Southern Mǐn refers to a group of Chinese dialects spoken mainly in Southeast China and Taiwan. This group occupies a special position in the study of Chinese dialects, not only because of its large population of speakers (around 48 million) but also because of its preservation of various archaic linguistic features long lost in other dialects. In this book, B.C. Kwok applies the comparative method on new fieldwork data to reconstruct the common sound system of ‘Proto-Southern Mǐn’, from which all modern Southern Mǐn varieties emerged. The syllable initials, finals and tonal categories of Proto-Southern Mǐn are illustrated by more than 500 examples. In addition, this book offers an alternative view on the subgrouping of 12 Southern Mǐn varieties. It proposes that the Quánzhōu dialect and the Zhāngzhōu dialect form the two main branches of the dialect group. Wide direct band gap gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor has received significant attention as an ideal material for various applications in the optoelectronic devices. One major use of GaN is the development of energy-efficient solid state light-emitting diodes. Currently, most commercially available GaN semiconductor are produced through advanced deposition techniques which involve sophisticated technologies and are relatively expensive and complicated to setup. As an alternative, the sol-gel spin coating method, which is relatively simpler, cheaper, safer, and more scalable was proposed. In this book, the process route and recipe for producing highly c-oriented crystalline GaN thin films via the sol-gel spin coating approach were described in detail. Some insights into the factors affecting the surface morphology as well as structural and optical properties of the deposited films were presented. Eventually, this book could inspire further studies into the development of low-cost GaN thin films.

Privacy preservation has become a major issue in many data analysis applications. When a data set is released to other parties for data analysis, privacy-preserving techniques are often required to reduce the possibility of identifying sensitive information about individuals. For example, in medical data, sensitive information can be the fact that a particular patient suffers from HIV. In spatial data, sensitive information can be a specific location of an individual. In web surfing data, the information that a user browses certain websites may be considered sensitive. Consider a dataset containing some sensitive information is to be released to the public. In order to protect sensitive information, the simplest solution is not to disclose the information. However, this would be an overkill since it will hinder the process of data analysis over the data from which we can find interesting patterns. Moreover, in some applications, the data must be disclosed under the government regulations. Alternatively, the data owner can first modify the data such that the modified data can guarantee privacy and, at the same time, the modified data retains sufficient utility and can be released to other parties safely. This process is usually called as privacy-preserving data publishing. In this monograph, we study how the data owner can modify the data and how the modified data can preserve privacy and protect sensitive information.
