This study of Bram Stoker focuses on Stoker as a Gothic writer. Identified with Dracula, Stoker is largely responsible for taking the Gothic away from medieval castles and placing it at the center of modern life. The study examines Stoker's contribution to the modern notion of Gothic and thus to the history of popular culture and demonstrates that the excess generally associated with the Gothic is Stoker's way of examining the social, economic, and political problems. His relevance today is his depiction of problems that continue to haunt us at the beginning of the twenty first century. What makes the current study unique is that it privileges Stoker's use of the Gothic but also addresses that Stoker wrote seventeen other books plus numerous articles and short stories. Since a number of these works are decidedly not Gothic, the study puts his Gothic novels and short stories into the perspective of everything that he wrote. The creator of Dracula also wrote The Duties of Clerks of Petty Sessions in Ireland, a standard reference work for clerks in the Irish civil service, as well as The Man and Lady Athlyne, two delightful romances. Furthermore, Stoker was fascinated with technological development and racial and gender development at the end of the century as well as in supernatural mystery. Indeed the study demonstrates that the tension between the things that can be explained rationally and the things that cannot is important to our understanding of Stoker as a Gothic writer.

Shakespeares -- and Guillims -- in Gloucestershire? That is the question. This search for Shakespeare connections with Gloucestershire grew out of the 1581 will of Alexander Houghton of Houghton Tower, Lancashire, that named two men, Fulke Guillim and William Shakeshafte, who were probably members of Houghton's private acting group. It seemed probable that identifying Fulke Guillim could help determine if William Shakeshafte was actually William Shakespeare, as proposed by E.A.J. Honigmann and many subsequent authors. Might Guillim be related to John Guillim, the herald, of Minsterworth, Gloucestershire, author of The Display of Heraldry of 1610? Upon learning that John Guillim was descended from a Hathaway family in Minsterworth, the question became more compelling. The search eventually uncovered numerous ties between William Shakespeare and Gloucestershire through his mother's Arden relatives, through neighbors in Stratford such as the Lucys and the Grevilles, and through Shakespeare's friends, such as Thomas Russell, overseer of Shakespeare's will, all of whom had extensive and long-standing family histories in Gloucestershire. In addition, branches of the Shakespeare family were established in Gloucestershire, particularly in Dursley, and Tewkesbury before, during, and after Shakespeare's time. Dursley is about twelve miles from Minsterworth, and Tewkesbury is about twenty-eight miles south of Stratford and about fifteen miles north of Minsterworth, so the Gloucestershire Shakespeares very possibly knew the Guillim family. While this search did not reveal any relationship between Shakespeare and John Guillim, the herald, it did uncover important connections many families had with Gloucestershire and with Shakespeare, ties that often lead to the Guillims: Hathaway, Throckmorton, Catesby, Russell, Denys, Wriothesley, Greville, Lucy, Winter, Berkeley, and others.

In the first book to provide a feminist analysis of early modern madness, Carol Thomas Neely reveals the mobility and heterogeneity of discourses of "distraction," the most common term for the condition in late-sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century England. Distracted Subjects shows how changing ideas of madness that circulated through medical, dramatic, and political texts transformed and gendered subjectivities. Supernatural causation is denied, new diagnoses appear, and stage representations proliferate. Drama sometimes leads and sometimes follows other cultural discourses—or forges its own prophetic figures of distraction. The Spanish Tragedy first links madness to masculine tragic self-representation, and Hamlet invents a language to dramatize feminine somatic illness. Innovative women's melancholy is theorized in medical and witchcraft treatises and then elaborated in the extended portrait of the Jailer's Daughter's distraction in The Two Noble Kinsmen. Lovesickness, newly diagnosed in women, demands novel cures, and allows expressions of transgressive sexual desire in treatises and in plays such as As You Like It. The rituals of possession and exorcism, intensely debated off stage, are mocked and exploited on stage in reiterated comic scenes of confinement that madden men to enhance women's power. Neely's final chapter provides a startling challenge to the critically alluring analogy between Bedlam and the early modern stage by documenting that Bethlem hospital offered care, not spectacle, whereas stage Bedlamites served metatheatrical and prophylactic, not mimetic, ends. An epilogue places this particular historical moment within the longer history of madness and shows how our own attitudes toward distraction are haunted by those earlier debates and representations.
