This book explores the impacts of HIV/AIDS and neoliberal globalization on the occupational health of public sector hospital nurses in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The story of South African public sector nurses provides multiple perspectives on the HIV/AIDS epidemic-for a workforce that played a role in the struggle against apartheid, women who deal with the burden of HIV/AIDS care at work and in the community, and a constituency of the new South African democracy that is working on the frontlines of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Through case studies of three provincial hospitals in KwaZulu-Natal, set against a historical backdrop, this book tells the story of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the post-apartheid period.
Ghana’s Foreign Policy: Kwame Nkrumah’s Normative Legacy and Pan-Africanism examines Ghana’s foreign policy in the post-independence era, focusing on the enduring legacy of Kwame Nkrumah. This book also analyzes the complexity of post-independence foreign policy decision making and the influence of the post-colonial narrative during the Cold War. In this study, Charles Asante argues that the significance and continuity of Nkrumah’s legacy is often attributed to his pan-Africanist leadership on the African continent, fervently articulating an independent African foreign policy. Leaders like Nkrumah, considered themselves as the redeemers of Africa’s political and economic vulnerability from its colonial experiences. Asante finds that, in contrast to the positive experience associated with his independence movement for Ghana, Nkrumah could not build the same kind of vision, engagement, and networks among other African nationalist leaders necessary for successful promotion of a Pan-African region. Despite Nkrumah’s own foreign policy failures in the Congo, the United States of Africa project, and his sudden overthrow in 1966, Nkrumah’s Pan-African vision is still promoted as an important foreign policy objective by Ghana’s politicians, public servants, military, and academics.
Bills of Rights and Decolonization analyzes the British Government's radical change in policy during the late 1950s on the use of bills of rights in colonial territories nearing independence. More broadly it explores the political dimensions of securing the protection of human rights at independence and the peaceful transfer of power through constitutional means. This book fills a major gap in the literature on British and Commonwealth law, history, and politics by documenting how bills of rights became commonplace in Britain's former overseas territories. It provides a detailed empirical account of the origins of the bills of rights in Britain's former colonial territories in Africa, the West Indies and South East Asia as well as in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It sheds light on the development of legal systems at the point of gaining independence and raises questions about the colonial influence on the British legal establishment's change in attitude towards bills of rights in the late twentieth century. It presents an alternative perspective on the end of Empire by focusing upon one aspect of constitutional decolonization and the importance of the local legal culture in determining each dependency's constitutional settlement and provides a series of empirical case studies on the incorporation of human rights instruments into domestic constitutions when negotiated between a state and its dependencies. More generally this book highlights Britain's human rights legacy to its former Empire, and traces the genesis of the bills of rights of over thirty nations from the Commonwealth.

This study is concerned with the ways in which a dozen " knowledge-based societies" of Western Europe and the English-speaking world respond to unprecedented cultural and linguistic diversity resulting from the flow of immigrants and refugees since World War II. It asks how public policy has sought to use schooling to minimize the potentially divisive and inequitable effects of this diversity and to provide opportunities to the children of immigrants. It asks also how the nature of each of these societies affects the meaning of integration into each of them.
In the mid-1800s, a group of High Anglicans formed the Universities' Mission to Central Africa (UMCA). Inspired by Dr. David Livingstone, they felt a special calling to bring the Church, education, and medical care to rural Africans. To deliver services across a huge, remote area, the UMCA relied on steamer ships that were sent from England and then reassembled on Lake Malawi. By the mid-1920s, the UMCA had built a chain of mission stations that spread across four hundred miles. In The Steamer Parish, Charles M. Good Jr. traces the Mission's history and its lasting impact on public health care in south-central Africa-and shows how steam and medicine, together with theology, allowed the Mission to impose its will, indelibly, on hundreds of thousands of people. What's more, many of the issues he discusses-rural development, the ecological history of disease, and competition between western and traditional medicine-are as relevant today as they were 100 years ago.
The purpose of my book, The Tip of the Arrow, A Study in Leadership, is to share with young people of today and tomorrow the story of young people like me at age sixteen as the blueprint of the Selma Student Nonviolent Civil Rights movement, a significant impacting factor in the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the dominating influence leading to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. On February 24, 2016, during a ceremony awarding the Congressional Gold Medal at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, I beamed with personal pride upon hearing Speaker Paul Ryan's statement that Congress decided to bestow the award to the foot soldiers because their contribution to our country was so great that they deserved the highest honor in our possession, the Congressional Gold Medal. The Tip of the Arrow is our story.
In this book Charles Mwalimu explores viable grassroots representation mechanisms in African constitutions in order to positively integrate indigenous and modern systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. A comparative study method is used to examine the constitutional principles of chieftaincy and local government and their impact on human rights. To establish and prove lack of positive integration Mwalimu connects this failure to poor constitutionalism, development and stultified growth and human rights violations.
