What is a hotel? As Caroline Field Levander and Matthew Pratt Guterl show us in this thought-provoking book, even though hotels are everywhere around us, we rarely consider their essential role in our modern existence and how they help frame our sense of who and what we are. They are, in fact, as centrally important as other powerful places like prisons, hospitals, or universities. More than simply structures made of steel, concrete, and glass, hotels are social and political institutions that we invest with overlapping and contradictory meaning. These alluring places uniquely capture the realities of our world, where the lines between public and private, labor and leisure, fortune and failure, desire and despair are regularly blurred. First published in 1998, this volume seeks to examine a range of policing techniques which are new, if not in their conception, then at least in their importance to the form of police enquiries in the late 20th century. Some of them are beginning to be discussed under categories of 'proactive' or 'covert' policing: others are termed 'technological' because they depend intimately on the development of the new information technologies. In much of Western Europe and North America the nature of police investigative methods is being transformed. At the centre of these developments are three main trends. First, there is the increasing use of covert intelligence-gathering techniques such as participating informers, police undercover operations and surveillance proactively targeted at ‘suspicious’ individuals or networks. Secondly, there is the development of increasingly sophisticated information gathering and processing technologies (DNA) and fingerprint data bases, general intelligence storage systems, computer analysis of open source data, the Internet). Lastly there is an extending exploitation of powers to compel private individuals and companies to provide the state with information about themselves and third parties (including the use of information originally supplied to the state for purposes other than criminal investigation). This book argues that in different ways these trends represent a new invasion of the private sphere by investigative methods and a new challenge for traditional mechanisms for rendering the state’s policing accountable such as the trial, the judge and the defence lawyer. Bringing together contributions from sociologists and lawyers in Western Europe and North America, it surveys these developments, considers the regulatory options for their control and their implications for legal principles of privacy and due process.

Grahame Kings life as an artist began with his mastery of the new art of colour reproduction as a photolithographic colour etcher in Melbourne in the 1930s. At the same time, study at the National Gallery Art School with George Bell assisted his development as a painter. After war service and travels abroad, King returned to Melbourne with his wife, the sculptor Inge King. The two held a number of joint exhibitions of paintings and sculptures in Australia throughout the 1950s and then, from c.1962 Grahame King turned his attention, increasingly, towards the art of lithography becoming a master in this field of printmaking. He has also devoted himself to promoting the art of lithography and printmaking generally through the Print Council of Australia. He is often called Australias patron saint of printmaking. The book examines his seven decades working as an artist in Melbourne and is lavishly illustrated with colour reproductions throughout.

The transition from whole numbers to rational numbers and the associated mastery of the multiplicative conceptual field constitute an important development in lower secondary schooling. This study draws primarily on the theory of conceptual fields as a framework that is mathematical and enables a cognitive perspective by identifying the concepts- and theorems-in-action that lead to underlying concepts and theorems. Application of the Rasch model configures the location of both item difficulty and learner proficiency on one scale. Diagnostics explore the validity of the instrument for measurement. The ordering of items enables the analysis of hierarchical conceptual strands and additional insights into the mastery of concepts by subsets of learners at particular levels. The resulting matrix, of interactions of learner proficiency and item complexity, provides an overview of the concepts attained and not yet mastered. These insights permit teacher interventions specific to each learner subset at a shared common current zone of proximal development along the scale. Caroline Long has received her doctorate in Mathematics Education from the University of Cape Town in 2011 and is Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria, where she is responsible for teaching mathematics education courses, and modules on assessment. She is also Deputy Director at the Centre for Evaluation and Assessment. Her primary research foci are mathematics education, professional development, teacher agency and assessment. Current work relies on collaboration with researchers at other South African institutions, and in Australia, Canada, England, Germany, India, the Netherlands, Scotland and the USA.
