The aim of the book is to analyse why poor nursing care is still occurring within care homes and hospitals in the UK, the USA, and Australia, despite numerous recommendations over more than 30 years. It became evident through the course of research that provision of care depended on the dominant political ethos, sometimes termed free market ideology or neoliberalism – terms describing an economic theory which claims the market should be the sole determinant of people’s lifestyle choices, and that the market should be free from government interference, since it is self-regulating. The Commodity of Care documents the pervasive influence of some neoliberal reforms of healthcare. The emphasis will be on what negates good nursing care delivered with a compassionate attitude. Any reform, from whatever political perspective, that promotes good, compassionate care should be supported by all nurses, who should equally oppose measures that lead to poor and indifferent care.

As a reporter for the local paper, Bodil also acts as confessor for the townspeople’s secrets, hopes, and fears. There’s Tarra and Morgan, whose marriage is crumbling under financial strain; Rudy, a struggling veteran; Jane, depressed and in love with Rudy; Pastor Kiefer, too proud to provide for his disillusioned flock; and Owen Wells and his wife, whose grandchildren were taken away by the state on false abuse charges. In today's world of business where organizational boundaries are blurry, intense competition dictates rapid change, and complex issues and relationships cut across departments, business units, and even companies, the old hierarchical command-and-control management approach is no longer sufficient. Distributed leadership approaches are necessary and no one individual can do it all. In fact, an enterprise is more than just the traditional organization. Value today is often created not just within a company, but also across a network of companies. Being able to connect the various components and to work collaboratively within the network is essential to maintaining competitive advantage. Leaders today must be capable of identifying potential partners, initiating and maintaining relationships, resolving conflicts, and reconfiguring their relationships. Cross-Enterprise Leadership is a new model for success in today's world of complexity and ambiguity. Leaders who adopt this approach will be more comfortable dealing with ambiguity, uncertainty, complexity and time pressures, and with creating value through networks of relationships. Small, domestic, entrepreneurial companies are, by their very nature, cross-enterprise focused. Entrepreneurs will tell you that they live in a world of uncertainty and ambiguity and that they constantly need to adjust on the fly. Equally, large multi-national companies like Wal-Mart, Nestle, or Coca-Cola are inherently complex and issues and relationships cut across functions, levels, geographies, and companies. Cross-Enterprise Leadership goes beyond a functional perspective to understanding the complexity of business issues from all angles and how they can be integrated, how leaders can rely almost entirely on influence when they may be operating without power or authority, and how they can develop the capacity to make decisions and implement them in an environment filled with uncertainty and complexity. Most managers operate like the traditional orchestra-waiting to do their written part. But there is no tidy score for business today. CEL enables today's leaders to be more like a jazz band, improvising and building off of one another, creating music in real time and in relationship to one another.

These are perilous times for Americans who need access to the legal system. Too many lawyers blatantly abuse power and trust, engage in reckless ethical misconduct, grossly unjust billing practices, and dishonesty disguised as client protection. All this has undermined the credibility of lawyers and the authority of the legal system. In the court of public opinion, many lawyers these days are guiltier than the criminals or giant corporations they defend. Is the public right? In this eye-opening, incisive book, Richard Zitrin and Carol Langford, two practicing lawyers and distinguished law professors, shine a penetrating light on the question everyone is asking: Why do lawyers behave the way they do? All across the country, lawyers view certain behavior as "ethical" while average citizens judge that same conduct "immoral." Now, with expert analysis of actual cases ranging from murder to class action suits, Zitrin and Langford investigate lawyers' behavior and its impact on our legal system. The result is a stunningly clear-eyed exploration of law as it is practiced in America today--and a cogent, groundbreaking program for legal reform.

A NEW EDITION UPDATED IN 2020 • Why is it so hard to say "I made a mistake" — and really believe it? When we make mistakes, cling to outdated attitudes, or mistreat other people, we must calm the cognitive dissonance that jars our feelings of self-worth. And so, unconsciously, we create fictions that absolve us of responsibility, restoring our belief that we are smart, moral, and right—a belief that often keeps us on a course that is dumb, immoral, and wrong. Backed by decades of research, Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me) offers a fascinating explanation of self-justification—how it works, the damage it can cause, and how we can overcome it. Extensively updated, this third edition has many recent and revealing examples, including the application of dissonance theory to divisive social issues such as the Black Lives Matter movement and he said/she said claims. It also features a new chapter that illuminates how cognitive dissonance is playing a role in the currently polarized political scene, changing the nation’s values and putting democracy itself at risk. “Every page sparkles with sharp insight and keen observation. Mistakes were made—but not in this book!” —Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness “A revelatory study of how lovers, lawyers, doctors, politicians—and all of us—pull the wool over our own eyes . . . Reading it, we recognize the behavior of our leaders, our loved ones, and—if we’re honest—ourselves, and some of the more perplexing mysteries of human nature begin to seem a little clearer.” —Francine Prose, O, The Oprah Magazine
This book is written to as a guide for all staff who provide care for residents in nursing and residential homes. Care in care homes is a highly skilled area and recognition of its importance is sadly lacking. Decisions regarding dilemmas of care, for example a resident going out alone, can result in ineffective solutions which may create abuse. The author has identified a number of dilemmas of care, based upon her considerable experience within the care home sector, supported where possible with reference to research. Staff need guidance in resolving these dilemmas. There is often a conflict between residents needs and wishes, staff's personal and professional aims, regulations and the requirements of inspectors. This book services to remind us who we are caring for and, hopefully, it will promote recognition of the skills needed to provide care in care homes and as well as aiding the decisions made by the staff who work in these homes.
