Religious StudiesOver the last thirty years African American voices and perspectives have become essential to the study of the various theological disciplines. In 1904, Frank W. Swallow left behind his short-lived car dealership and began a successful cottage industry, printing his own hand-colored postcards. He was "the First to Introduce the Souvenir Post Card to One-Half of New England," according to the imprint of his trademark swallow. Many of Swallow's photographs are contained within this book, which tells a special history of Exeter, New Hampshire, between 1900 and 1940-a time when the horse and carriage era shifted to the automobile, hemlines rose a few inches, and electricity came to town. In 1869, the town of Tilton, previously known as Sanbornton Bridge or Bridge Village, came into its own when it separated from Sanbornton. Its foremost benefactor, Charles Elliott Tilton, requested the town be named in honor of his ancestors, who were early settlers of the area. Charles added a touch of aristocracy to the town's character, decorating the streets with European statues and elegant buildings. Tilton's wealth was created by factories along the Winnipesaukee River as well as by large agricultural and dairy farms north of the river. A tourist industry that was centered around Lake Winnisquam began in the eastern hamlets of Lochmere and Winnisquam. Today, Interstate 93 passes through Tilton, which is now a gateway to the vacation lands of the White Mountains and Lake Winnipesaukee.
American literature abounds with orphans who experience adoption or placements that resemble adoption. These stories do more than recount adventures of children living away from home. They tell an American story of family and national identity. In narratives from the seventeenth to the early twentieth century, adoption functions as narrative event and trope that describes the American migratory experience, the impact of Calvinist faith, and the growth of democratic individualism. The roots of literary adoption appear in the discourse of Puritan settlers, who ambivalently took leave of their birth parent country and portrayed themselves as abandoned children. Believing they were chosen children of God, they also prayed for spiritual adoption and emulated God's grace by extending adoption to others. Nineteenth-century adoption literature develops from this notion of adoption as salvation and from simultaneous attachments to the Old World and the New. In domestic fiction of the mid-nineteenth century, adoption also reflects a focus on nurture in childrearing, increased mobility in the nation, and middle-class concerns over immigration and urbanization, assuaged when the orphan finds a proper, loving home. Adoption signals fresh starts and the opportunity for success without genealogical constraints, especially for white males, but inflected by gender and racial biases, it often entails dependency for girls and children of color. A complex signifier of difference, adoption gives voice to sometimes contradictory calls to origins and fresh beginning; to feelings of worthiness and unworthiness. In writings from Cotton Mather to Edith Wharton, it both replicates and offers an alternative to the genealogical norm, evoking ambivalence as it shapes national mythologies.

Few people in America today live with the dangers and deprivations that Appalachian coal mining families experience. But to the eighteen West Virginia women Carol Giesen interviewed for this book, hard times are just everyday life. These coal miners' wives, ranging in age from late teens to eighty-five, tell of a way of life dominated by coal mining—and shadowed by a constant fear of death or injury to a loved one. From birth to old age, they experience the social and economic pressures of the coal mining industry. Few families in these communities earn their living in any job outside a coal mine, and most young men and women find no advantage in completing their education. Women whose stresses and strengths have seldom been disclosed reveal here their personal stories, their understanding of the dangers of coal mining, their domestic concerns, the place of friends and faith in their lives, and their expectations of the future. What emerges is a deeply moving story of determination in the face of adversity. Over and over, these women deal with the frustrations caused by strikes, layoffs, and mine closings, often taking any jobs they can find while their husbands are out of work. Endlessly; their home concerns revolve around protecting their husbands from additional work or worry. Always there is fear for their husbands' lives and the pervasive anger they feel toward the mining companies. For some, there is also the pain of losing a loved one to the mines. Behind these women's acceptance of their circumstances lies a pragmatic understanding of the politics of mining and of the communities in which they live. Giesen's insights into the experiences of miners' wives contribute much to our understanding of the impact of industry, economics, and politics on women's lives.
