This volume examines various manifestations and understandings of the concept of monstrosity in medieval Europe around 500-1500 ce through a collection of contextual chapters and primary sources. The main chapters focus on a specific theme, a type of monster or representation of monstrosity, and consist of a contextual essay synthesizing recent scholarship on that theme, excerpts from primary sources and a bibliography of additional primary and secondary sources on the topics addressed in the chapter. In addition to building upon the wealth of scholarship on monsters and monstrosity produced in recent decades, the book engages with the current fascination with monsters in popular culture, especially in movies, television, and video games. The book presents a survey of medieval monstrosity for a non-specialist audience and provides a theoretical framework for interpreting the monstrous. This book is ideal for undergraduate students working on the theme of monstrosity, as well as being useful for undergraduate courses that cover the supernatural and manifestations of the monstrous covered in the book. With materials drawn from a wide range of medieval sources, it will also appeal to courses in English, French, Art History, and Medieval Studies.
Writing History for the King is at once a reassessment of the reign of Henry II of England (1133–1189) and an original contribution to our understanding of the rise of vernacular historiography in the high Middle Ages. Charity Urbanski focuses on two dynastic histories commissioned by Henry: Wace's Roman de Rou (c. 1160–1174) and Benoît de Sainte-Maure’s Chronique des ducs de Normandie (c. 1174–1189). In both cases, Henry adopted the new genre of vernacular historical writing in Old French verse in an effort to disseminate a royalist version of the past that would help secure a grip on power for himself and his children. Wace was the first to be commissioned, but in 1174 the king abruptly fired him, turning the task over to Benoît de Sainte-Maure. Urbanski examines these histories as part of a single enterprise intended to cement the king’s authority by enhancing the prestige of Henry II’s dynasty. In a close reading of Wace’s Rou, she shows that it presented a less than flattering picture of Henry’s predecessors, in effect challenging his policies and casting a shadow over the legitimacy of his rule. Benoît de Sainte-Maure’s Chronique, in contrast, mounted a staunchly royalist defense of Anglo-Norman kingship. Urbanski reads both works in the context of Henry’s reign, arguing that as part of his drive to curb baronial power he sought a history that would memorialize his dynasty and solidify its claim to England and Normandy.

Bond’s and Ford’s Almshouses are as recognisable to citizens and visitors to Coventry in the 21st Century as they would have been when first founded, 500 years ago. The Almshouses were founded in Coventry in the early 1500s by Thomas Bond and William Ford. The title of this book, “For so long as the world shall endure”, is a quotation from Thomas Bond’s will stipulating his bequest was to last for all of time. Bond’s and Ford’s have witnessed centuries of change around them and have themselves developed in many ways, but half a millennium after their founding both Almshouses do indeed continue to serve their original purpose, in their original buildings, on the same sites, and still financed and managed in largely the same way. A history spanning 500 years has an inherent depth and detail but what is also notable about Bond’s and Ford’s is the breadth of topics touched upon in their history. Matters referred to include the development of almshouses more generally, the relief of poverty, charitable foundations, religious belief, local politics, agriculture, estate management and a lot more besides. The history of Bond’s and Ford’s is fascinating in itself but also illuminates a variety of aspects of British social history and will appeal to many different readers
