Zero-sum games are played for lethal stakes in these arresting stories by one of America’s most acclaimed writers, the award-winning, best-selling author of Blonde A brilliant young philosophy student bent on seducing her famous philosopher-mentor finds herself outmaneuvered; diabolically clever high school girls wreak a particularly apt sort of vengeance on sexual predators in their community; a woman stalked by a would-be killer may be confiding in the wrong former lover; a young woman is morbidly obsessed by her unfamiliar new role as “mother.” In the collection’s longest story, a much-praised cutting-edge writer cruelly experiments with “drafts” of his own suicide. In these powerfully wrought stories that hold a mirror up to our time, Joyce Carol Oates has created a world of erotic obsession, thwarted idealism, and ever-shifting identities. Provocative and stunning, Zero-Sum reinforces Oates’s standing as a literary treasure and an artist of the mysterious interior life.

Special Agent Kyrie Shea is asked to leave her profiling job Quantico to go to work for a very elite government agency known as Dark Force One. That should be a good thing, right? Problems arise when the all male agency doesn't give her the warmest of welcomes, sending her sometimes fragile ego into overdrive. Minor mishaps are soon elevated to full-on disasters as Kyrie fights for respect from her fellow agents, tracks a serial rapist, and in the process manages to incite the wrath of various other psychos in town. As if that's not enough to deal with, she has two very sexy males that are driving her to distraction, FBI agent, lover and best friend since childhood, Derrick Chamberlin, and her sexy new boss, Matthew Foxworth-who scares her more than the psychos out to get her. With a quirky wit, unyielding determination, and a little blind luck she'll face it all head on in pure Kyrie Shea style.
Once again things heat up for Special Agent Kyrie Shea and she has to use her investigative skills to figure out who's bombing the town locals. When one of those locals being targeted turns out to be one of her teammates, and her sister unwittingly becomes the only one who can identify the serial bomber, it's up to Kyrie and her intensely alluring boss, Matthew 'Fox' Foxworth to protect them. So the four of them retreat to a cabin in the Maine wilderness. That's when things really heat up. Kyrie thought the heat coming off the bomb blasts was hot, but being locked in a cabin with a boss she's overwhelmingly attracted to may just top it. Still unsure she's ready to give up her life-long friend and lover, Derrick Chamberlin she tries desperately to keep herself in control. Another problem arises when heat ignites inappropriately between her married sister and her teammate. It sparks Kyrie's anger, and lust is not the only urge she needs to rein in. It's a good thing Fox took her Taser away!
Special Agent Kyrie Shea thought things were finally settling down for her. There were no crazed killers after her, and she was enjoying a committed relationship with best friend and lover, Derrick Chamberlin. She should've known the normality wouldn't last... Her best friend and coroner moves to Hollow Cove, bringing with her a case that sparks an investigation into a new breed of serial killer. Next: She acquires a new nemesis in Army Lieutenant Raina Lowe, who's popped in for her yearly attempt at seducing Kyrie's boss, Matthew "Fox" Foxworth. Which causes jealousy to ignite, forcing Kyrie to face the fact her feelings for Fox are still there. And quite possibly, are even stronger than she realized. Then, mentor from the Quantico FBI head-quarters shows up to help solve the serial murders. Now she's dealing with his cynical attitude, hard drinking, and reckless sexual escapades while they track the killer cross country and back. Kyrie will have to face off with the nemesis, the killer, and the friend.
Special Agent Kyrie Shea takes her team to her hometown of Auburn Heights, Montana to track down a team of serial killers. That is, if she can bury the memories of the trauma she faced at the hands of a trusted family friend long enough to walk through the front door of her family home. On top of that, she continues to struggle in deciding who she is more compatible with; does she stick with life-long best friend and lover, Derrick Chamberlin? Or does she risk everything and succumb to the powerful connection that draws her ever closer to her new boss; sexy and mysterious, ex-Special Forces soldier, Matthew "Fox" Foxworth. As if she didn't have enough to worry about...it's Thanksgiving! She will have to deal with concerned parents, nosey sisters, and Derrick's parents. All of whom have no idea of their current relationship status. Kyrie will use her quirky humor to confront her three greatest fears: psycho killers, commitment, and family.
In September 1960 a television show emerged from the mists of prehistoric time to take its place as the mother of all animated sitcoms. The Flintstones spawned dozens of imitations, just as, two decades later, The Simpsons sparked a renaissance of primetime animation. This fascinating book explores the landscape of television animation, from Bedrock to Springfield, and beyond. The contributors critically examine the key issues and questions, including: How do we explain the animation explosion of the 1960s? Why did it take nearly twenty years following the cancellation of The Flintstones for animation to find its feet again as primetime fare? In addressing these questions, as well as many others, essays examine the relation between earlier, made-for-cinema animated production (such as the Warner Looney Toons shorts) and television-based animation; the role of animation in the economies of broadcast and cable television; and the links between animation production and brand image. Contributors also examine specific programmes like The Powerpuff Girls, Daria, Ren and Stimpy and South Park from the perspective of fans, exploring fan cybercommunities, investigating how ideas of 'class' and 'taste' apply to recent TV animation, and addressing themes such as irony, alienation, and representations of the family.
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “This is one of those books that will go down as the seminal work—the determinative work—in this field. . . . Terrifying.”—Rachel Maddow The first definitive account of the rise and fall of the Secret Service, from the Kennedy assassination to the alarming mismanagement of the Obama and Trump years, right up to the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6—by the Pulitzer Prize winner and #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of A Very Stable Genius and I Alone Can Fix It NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST Carol Leonnig has been reporting on the Secret Service for The Washington Post for most of the last decade, bringing to light the secrets, scandals, and shortcomings that plague the agency today—from a toxic work culture to dangerously outdated equipment to the deep resentment within the ranks at key agency leaders, who put protecting the agency’s once-hallowed image before fixing its flaws. But the Secret Service wasn’t always so troubled. The Secret Service was born in 1865, in the wake of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, but its story begins in earnest in 1963, with the death of John F. Kennedy. Shocked into reform by its failure to protect the president on that fateful day in Dallas, this once-sleepy agency was radically transformed into an elite, highly trained unit that would redeem itself several times, most famously in 1981 by thwarting an assassination attempt against Ronald Reagan. But this reputation for courage and excellence would not last forever. By Barack Obama’s presidency, the once-proud Secret Service was running on fumes and beset by mistakes and alarming lapses in judgment: break-ins at the White House, an armed gunman firing into the windows of the residence while confused agents stood by, and a massive prostitution scandal among agents in Cartagena, to name just a few. With Donald Trump’s arrival, a series of promised reforms were cast aside, as a president disdainful of public service instead abused the Secret Service to rack up political and personal gains. To explore these problems in the ranks, Leonnig interviewed dozens of current and former agents, government officials, and whistleblowers who put their jobs on the line to speak out about a hobbled agency that’s in desperate need of reform. “I will be forever grateful to them for risking their careers,” she writes, “not because they wanted to share tantalizing gossip about presidents and their families, but because they know that the Service is broken and needs fixing. By telling their story, they hope to revive the Service they love.”
User-Centered Design Stories is the first user-centered design casebook with cases covering the key tasks and issues facing UCD practitioners today. Intended for both students and practitioners, this book follows the Harvard Case study method, where the reader is placed in the role of the decision-maker in a real-life professional situation. In this book, the reader is asked to analyze dozens of UCD work situations and propose solutions for the problem set. The problems posed in the cases cover a wide variety of key tasks and issues faced by practitioners, including those related to organizational/managerial topics, UCD methods and processes, and technical/ project issues. The benefit of the casebook and its organization is that it offers new practitioners (as well as experienced practitioners working in new settings) valuable practice in decision-making that cannot be obtained by simply reading a book or attending a seminar. - The first User-Centered Design Casebook, with cases covering the key tasks and issues facing UCD practitioners today. - Each chapter based on real world cases with complex problems, giving readers as close to a real-world experience as possible. - Offers "the things you don't learn in school," such as innovative and hybrid solutions that were actually used on the problems discussed.
How do we understand glamour? Has it empowered women or turned them into objects? Once associated with modernity and the cutting edge, is it entirely bound up with nostalgia and tradition? This unique and fascinating book tells the story of glamour. It explores the changing meanings of the word, its relationship to femininity and fashion, and its place in twentieth century social history. Using a rich variety of sources - from women's magazines and film to social surveys and life histories - Carol Dyhouse examines with wit and insight the history and meaning of costume, cosmetics, perfume and fur. Dyhouse disentangles some of the arguments surrounding femininity, appearance and power, directly addressing feminist concerns. The book explores historical contexts in which glamour served as an expression of desire in women and an assertion of entitlement to the pleasures of affluence, finally arguing that glamour can't simply be dismissed as oppressive, or as male fantasy, but can carry celebratory meanings for women.

A history of Wisconsin’s Indigenous past, present, and future—in Native peoples’ own words. Treaties made in the 1800s between the United States and the Indigenous nations of what is now Wisconsin have had profound influence on the region’s cultural and political landscape. Yet few people realize that in the early part of that century, the Menominee and Ho-Chunk Nations of Wisconsin signed land treaties with several Indigenous nations from New York State. At the onset of the removal era, these eastern nations, including the Oneida Nation and the Six Nations Confederacy, were under constant pressure from the federal government and land speculators to move to lands around Green Bay and Lake Winnebago. In this groundbreaking book, Carol A. Cornelius has compiled a careful account of these nation-to-nation treaties, in large part in the words of those Indigenous leaders who served as the voices and representatives of their nations. Drawing on a rich collection of primary sources, Cornelius walks readers through how, why, and for whom these treaties were made and how the federal government’s failure and unwillingness to acknowledge their legitimacy led to the further loss of Indigenous lands. The living documents transcribed here testify to the complexity and sovereignty of Indigenous governance then and now, making this volume a vital resource for historians and an accessible introduction to Indigenous treatymaking in Wisconsin.

From fan-generated content on TikTok to music videos, the contemporary media landscape is becoming ever more vast, spectacular, and intense. In The Media Swirl Carol Vernallis examines short-form audiovisual media—Beyoncé’s Lemonade, brief sequences from Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, TikTok challenges, YouTube mashups, commercials, and many other examples—to offer ways of understanding digital media. She analyzes music videos by Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Janelle Monáe, Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, and others to outline how sound and image enhance each other and shape a viewer’s mood. Responding to today’s political-media landscape through discussions of Fox News and Presidential inaugurations, Vernallis shows how a media literacy that exceeds newscasts and campaign advertising is central to engaging with the democratic commons. Forays into industry studies, neuroscience, and ethics also inform her readings. By creating our own content and knowing what corporations, the wealthy, and the government do through media, Vernallis contends, we can create a more just world.
