In their native home, the MacKenzies were a proud clan with a proud name. In Ireland, that name would become anathema if they carried it forth, and so it became Kimsey. That name didn't hide them either from an English prisoner ship and a fate worse than death: sold as indentured servants in Lord Baltimore's colony. The little family was taken to their knees. With the good fortune of a fellow Scot as their master who became a good friend and set them on their feet again, the Kimseys found a fertile land and a fresh start. While other challenges would test them, including a war with their old enemies, they started a new clan, the head of which would become well-known, and the many generations would claim descent from Benjamin, their common ancestor.

For over three years, these captives had to confront challenges of incarcerationloss of freedom, constant fear of death, deprivation and starvation. Using ingenuity, indomitable spirit and trust in God, many survived until the heroic United States First Calvary rescued them. Ironically, danger persisted, for once the Japanese had abandoned the camp, they bombarded it. Robbed of her coming of age years, Lillian made the most of her newly acquired freedom when she arrived in the vibrant, free-spirited city of San Francisco. The book presents a discussion about the process of artistic creation in the diversity of its manifestations: visual arts, literature, theater, cinema, etc. The proposed reflections are supported by research dedicated to the study of these creative paths, from the documents left by the artists, such as diaries, notes, sketches, drafts, mock-ups, projects, scripts and contacts. Dialogues were established between the observation of recurrent aspects in a great diversity of processes and the thought of Charles S. Peirce, generating a possible theory of creation. First, the Unfinished Gesture discusses the aesthetics of the creative movement from a semiotic perspective. In this theoretical context creation is described as a fallible process with tendencies, supported by the logic of uncertainty, encompassing the intervention of chance and opening space for the introduction of new ideas. A continuous course in which you can not determine either a starting point or an end point.. These uncertain and indeterminate tendencies direct the artist in his search for the construction of works that satisfy his great poetic project, which is also strongly influenced by communicative issues. The search of the artist finds its possible concreteness, in complex processes of constructions of works. In a second moment, the creative path is focused from five points of view, as: transforming action, translation movement, knowledge process, construction of artistic truths and experimentation course. In the Epilogue are presented the concepts of Peircean semiotics, which base the reflections on the artistic creation developed throughout the book. The Unfinished Gesture aims to offer a critical approach to the arts, from the point of view of its production processes.

Indian agriculture has witnessed spectacular advances in agricultural production in the last few decades. This was possible through green revolution in mid 60s leading to the country’s remarkable achievement in food grains and edible oil production. Seed has always been regarded as the most vital, basic and critical input in agriculture. It is interesting to note that today seed demand of only 10% farmers is met. Efforts are needed to provide good quality certify seeds to farmers. In recent years the awareness for seed health has increased among the growers, traders, and consumers. In post-GATT era and with emergence of WTO, seed health has assumed the global concern. Infection of seed borne pathogens results into seed rots, seedling decay, pre and post emergence mortality, distortion, discoloration, reduced seed size and shrivelledness of seeds. Their study and identification is primarily required to achieve satisfactory control. The book will be of great help to students, researchers, and people engaged in seed production activities. In this book, information about different seed borne diseases is presented in 20 chapters. There is an urgent need to find out effective, alternative methods of diseases control, which are less harmful to human beings and environment. There are chapters dealing with botanical pesticides and quarantine regulations. A chapter describes molecular aspects involved in seed borne diseases. The contents are divided into two parts (I) Seed borne diseases and (II) Wilt and foliar diseases and their control methods. Ecofriendly measures to control seed borne diseases are dealt in detail. The book provides comprehensive and integrated information on management of seed health written by experts in the field. It will be especially useful for students and young people involved in seed testing, seed industry as well as in teaching. This book reports on a set of advances relating to nonlinear observer design, with a special emphasis on high-gain observers. First, it covers the design of filters and their addition to the observer for reducing noise, a topic that has been so far neglected in the literature. Further, it describes the adaptive re-design of nonlinear observers to reduce the effect of parametric uncertainty. It discusses several limitations of classical methods, presenting a set of successfull solutions, which are mathematically formalised through Lyapunov stability analysis, and in turn validated via numerical simulations. In the second part of the book, two applications of the adaptive nonlinear observers are described, such in the estimation of the liquid water in a hydrogen fuel cell and in the solution of a common cybersecurity problem, i.e. false data injection attacks in DC microgrids. All in all, this book offers a comprehensive report on the state-of-the-art in nonlinear observer design for energy systems, including mathematical demonstrations, and numerical and and experimental validations.

This book explores the premise that organizations are significantly influenced by their inter-organizational relationships; moreover, these relationships may generate important externalities, both positive and negative, impacting the environment at several levels. The advent of the Internet era, on the other hand, has resulted in disruptive changes in traditional inter-organizational networks, and some completely new inter-organizational settings are now arising. In its first part the book reviews the most commonly cited theories explaining inter-organizational phenomena: transaction costs economics, agency theory, resource dependence theory, game theories, collaborative networks theory, institutional theories, organizational ecology, resource-based / relational-based view of the firm, and knowledge network / social network theories. In Part II it thoroughly reviews the literature on a number of key IT-enabled inter-organizational systems currently on the rise, such as virtual organizations, e-intermediators and e-marketplaces. Lastly, Part III presents the case of the Yoox Group, a leading firm offering e-commerce services for fashion and design products. A framework is proposed for systematically linking the different possible types of inter-organizational relationships to specific, suitable sets of theories. The range of possible inter-organizational relationships is described on the basis of three pairs of opposites: conformism-breach, exploitation-exploration, and cooperation-competition. This results in a model that makes it possible to combine different theories in order to study the effects of inter-organizational ambidexterity and dynamism on performance.
