Set just before Christmas in 1908, this charming tale finds Henry Ford puzzling over a way to make his Model T affordable for the average family. His little son Edsel suggests that Daddy write to Santa for advice. Since Santa makes toys for millions of children, Edsel points out, he must know a better way. Henry writes the letter just to please his son, but Santa actually answers by taking Henry to visit his North Pole workshop. When he sees the elves working in a line, each completing just one specific task on every toy that's made, Henry Ford envisions an automobile assembly line. The story not only illustrates that children can teach adults how to dream, but it also provides an author's note with factual information about Henry Ford and the Model T.

But in truth these women—among them Dorothy Parker, Lena Horne, and Gypsy Rose Lee—were, by nature of their diversity and ambition, a threat to the traditional portrayal of the American family on the airwaves. This book from Goldsmiths Press describes what American radio and television lost when these women were blacklisted, documenting their aspirations and achievements. Through original archival research and access to FBI blacklist documents, The Broadcast 41 details the blacklisted women's attempts in the 1930s and 1940s to depict America as diverse, complicated, and inclusive. The book tells a story about what happens when non-male, non-white perspectives are excluded from media industries, and it imagines what the new medium of television might have looked like had dissenting viewpoints not been eliminated at such a formative moment. The all-white, male-dominated Leave it to Beaver America about which conservative politicians wax nostalgic existed largely because of the forcible silencing of these forty-one women and others like them. For anyone concerned with the ways in which our cultural narrative is constructed, this book offers an urgent reminder of the myths we perpetuate when a select few dominate the airwaves.

When Denmark introduced compulsory education in 1814, the city of Copenhagen responsed by regulating the already existing private school system. Roughly half of the school age population went to some kind of school and of those the overwelming majority attended private schools, most of which were run by women. The book tells the story of these women, their schools and pupils on the 150 private schools from 1790-1820. Carol Gold's contention is that these private schools and their teachers were much better than is presently assumed in Danish historiography. The teachers were all literate; they could read and most of them could write. The education provided for girls ranged from the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic plus needlework in the beginner schools, to the "scientific" subjects of history, geography, natural sciences and foreign languages in the more advanced academies. Furthermore, the schools formed the basis of the Copenhagen school system which was established at the beginning of the 19th century.

To practice psychotherapy in a correctional setting is to encounter a range of cultural issues reflecting the various ethnic, class, gender, and physical subgroups of the prison population--as well as to navigate the culture of the prison, staff, and justice system that underpins the patients' circumstances. Drawing on the authors' extensive professional experience, Psychotherapy in Corrections offers mental health professionals a comprehensive look at the most common situations they are likely to face and provides practical advice on dealing with them. Diagnostically oriented chapters cover core issues that include self-harm and substance use disorders, as well as mood and personality disorders. Specific supportive therapy techniques for addressing these issues, as well as special situations--including the experience of women in prison, behaviors that can disrupt care, and efforts to reduce recidivism--are illustrated by clinical vignettes. In tackling the social and developmental conditions that lead individuals to interact with the correctional system, Psychotherapy in Corrections also acknowledges the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the movement for social justice in society. Infancy and Culture: An International Review and Source Book provides a cross-indexed, annotated guide to social and behavioral studies of infants of color. Derived from five major data bases of published scientific literature, this volume was designed to elevate the scientific study of infants of color to a level reflecting their majority status in the world's population. While the vast majority of the world's infants are infants of color, a scan of 175 journals only resulted in 386 studies. This crisply underscores the need to intensify studies of cross-culture and within-culture variability, in order to broaden our understanding of the cultural impact on social and behavioral development during the first few years of human life. Infancy and Culture takes a small step in that direction by cataloging the extant literature by geographic region, and by cross-indexing it by topical content. Citations are numbered consecutively throughout the text and both author and subject indexes are pegged to the citation number, not to page numbers, thereby facilitating one's search for all published literature related to a particular topic. Finally, the editors provide a brief summary of the research for each chapter in the volume.

They loved and cared for one another through hardships and shared their strengths and hearts. Gene Sandusky-popular and admired by all. He was gentle and sensitive yet exceptionally charismatic. Gene was a football quarterback and magic on the basketball court. He was class president, graduation speaker, and recipient of scholarships and awards. To Carol, he was the kindest, most handsome man, but somewhat sad. Gene was highly respected, and he was the hero. Mike McVary-brilliant, athletic, and wealthy. He could have gone to the best college, but he chose to go to Vietnam instead. He was generous to a fault and helped veterans and his friends although there were some things his money couldn't buy. He was extremely protective, especially of Carol. Mike had an infectious, pleasant personality, and he was the protector. Carol Sullivan-kind, pretty, and smart. Alongside Mike, she was considered rebellious and denied honors and scholarships. She was a generous girl who gave of her heart. When her friends were ill or injured, she knew how to help and heal them. She carried many secrets locked within her heart. Carol was very strong, and she was the healer. John Kelley-abused as a child and handicapped, but he always smiled. His three friends tried to make his life easier. Even though growing up in extreme poverty, John had a sweet nature and loved everyone. No matter how many times he was knocked down, he always got up and tried again. John was a survivor, and he was the lover.
