The Jews are terror stricken as daily, new directives are issued, systematically stripping away their rights, then their property, and finally, they are herded into and sealed in the newly built ghetto. Anton and other young people attempt to obtain weapons and rally people to fight back but are met with resistance and disbelief. As the fearsome darkness continues to grow and people are starving and dying, they realize Hitlers plan to annihilate the biological foundation of Jewry. Finally, the Nazis announce a resettlement in the east. Each day, thousands are rounded up and taken by trains to a camp at Treblinka. It is soon discovered that those people are being gassed to death. The roundups halt, but the fighting movement prepare for the Nazis return, ready to fight back when they do. Knowing that in the end they cannot win, they are determined to resist and to live with honor and die with honor.

Thus, much work has been devoted to the understanding of the nitrogen chemistry in combustion and in the atmosphere. The production and detection methods as weiL as the reactions have been comprehensively described. ln addition detailed information is given on the spectral behavior, the knowledge of which is important for detecting the mole cules and for studying their kinetics.

To the surprise of his friends, in 1958 Richard Lis did just that, and then spent the next seventeen years of his life farming and living alone in a drafty shack by the lake. After his death, there is an estate auction sale held on the farm. Attending are three members of the Ziemba family, friends who over the years had worked for Lis in the summers. Scenes from the auction reoccur throughout the narrative. Little details—a whiff of cigarette smoke, an empty tractor seat, walnuts lying on the ground—trigger the adult daughter’s memories of working on the farm and the extended conversations between Lis and her mother during their social visits. In the interweaving of present and past, the author presents an exquisite and observant slice of life, capturing the complex and unforgettable character of the elderly farmer with all his friendliness, hospitality, generosity, but sensitivity to others, but also his sometimes inexplicable outbursts of anger and frustration. The stories within stories that make up this book are told in voices that are genuine and engaging. The setting of rural Niagara in the mid-twentieth century is reminiscent of a simpler era when farmers could make a living on small acreages and friends would visit and talk for hours. It was a time that was on the cusp of a changing world, a time that some will look back on with nostalgia, while others might wish could return.

This volume deals with binary nitrogen-hydrogen compounds having two, three, or more nitrogen atoms (with the exception of hydrazine) and with compounds composed of nitrogen, hydrogen, and noble gases. The important species containing two nitrogen atoms, N2H, N2H+, N2H2, and N2H3 are described in the first part of this volume. Next, chains and cycles consisting of three nitrogen atoms are covered. Among them hydrogen azide or hydrozoic acid, HN3, is the most extensively studied nitrogen-hydrogen compound described in this volume. With increasing number of nitrogen atoms, the thermochmical stability declines. There is, however, a considerable amount of information on molecules with up to nine linked nitrogen atoms. Several of these binary nitrogen-hydrogen compounds could only be isolated in the form of organic derivatives. In that case, data available for the organic derivatives were included if they were characteristic for the particular unsubstituted N-H parent compound.
