Must reading for anyone feeling too busy or too stressed and seeking to simplify their life—to listen to the longings of their heart. Most of us living in this complex and time-pressured era have moments when we wish we were living simpler, more meaningful lives. Sometimes these wishes are fleeting desires, but for many today the search for a life of greater simplicity and meaning has developed into a deep longing. There are many routes to simplicity. This book focuses on and provides direction to the gimmick-free spiritual path followed by Quakers. For over three centuries Quakers have been living out of a spiritual center in a way of life they call "plain living." Their accumulated experiences and distilled wisdom have much to offer anyone seeking greater simplicity today. Plain Living is not about sacrifice. It's about choosing the life you really want, a form of inward simplicity that leads us to listen for the "still, small voice"of God. This book goes beyond the merely trendy to make the by now well-worn Quaker path to plain living accessible to everyone.

In Glory's Shadow explores the history of The Citadel, an institution set on preserving tradition in the face of profound change. Established as protection against slave insurrections feared by the white minority of Charleston, South Carolina, a generation later The Citadel was a school of privilege for young white men. Through two world wars it grew in size and reputation, proudly providing the United States with (male) military leaders, paying little heed to what was happening in the country around it. In 1993, when the school rescinded Shannon Faulkner's admission because of her gender, a landmark legal battle ensued. Faulkner won, and although she faced vicious harassment and left after a week, The Citadel was forced to reform: nearly 30 women have graduated since her brief time at The Citadel. In Glory's Shadow is an engrossing and illuminating look at this pivotal event in military history and the history of women.

Imagining Society, Second Edition is an introductory text that presents sociology as a distinctly human enterprise. In every chapter, as they are learning the discipline’s foundational concepts, readers are led on a journey, across time and space, to encounter some of sociology’s key "makers"—the creative individuals whose representations of the social world enable us to make sense of it and change it for the better. At each stop they will be immersed in the actions, ideas, and original thoughts of these diverse and seminal thinkers, whose empirical methods and theoretical insights have inspired other sociologists and form the building blocks of the discipline. Exercises in the text create opportunities for students to activate their own imaginations and to also see familiar contemporary culture and society—TV shows, popular music, advertising, organizations, thought-leaders and authority figures, fads and movements, etc.—through fresh eyes. Throughout her life, and always with the solace and illumination of God's Word, Catherine sought to meet head-on difficult questions on obedience, self-surrender, the Holy Spirit, illness, doubt, darkness, releasing God's answers in prayer, accepting God's 'wait' and facing death. Her deep probing and the answers she discovered are incorporated into her writing. This book is a unique collection of writings that even includes personal glimpses from her journals. This is inspirational writing at its best.
