A penetrating study of the sister who betrayed and endangered her famous brother's legacy In 1901, a year after her brother Friedrich's death, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche published The Will to Power, a hasty compilation of writings he had never intended for print. In Nietzsche's Sister and the Will to Power, Carol Diethe contends that Förster-Nietzsche's own will to power and her desire to place herself--not her brother--at the center of cultural life in Germany are centrally responsible for Nietzsche's reputation as a belligerent and proto-Fascist thinker. Offering a new look at Nietzsche's sister from a feminist perspective, this spirited and erudite biography examines why Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche recklessly consorted with anti-Semites, from her own husband to Hitler himself, out of convenience and a desire for revenge against a brother whose love for her waned after she caused the collapse of his friendship with Lou Salomé. The book also examines their family dynamics, Nietzsche's dismissal of his sister's early writing career, and the effects of limited education on intelligent women. Diethe concludes by detailing Förster-Nietzsche's brief marriage and her subsequent colonial venture in Paraguay, maintaining that her sporadic anti-Semitism was, like most things in her life, an expedient tool for cultivating personal success and status. A volume in the series International Nietzsche Studies, edited by Richard Schacht
Focusing on feminism in Germany, Towards Emancipation examines some of the most influential women writers of the nineteenth century, from the late-Romantic writers, such as Bettina von Arnim and Johanna Schopenhauer, to writers who were active in the 1848 Revolution, such as Malwida von Meysenbug and Johanna Kinkel. The heart of the book is devoted to the leading proponents of emancipation, Hedwig Dohm, Helene Bohlau and the prolific Louise Otto-Peters, yet it also includes mainstream writers whose attitudes towards the movement range from lukewarm (the enormously popular Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach and Gabriele Reuter) to downright hostile (Lou Andreas-Salome and Franziska zu Reventlow).

The writer John O'Hara (1905-1970) came from Pottsville in Pennsylvania. He put his home town and the surrounding vicinity under a microscope to produce an account of 'The Anthracite Region' that rivals Edith Wharton's descriptions of New York and Sinclair Lewis's anatomy of Sauk Centre. With the discerning eye of a local resident, O'Hara recreated this coal-rich region and its people so well that his novelettes, novellas, novels, plays and short stories give a true record of his 'Pennsylvania Protectorate' in the latter part of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. In order to reveal the ethnographical, geographical and historical authenticity of the O'Hara Canon, this book examines his writings in the context of Pottsville and the borough of Tamaqua, as well as the nearby towns and villages. The author also investigates both O'Hara's genteel upbringing and his gangster stratum. The book explores the many dimensions of O'Hara's life from the time of his birth until his escape to New York City in 1928. New sources such as unpublished letters and interviews with O'Hara's family, friends and enemies provide important insights into O'Hara, as well as into Pottsville and the surrounding region.

A “sinister, edgy, delectably creepy” story of mistaken identity, murder, and madness from a #1 New York Times–bestselling author (San Francisco Chronicle). Tristram Heade is a reclusive, repressed Virginia bachelor and antiquarian book collector who has traveled to Philadelphia to keep an appointment with a fellow dealer. But when he arrives, his life takes an unexpected and dizzying turn. A train porter returns his lost wallet, but the identification inside belongs to a man named Angus Markham, a gambler and real estate prospector. When Tristram returns to his hotel, he’s greeted by staff as Markham, and in his room, he finds Markham’s suitcase and clothes—as well as Fleur Grunwald, a woman who certainly knows her lover, Markham, when she sees him. And she seems to desperately need his help. At first baffled, then intrigued, Tristram decides to play along—only to discover that he’s not in control of the game. Especially when he takes on Fleur and her sadistic husband and finds himself lost in a conspiracy of madness and murder. If only Tristram could be certain whether he’s to be the killer—or the victim. From a winner of countless awards, the author of such bestsellers as We Were the Mulvaneys and Black Water, You Can’t Catch Me is “a tense psychological suspense novel filled with dual identities, double crosses, and duplicity. It is also filled with philosophical and literary allusions suggesting that this is less about the mystery of Markham than about the fragile mystery of identity. It’s just what one would expect from the celebrated Joyce Carol Oates, who uses the pseudonym ‘Rosamond Smith’ for her psychological thrillers” (Library Journal).

This book starts out with basic facts but it quickly dives deeply in life’s fundamental paradoxes. It is a kind of quick guide for serious students who are keen on exploring those issues as a means of finding solution from suffering and life’s complexities. The ultimate goal is to find the knowledge that frees you from further dependence and feelings of inadequacy and lack. This book is based on traditional Vedanta and it is written by Vedanta students, Paul and Carol Bahder, in the tradition of Swami Dayananda, who is the world’s foremost Vedanta authority. German film is diverse and multi-faceted; its history includes five distinct German governments (Wilhelmine Germany, the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the German Democratic Republic), two national industries (Germany and Austria), and a myriad of styles and production methods. Paradoxically, the political disruptions that have produced these distinct film eras, as well as the natural inclination of artists to rebel and create new styles, allow for the construction of a narrative of German film. While the disjuncture generates distinct points of separation, it also highlights continuities between the ruptures. Outlining the richness of German film, The A to Z of German Cinema covers mainstream, alternative, and experimental film from 1895 to the present through a chronology, introductory essay, appendix of the 100 most significant German films, a bibliography, and hundreds of cross-referenced dictionary entries on directors, actors, films, cinematographers, composers, producers, and major historical events that greatly affected the direction and development of German cinema. The book's broad canvas will lead students and scholars of cinema to appreciate the complex nature of German film.

“I believe Dr. Rosedale’s method will positively shape our ultimate understanding of what constitutes healthy nutrition.” —Eric C. Westman, MD, New York Times–bestselling author Finally—the ultimate diet for fast, safe weight loss, lifelong health, and longer life, based on more than twenty years of research and the latest findings on appetite and weight. Metabolic specialist Ron Rosedale, MD, has designed the Rosedale Diet to regulate the powerful hormone leptin, which controls appetite and weight loss by telling the brain when to eat, how much to eat—and when to stop. New research shows that leptin may be one of the body’s most important hunger control mechanisms. Control leptin, and you control your weight. Dr. Rosedale’s 21-day diet plan is simple: Just select from the many foods on his “A” list, including “healthy-fat” foods such as avocados, nuts, olives, lobster, crab, shrimp, goat cheese, Cornish game hen, venison, and more. Then gradually add foods from the “B” list, such as steak, lamb chops, fruits, beans, and so on. A 28-day menu plan and more than 100 recipes, such as Dilled Salmon and Fresh Asparagus, Gingery Chicken Soup, Lasagna, Black Bean Wrap, Raspberry Mousse Cake, and French Silk Pie, make eating the Rosedale way deliciously easy. The Rosedale Diet will make you feel satisfied, reduce cravings, and put you in control of your “sweet tooth.” It can even help eliminate or reduce heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and other conditions associated with “natural” aging, as many of Dr. Rosedale’s patients can attest. You’ll find inspiring stories from them—and the power to control your weight and improve your health—in this groundbreaking book.
You've tried eating lots of protein, grape-fruit, rice cakes, or cottage cheese. You've tried not eating much of anything at all. You've tried diets recommended by doctors, models, actresses, or tabloids. But the pounds don't melt away like they're supposed to, and, even worse, they come back fast." "Bodystat can change all that. How? Not by changing the size of your dinner plate or how many times you chew your food or by sending you off to buy food you never heard of, but by changing your understanding of food and how your body uses it. In Bodystat, authors Eric Witt and Carol Wirth explain in clear, easy-to-understand language the scientific principles underlying the "set point" at which the body begins to resist fat loss, and how it can be reset. It's not time-consuming, expensive, complicated, or painful. In fact, it's as simple as low-fat eating and moderate exercise. Yes, you've heard that before, but here the authors walk you through how to understand labels, menus, and all that confusing exercise advice, so you can develop your own plan for lowering your fat "set point." Best of all, they offer lots of choices that you can tailor to your own preferences and habits." "Eric and Carol know their advice can help you, because it has helped so many of their friends and workshop participants. Carol's colleagues kept asking her how she could eat so much and look so good. They didn't know that Carol had yo-yoed for years while trying fad diets before she and Eric researched developing a healthier lifestyle that would work for them. Soon they were advising friends, then giving popular workshops, and now are sharing their ideas in Bodystat. They've included dozens of practical tips, twenty-seven of their favorite recipes, and, most important, the principles about diet and exercise that will empower you to be healthier and happier with your body - forever. You don't have to try to follow day-by-day diets full of food you hate or diagrammed exercises you can't figure out.
