The new edition of Seeds contains new information on many topics discussed in the first edition, such as fruit/seed heteromorphism, breaking of physical dormancy and effects of inbreeding depression on germination. New topics have been added to each chapter, including dichotomous keys to types of seeds and kinds of dormancy; a hierarchical dormancy classification system; role of seed banks in restoration of plant communities; and seed germination in relation to parental effects, pollen competition, local adaption, climate change and karrikinolide in smoke from burning plants. The database for the world biogeography of seed dormancy has been expanded from 3,580 to about 13,600 species. New insights are presented on seed dormancy and germination ecology of species with specialized life cycles or habitat requirements such as orchids, parasitic, aquatics and halophytes. Dr. Thomas holds a PhD in literature and psychology from Union University and Institute, a doctorate in applied theology from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and a master of arts in creative writing and poetry from Stetson University in Florida in addition to a master of arts in psychology from Saint Leo University in Florida. She has taught literature, psychology, and womens studies at the University of Connecticut, Bowie State University, and Cameron University as well as a number of additional universities and colleges. She has also taught creative writing at Gavle University in Storvik, Sweden. During her sojourn of eleven years at the University of Connecticut, she taught psychology and creative writing and enjoyed private practice with Shoreline Psychiatric Associates. In addition, for three years she was also an adjunct professor at Niantic Prison for Women. Her classes resulted in a book of original art and poetry, which was eventually published by the State of Connecticut. Dr. Thomas and her recently retired husband, Dr. Frank Thomas, a surgeon, now reside in Ormond-by-the Sea, where they are inveterate beach walkers, writers, and proud parents of their newly acquired schnauzer, Rocky, who accompanies them on their frequent walks. Including a number of published chapbooks, this will be Dr. Thomass fifth book of poetry.

The Jefferson County communities of Worthington and Springdale are located on Brownsboro Road, 12 miles east of Louisville. The area's abundant water sources and fertile soil attracted the earliest settlers in the late 1700s, and farms, mills, and blacksmith shops sprang up along the streams. The Brownsboro Road (originally called Brownsboro Turnpike) served farmers selling their produce, as well as the wealthy "gentleman farmers" who built fine homes in the rural countryside. The fertile soil was particularly suited to growing potatoes, and the Worthington Potato Growers Cooperative handled thousands of barrels daily. The community came together to construct churches and a fine stone school building, establish a cemetery, and organize a fire department. The historic African American community of Taylortown survives in the Taylortown African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church, established in 1868. Today, suburban sprawl has erased all but a few vestiges of the once-thriving farming communities.
