This volume presents six lively conversations with Hans-Georg Gadamer (born 1900), one of the twentieth century's master philosophers. Looking back over his life and thought, Gadamer takes up key issues in his philosophy, addresses points of controversy, and replies to his critics, including those who accuse him of having been in complicity with the Nazis. A genial and direct conversationalist, Gadamer is here captured at his best and most accessible. The interviews took place between 1989 and 1996, and all but one appear in English for the first time in this volume. The first three conversations, conducted by Heidelberg philosopher Carsten Dutt, deal with hermeneutics, aesthetics, and practical philosophy and the question of ethics. In a fourth conversation, with University of Heidelberg classics professor Glenn W. Most, Gadamer argues for the vital importance of the Greeks for our contemporary thinking. This publication captures the consciousness-altering experience of Carsten Nicolai's formidable and expandable project unidisplay. An excursion into scientific discourse, technical experimentation, architecture, art, and sound, unidisplay forms a compelling fresco out of physical phenomena, perspectives, and human perception. It consists of a more than 50-meter-long screen on which oscillating visual patterns and large-scale graphic modules are projected. This screen is flanked by two mirrored walls that expand the projections infinitely. The resulting digital (dis)orientation, color effects, flickering, optical illusions, and reflections take our perception to its limits. This book gives readers the opportunity to disentangle the project's concentrated sensory flood layer by layer. In the process, they not only gain insight into Nicolai's impressive visual theories, but also into their own perceptions - and how they might lead them astray.
This book explores the “Golden Age” of Sephardic Jewry on the Iberian Peninsula and its perception in German Jewish culture during the era of emancipation. For Jews living in Germany, the history of Sephardic Jewry developed into a historical example with its distinctive valence and signature against the pressure to assimilate and the emergence of anti-Semitism in Germany. It provided, moreover, a forum to engage in internal dialogue amongst Jews and external dialogue with German majority society about challenging questions of religious, political, and national identity. In this respect, the perception of prominent Sephardic Jews as intercultural mediators was key to emphasizing the skills and values Jews had to offer to civilizations in the past. German Jews invoked this past significance in their case for a Jewish role in present and future societies, especially in Germany.
Born in 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, Carsten Nicolai has become one of the most famous margin walkers of Electronic Music and Art. In his career, he performed and created installations and had solo shows in some of the worlds most prestigious spaces, including the Guggenheim NYC, MOMA SF, MOMA Oxford, and NTT Tokyo. He also runs the exceptional label, Raster Noton, responsible for the acclaimed CD series "20 to 2000" that went on to win the Prix Ars Electronica 2000 of the globe's leading electronic art festival. Carsten Nicolai uses electronic sound and visual art as a kind of hybrid tool to create his very special microscopic view of creative processes. This book features texts on and by him, music, sounds and visual both in print and on the accompanying CD.
The Economics of Identity and Creativity aims to sythesize naturalistic evolutionary theory while discussing new developments in economics. The author's approach reexamines fundamental assumptions about how a capitalist economy works, from the relation between producers and consumers to the functioning of intellectual property rights. In the creative economy, the author argues, identities merge with the flow of creative action. To explain these changes, he draws upon a range of theories from analytical philosophy to biology, and from economics to sociology. The first part of the book examines the role of language in the naturalistic approach to cultural science. Hermann-Pillath draws on Darwinian evolutionary theory to map a concept of knowledge. Part Two offers a systematic approach to creativity and identity from the naturalistic point of view developed in Part One. Here the author builds a theory of creativity from the ideas of conceptual blending in the cognitive sciences. Herrmann-Pillath presents a theory of identity based on analytical philosophy, and looks at the problems in fixing the boundaries of an individual identity both in biological evolutionary theory and brain sciences. He takes the concept of identity through the current economic approaches, examining the distinction between social and personal identity. This fascinating interdisciplinary work provides a precise argument that the foundations of economics can be found in cultural science, and it has evolved to become the cultural institution at the core of the modern economy.
