In this deeply moving and wonderfully insightful novel, acclaimed author Cathy Lamb explores what can happen when one woman decides to reclaim her past-and her future-no matter where they lead. . . Madeline O'Shea tells people what to do with their lives. A renowned life coach, she inspires thousands of women through her thriving practice-exuding enviable confidence along with her stylish suits and sleek hair. But her confidence, just like her fashionable demeanor, is all a front. For decades, Madeline has lived in fear of her traumatic past becoming public. Now a reporter is reinvestigating the notorious crime that put Madeline's mother behind bars, threatening to destroy her elaborate façade. Only Madeline's sister, Annie, and their frail grandparents know about her childhood--but lately Madeline has reason to wonder if her grandparents also have a history they've been keeping from her. As the demons of the past swirl around her, a tough, handsome judge with a gentle heart is urging Madeline to have faith in him-and in herself. And as she allows her resistance to thaw, the pain she expects pales in comparison to the surprises headed straight to her door. With one bold, unprecedented move, Madeline O'Shea may just wake up out of the sadness and guilt that have kept her sleepwalking through life for so long-and discover that the worst thing that can happen is sometimes the very thing we desperately need. The First Day of the Rest of My Life is an eloquent and triumphant tale of a fierce act of love, a family's legacy, and one woman's awakening to her own power-with no secrets. . .. .

And I Prayed is a memoir spanning the years of 2013-2019, during which the author's spouse battled terminal kidney cancer. During the same time period, the author suffers a seizure from a brain tumor and has brain surgery, followed one month later by her spouse also needing brain surgery due to his cancer. It details their respective medical journey's leading up to her husband's death, the year of "firsts" for her and her children, and one year after his death, her own diagnosis of cancer. It details her walk-in faith with God and how her husband's cancer battle brought him to accept Jesus for himself. It was her husband's desire that she share his testimony to encourage others faced with a similar fate, but it showcases more than that. It highlights a husband and wife's dedication to each other, perseverance through difficult life trials, and a strengthening of faith that allowed her to survive, fulfill goals, and find love again.
Trauma, Psychopathology, and Violence: Causes, Causes, Consequences, or Correlates? critically examines correlates, consequences, and potential causal relationships involving trauma, psychopathology, and violence. The authors address methodological and theoretical challenges to understanding the interrelationships among trauma, psychopathology, and violence from the perspective of their own research fields. Chapters focus on different types of traumas, traumas occurring at different developmental stages and in different contexts, and the contributions of biological and genetic factors in understanding psychopathology and violence. Each of the chapters offers recommendations for needed research. The book is divided into six topical areas: (1) Setting the context; (2) Biological and genetic factors in understanding trauma, psychopathology and violence; (3) Trauma in childhood and risk of psychopathology and violence; (4) Culture and community context in understanding trauma, psychopathology, and violence; (5) Responses to disasters and terrorism; and (6) Trauma, psychopathology, and violence in the military. The third volume in the American Psychopathological Association series, Trauma, Psychopathology, and Violence is a much needed addition to the scholarship of the mental health consequences of violence and trauma.
Settled in 1829 by antislavery Quakers from the south, Fairmount benefited from the many travelers going between Fort Wayne and Indianapolis and became known as a station on the Underground Railroad. From these humble beginnings, a tight-knit community evolved that valued culture, especially education and literature. Decades later, newspaper stories marveled at the Quakers Fairmount Academy and the number of accomplished individuals affiliated with the area, including writers, scientists, and college presidents. Like several Indiana towns, in 1887 this small, primarily agricultural area participated in one of the most dramatic eras in state history: the natural gas boom. Renowned artist Olive Rush was born and raised in Fairmount. The ancestors of one pioneering Quaker family, the Winslows, raised film icon James Dean on their Fairmount farm. Garfield cartoonist Jim Davis lived near Fairmount and graduated from Fairmount High School. Their stories and those of their friends and neighbors are captured in these images that represent the best of Americas heartland.

Three weeks after Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a New York City police officer shot and killed a fifteen-year-old black youth, inciting the first of almost a decade of black and Latino riots throughout the United States. In October 2005, French police chased three black and Arab teenagers into an electrical substation outside Paris, culminating in the fatal electrocution of two of them. Fires blazed in Parisian suburbs and housing projects throughout France for three consecutive weeks. Cathy Lisa Schneider explores the political, legal, and economic conditions that led to violent confrontations in neighborhoods on opposite sides of the Atlantic half a century apart. Police Power and Race Riots traces the history of urban upheaval in New York and greater Paris, focusing on the interaction between police and minority youth. Schneider shows that riots erupted when elites activated racial boundaries, police engaged in racialized violence, and racial minorities lacked alternative avenues of redress. She also demonstrates how local activists who cut their teeth on the American race riots painstakingly constructed social movement organizations with standard nonviolent repertoires for dealing with police violence. These efforts, along with the opening of access to courts of law for ethnic and racial minorities, have made riots a far less common response to police violence in the United States today. Rich in historical and ethnographic detail, Police Power and Race Riots offers a compelling account of the processes that fan the flames of urban unrest and the dynamics that subsequently quell the fires.

Last year, more African Americans were reported with AIDS than any other racial or ethnic group. And while African Americans make up only 13 percent of the U.S. population, they account for more than 55 percent of all newly diagnosed HIV infections. These alarming developments have caused reactions ranging from profound grief to extreme anger in African-American communities, yet the organized political reaction has remained remarkably restrained. The Boundaries of Blackness is the first full-scale exploration of the social, political, and cultural impact of AIDS on the African-American community. Informed by interviews with activists, ministers, public officials, and people with AIDS, Cathy Cohen unflinchingly brings to light how the epidemic fractured, rather than united, the black community. She traces how the disease separated blacks along different fault lines and analyzes the ensuing struggles and debates. More broadly, Cohen analyzes how other cross-cutting issues—of class, gender, and sexuality—challenge accepted ideas of who belongs in the community. Such issues, she predicts, will increasingly occupy the political agendas of black organizations and institutions and can lead to either greater inclusiveness or further divisiveness. The Boundaries of Blackness, by examining the response of a changing community to an issue laced with stigma, has much to teach us about oppression, resistance, and marginalization. It also offers valuable insight into how the politics of the African-American community—and other marginal groups—will evolve in the twenty-first century.

The difference however is that Mary is the outsider as the majority of the world is deaf. Her parents Ellen and Ben feel completely overwhelmed and her siblings react with anger and confusion that their sister is different. Mary’s life is set in a history of her grandmother’s life lived with love, sorrow, and mystery. Their stories will ask you to think outside of all you know and to imagine life as you never thought it.

Winner of the 2014 Bony Blithe Mystery Award. Anna Nolan discovers her ex-husband, Jack, on a deserted country road one night ‒ dead, unfortunately. He could only have been in town to see Anna, unless Jack was looking for their son, Ben. At least, that’s how the tall, cool Brit leading the police investigation sees it. To divert suspicion away from her son and herself, Anna delves into Jack’s personal life, only to discover that the actor had been romancing three very different women on a nearby film set. With some rather unorthodox ideas on how to conduct a murder investigation, Anna sets about meeting her ex-husband’s lovers, with harrowing results! ". . . a true 'chiller thriller' that I couldn't put down!" - MysteryNet Review "I seldom give five stars for a book but in this case I don't have another possibility. It's an absolutely brilliant story." - Goodreads Review Tags: cozy mystery, romantic suspense, female amateur sleuth, small town, humor, pets
Grading systems often reward on-time task completion and penalize disorganization and bad behavior. Despite our best intentions, grades seem to reflect student compliance more than student learning and engagement. In the process, we inadvertently subvert the learning process. After careful research and years of experiences with grading as a teacher and a parent, Cathy Vatterott examines and debunks traditional practices and policies of grading in K–12 schools. She offers a new paradigm for standards-based grading that focuses on student mastery of content and gives concrete examples from elementary, middle, and high schools. Rethinking Grading will show all educators how standards-based grading can authentically reflect student progress and learning--and significantly improve both teaching and learning. Cathy Vatterott is an education professor and researcher at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, a former middle school teacher and principal, and a parent of a college graduate. She has learned from her workshops that “grading continues to be the most contentious part . . . conjuring up the most intense emotions and heated disagreements.” Vatterott is also the author of the book Rethinking Homework: Best Practices That Support Diverse Needs.
