For generations, the science fiction genre and literary fiction have been perceived as irreconcilable. Startling Sci-Fi: New Tales of the Beyond attempts to prove otherwise. These 13 stories are boldly literary while employing unmistakable characteristics of the sci-fi genre. Jhon Sanchez’s “The Japanese Rice Cooker” and Daniel Gooding’s “Crow Magnum Xix” toy with readers’ expectations by defying traditional storytelling techniques while Eve Fisher’s “Embraced” and David W. Landrum’s “The Priestesses of Light” are intricately constructed character studies. Rob Hartzell’s “The Dead and Eternal” raises profound concerns about modern technology though Adam Sass’s “98% Graves” takes an optimistic view of the future. Every story is accompanied by Stefanie Masciandaro’s vibrant, hypnotic illustrations which simultaneously evoke the days of sci-fi pulp paperbacks yet remain firmly grounded in 21st century digital techniques. This anthology will take you beyond what you thought possible in science fiction.

Through an unprecedented multidisciplinary and global approach, this book documents the dramatic several-thousand-year history of leprosy using bioarchaeological, clinical, and historical information from a wide variety of contexts, dispelling many long-standing myths about the disease. Drawing on her 30 years of research on the infection, Charlotte Roberts begins by outlining its bacterial causes, how it spreads, and how it affects the body. She then considers its diagnosis and treatment, both historically and in the present. She also looks at the methods and tools used by paleopathologists to identify signs of leprosy in skeletons. Examining evidence in human remains from many countries, particularly in Europe and including Britain, Hungary, and Sweden, Roberts demonstrates that those affected were usually buried in the same cemeteries as others in their communities, contrary to the popular belief that they were all ostracized or isolated from society into leprosy hospitals. Other myths addressed by Roberts include the assumptions that leprosy can’t be cured, that leprosy is no longer a problem today, and that what is called “leprosy” in the Bible is the same illness as the disease with that name now. Roberts concludes by projecting the future of leprosy, arguing that researchers need to study the disease through an ethically grounded evolutionary perspective. Importantly, she advises against use of the word “leper” to avoid perpetuating stigma today surrounding people with the infection and resulting disabilities. Leprosy will stand as the authoritative source on the subject for years to come. Ingrid Bergman was one of the biggest and most glamorous stars in Hollywood. She had starred in several now-classic films: Casablanca, Spellbound, Notorious, Gaslight; and her co-stars included such icons as Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant and Gregory Peck. Already a movie star in her native Sweden, Ingrid Bergman became an instant sensation in Hollywood and the number one box-office star in the world. But the most dramatic event in her life took place off the screen when she made a film in Italy and began a passionate affair with her director, Roberto Rossellini. The scandal that followed left her exiled from America, ostracized from Hollywood, vilified by the press and separated from her young daughter. In the words of those who were involved, Chandler describes Bergman's life before, during and after the scandal. Among those Chandler spoke with were Alfred Hitchcock, George Cukor, Cary Grant and Greta Garbo. She also spoke with Roberto Rossellini, their twin daughters, Isabella and Isotta Ingrid, Rossellini's son Renzo, Ingrid's daughter Pia Lindstrom and others who knew Ingrid well. This extraordinary access makes INGRID: A PERSONAL BIOGRAPHY the most perceptive and revealing book ever written about the charismatic Hollywood legend.

In this volume we share Charlotte Brontë's experience for four crucial years. The success of Jane Eyre and the strange power of Wuthering Heights made the 'brothers Bell' the 'universal theme of conversation'; but privately the family endured the deaths of Branwell Brontë in September and Emily in December 1848, followed by Anne's in May 1849. Haunted by the fear that she also would succumb, Charlotte found salvation in writing Shirley, published in October 1849, and comfort in her friendship and correspondence with Ellen Nussey, with her publishers-especially George Smith-with Mrs Gaskell, and (for a time) Harriet Martineau. She may also have received a proposal of marriage from Smith, Edler's manager, James Taylor.
