted from attracting foreign investment to promoting the technological competitiveness of domestic firms. This shift caused tensions between winners and losers, leading local bureaucrats to compete for resources in government budget, funding, and tax breaks. While bureaucrats successfully built coalitions to motivate businesses to upgrade in some cities, in others, vested interests within the government deprived businesses of developmental resources and left them in a desperate race to the bottom. In Manipulating Globalization, Ling Chen argues that the roots of coalitional variation lie in the type of foreign firms with which local governments forged alliances. Cities that initially attracted large global firms with a significant share of exports were more likely to experience manipulation from vested interests down the road compared to those that attracted smaller foreign firms. The book develops the argument with in-depth interviews and tests it with quantitative data across hundreds of Chinese cities and thousands of firms. Chen advances a new theory of economic policies in authoritarian regimes and informs debates about the nature of Chinese capitalism. Her findings shed light on state-led development and coalition formation in other emerging economies that comprise the new "globalized" generation.
Unlike other economies, family businesses in China are greatly affected by the derived Confucian culture, excessive marketization, as well as the seemingly endless institutional supervision by a transitional Chinese government. China has a strong historical legacy, devoted to patriarchal values and strong family-centered traditions. This volume explores the social foundations and historical legacies of families, business families, and family businesses in China. It begins with an overview of a household, family, and clan in ancient China before an examination of the economic, social, and cultural functions that the family system served in Ancient China as well as the four unique features that distinguish the family system in ancient China from those in western societies. It later discusses the evolution of the family system and the rise of family business before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Finally, it evaluates the family system before and after the “Open-up and Reform” in 1978. This interdisciplinary work, incorporating sociological, anthropological, and institutional contexts pertaining to China, offers researchers the first advanced perspective of the development of family firms in China.
AI Computing Systems: An Application Driven Perspective adopts the principle of "application-driven, full-stack penetration" and uses the specific intelligent application of "image style migration" to provide students with a sound starting place to learn. This approach enables readers to obtain a full view of the AI computing system. A complete intelligent computing system involves many aspects such as processing chip, system structure, programming environment, software, etc., making it a difficult topic to master in a short time. Provides an in-depth analysis of the underlying principles behind the use of knowledge in intelligent computing systems Centers around application-driven and full-stack penetration, focusing on the knowledge required to complete this application at all levels of the software and hardware technology stack Supporting experimental tutorials covering key knowledge points in each chapter provide practical guidance and formalization tools for developing a simple AI computing system
How did ancestral arthropods successfully diversify to colonize the land? How do insects use their wings to exploit terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems by metamorphosis? The causes and consequences of metamorphosis are still poorly understood in biology. This collection of essays examines the molecular basis underlying the metamorphosis regulation of the white wax scale insect (WWS), a fascinating insect that undergoes different metamorphoses between males and females. It shows that the WWS has produced great economic or medical benefits for human beings for thousands of years. This book provides interesting information for scientific and technical personnel, as well as undergraduate and graduate students engaged in entomology, molecular biology and biogeography.
The authors' innovative research ideas in power plant control are presented in this book. This book focuses on 1) cognition and reconstruction of the temperature field; 2) intelligent setting and learning of power plants; 3) energy efficiency optimization and intelligent control for power plants, and so on, using historical power plant operation data and creative methods such as reconstruction of the combustion field, deep reinforcement learning, and networked collaborative control. It could help researchers, industrial engineers, and graduate students in the areas of signal detection, image processing, and control engineering.
