This practice-focused guide introduces The SmartStart Toolbox as a remedial program to help mental health professionals and adoptive parents promote the educational and social development of internationally adopted children aged 4–8. Recognizing the cultural, emotional, and cognitive needs of children who have experienced a fundamental change in their social situation of development following international adoption, The SmartStart Toolbox provides a range of family-based remedial activities which stimulate children’s thinking and learning while creating scaffolded attachment opportunities during early interactions with their adoptive families. The volume details the notions of "psychological tools" (Vygotsky) and "mediated learning experience" (Feuerstein) which form the theoretical foundations for The SmartStart Toolbox and offers step-by-step guidance on conducting activities and adapting them to the individual child. The SmartStart methodology can also be used by professionals for diagnostic purposes. This text will benefit researchers in child psychology, as well as clinicians, family therapists, social workers, and educators with an interest in child development, cognitive and language enhancement, and adoption and fostering more broadly. Adoptive parents will also benefit from this book and its focus on themes of attachment, parenting, and the development of social cognition.

For how thy memory has lingered on– In spite of cruelest winter’s drear and howl– By inner mirror seen; I’ve dwelled upon, I must confess, my treachery most foul. Did Shakespeare pen a series of passionate sonnets, unknown to modern scholarship, ardently praising a mysterious dark-haired beauty? This tantalizing question is raised in a letter to literature professor Rose Asher. But the letter’s author, Rose’s star pupil, is not telling. A troubled, enigmatic young man, he plunged to his death in front of the college’s entire faculty, an apparent suicide. Determined to find the truth, Rose journeys from New York to Italy, back to the magnificent Tuscan villa where as an undergraduate she first fell in love. La Civetta is a dreamlike place, resplendent with the heady scent of lemon trees and the sunset’s ocher wash across its bricks and cobbles. Once there Rose finds her first love still in residence. Torn between her mission and her rekindled feelings, Rose becomes enmeshed in a treacherous tangle of secrets and scandal. A folio containing what some believe to be one of Shakespeare’s lost sonnets has vanished, and literary immortality awaits whoever finds the manuscript–as do a vast Italian estate and a Hollywood movie deal. Uncertain whom she can trust and where she can turn, Rose races against time and unseen enemies in a bid to find the missing masterpiece. Lush, lyrical, and enthralling, The Sonnet Lover vividly brings to life the Tuscan countryside and the fascinating world of the Renaissance poets. Unmatched in her ability to evoke atmosphere and intrigue, Carol Goodman delivers her most ambitious and satisfying work to date, a seductive novel that skillfully propels its reader headlong to the final suspenseful page.
Colonialism and the Modernist Moment in the Early Novels of Jean Rhys explores the postcolonial significance of Rhys’s modernist period work, which depicts an urban scene more varied than that found in other canonical representations of the period. Arguing against the view that Rhys comes into her own as a colonial thinker only in the post-WWII period of her career, this study examines the austere insights gained by Rhys’s active cultivation of her fringe status vis-à-vis British social life and artistic circles, where her sharp study of the aporias of marginal lives and the violence of imperial ideology is distilled into an artistic statement positing the outcome of the imperial venture as a state of homelessness across the board, for colonized and ‘metropolitans’ alike. Bringing to view heretofore overlooked émigré populations, or their children, alongside locals, Rhys’s urbanites struggle to construct secure lives not simply as a consequence of commodification, alienation, or voluntary expatriation, but also as a consequence of marginalization and migration. This view of Rhys’s early work asserts its vital importance to postcolonial studies, an importance that has been overlooked owing to an over hasty critical consensus that only one of her early novels contains significant colonial content. Yet, as this study demonstrates, proper consideration of colonial elements long considered only incidental illuminates a colonial continuum in Rhys’s work from her earliest publications.

Joyce Carol Oates’s Wonderland Quartet comprises four remarkable novels that explore social class in America and the inner lives of young Americans. In Expensive People, Oates takes a provocative and suspenseful look at the roiling secrets of America’s affluent suburbs. Set in the late 1960s, this first-person confession is narrated by Richard Everett, a precocious and obese boy who sees himself as a minor character in the alarming drama unfolding around him. Fascinated by yet alienated from his attractive, self-absorbed parents and the privileged world they inhabit, Richard incisively analyzes his own mismanaged childhood, his pretentious private schooling, his “successful-executive” father, and his elusive mother. In an act of defiance and desperation, eleven-year-old Richard strikes out in a way that presages the violence of ever-younger Americans in the turbulent decades to come. A National Book Award finalist, Expensive People is a stunning combination of social satire and gothic horror. “You cannot put this novel away after you have opened it,” said The Detroit News. “This is that kind of book–hypnotic, fascinating, and electrifying.” Expensive People is the second novel in the Wonderland Quartet. The books that complete this acclaimed series, A Garden of Earthly Delights, them, and Wonderland, are also available from the Modern Library.

What is the most important attribute a freelance consultant must have? " Is it communications skills, a package of up-to-the- inute techniques, or the ability to project manage effectively? " All of these things are necessary. But I encourage you to read this book through a different lens. The most important attribute, in my world, is the ability to market oneself- products, pricing, promotion and routes to market. This book will support you on that journey." Martin Shervington, author
The Enhanced Edition includes 22 minutes of instructional video by the author in seven videos. The introduction video uses a card trick to show why some liars are harder to spot than others. Three videos explain the key points to know to avoid seeming deceptive when telling the truth, how biases and assumptions interfere with the ability to know who’s lying, and how managers can reduce lies in the workplace. Two videos show examples of nonverbal deception detection, and how to deal with liars in a job interview. One video shares what the author has learned since writing the book. Lies aren’t good in general, but in the workplace they’re especially poisonous. They can destroy employee engagement and productivity, undermine teamwork, increase stress, ruin people’s livelihoods, and even bring down entire companies. It’s critical to catch workplace lies before they snowball into something catastrophic, but most of us have no clue about how to spot a liar. And the workplace setting adds another layer of complexity. At what point do you report a liar? If you decide to take action, what exactly should you do? And what if the liar is your boss? In this entertaining and needed book, leading workplace body language expert Carol Kinsey Goman combines her own experiences with the latest research to provide a comprehensive guide to spotting, exposing, and minimizing workplace lies. Goman looks at the high cost of workplace deception for individuals and organizations, why people tell lies at work, and the kinds of lies they tell. She offers fifty ways that body language and vocal cues can help you spot a liar and explains how our own vanities, desires, self-deceptions, and rationalizations allow us to be duped. Once you spot a lie, she provides tactical advice on how to respond, whether the liar is above, below, or on the same level as you. And Goman explains how to make sure your own body language doesn’t inadvertently make you seem untrustworthy and what leaders at all levels can do to reduce lies and encourage candor. Some workplace lies are a polite and positive part of professional life (“I’d be delighted to come to that meeting”). But Goman focuses on truly destructive lies and shows how you can prevent them from wreaking havoc on individuals and organizations.

Determined Means: Going from Victim to Victor speaks about demeaning and abusive behaviors in all environments and in all walks of life as it relates to all types of abuse. This book addresses the habits and mindsets of the victim, as well as the characteristics and habits of the abuser. In outlining the process of healing, the mindset and determination of the victim to survive and be successful through practicing safe measures and God’s Word are emphasized along with what “in our nature” causes us to sin. This book instructs us as individuals how to endure trauma and embrace healing and safety measures. As with any victim, they realize it becomes increasingly more difficult to trust others and hold on to sanity during times of great suffering, pain and abuse. We begin to doubt our self worth, allow others to dictate everything to us, value other peoples’ opinion over our own. These are just a few of the issues we wrestle with daily in the complexity of abuse. I struggled with all of these issues most of my life. One human being should never have control over another, especially in unhealthy ways. This book distinguishes the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, habits and boundaries and why we need to put them into place. These are the most significant barriers to healthy relationships and without them often give the perpetrator “mixed signals”. We can do all we can and still experience tragedy. As you read this book and learn the “Psychology” of our existence and creation, you will understand the need for this “real life safety net” pertinent to your life as a whole.

Something strange and wonderful was happening to me in this place. I began to write with hunger and passion, I was like a mad woman. Every hour of my day, with all my sorrow and pinned-up pain, I wrote. I got down on my knees in the prison dorm, right in the midst of chaos. I prayed and I asked, the Lord if I wasn't asking to much, to make me his poet. I looked around to see if anyone could hear what I was saying in my prayer, even the Lord himself. I felt stupid and worthless, but I had to try and see if I could get his attention. To see if he really loved me and cared for me. The women encouraged me so much, they loved my writing and said they wanted to see a book. I received more respect in Niantic than I did on the street. I was told by several CO.'s that I was a model prisoner, and yes I took the compliments. Some of the women came to me for prayer and told me not to let go of God because he looks good on me. I served eight months for violation of probation, from June 1996 through Feb 1997.This was the longest stay and the last. Now15yrs later, here's the finished book. When you stick close to God he always performs his word. Every woman has a hidden treasure, and you never know, where you’ll discover it.

In this stunning work of historical fiction, the Booker Prize–nominated author of Jamrach’s Menagerie reimagines the incredible true story of Julia Pastrana, a woman branded a freak at birth. Although she was pronounced by the most eminent physician of the day to be “a true hybrid wherein the nature of woman presides over that of the brute,” Julia was fluent in English, French, and Spanish, and an accomplished musician with an exquisite singing voice. Alternately vilified and celebrated, all she wanted was for people to see beyond her hairy visage—and perhaps, the chance for love. When Julia meets a charming showman who catapults her onto the global stage, she believes that she has found true happiness at last. But the question of whether her lover truly cares for her—or if his management is just a new form of exploitation—lingers heavily. A deeply moving novel, in Orphans of the Carnival Carol Birch has crafted a haunting examination of how we define ourselves and, ultimately, of what it means to be human.
Legally-blind college reporter Mike Mavic hopes to get a story about a body found in Steepleton, believed to be that of long-missing teen Christopher Creed, but finds something odd about the town, including Justin Creed's obsessive drive to learn what really happened to his older brother. Sequel to "The body of Christopher Creed". Senior High. 2012.
