Written in the thirteenth century, the Icelandic prose sagas, chronicling the lives of kings and commoners, give a dramatic account of the first century after the settlement of Iceland—the period from about 930 to 1050. To some extent these elaborate tales are written versions of traditional sagas passed down by word of mouth. How did they become the long and polished literary works that are still read today? The evolution of the written sagas is commonly regarded as an anomalous phenomenon, distinct from contemporary developments in European literature. In this groundbreaking study, Carol J. Clover challenges this view and relates the rise of imaginative prose in Iceland directly to the rise of imaginative prose on the Continent. Analyzing the narrative structure and composition of the sagas and comparing them with other medieval works, Clover shows that the Icelandic authors, using Continental models, owe the prose form of their writings, as well as some basic narrative strategies, to Latin historiography and to French romance.

Archaeologists working in the Moche Valley of Peru have uncovered a number of tombs representing various cultures that flourished there prior to European contact. This book provides a full description of 103 such burials, spanning a period of more than 3,500 years. Each burial is documented with an accurate illustration of every artifact found, as well as details on the location, matrix, and construction of the graves, the individuals in the graves, and the placement of all the associated goods. This information constitutes an important resource for solving problems of ceramic chronology and style change. Age and sex data given for the burials will also enable scholars to establish status differences that existed in the pre-Columbian past. Finally, the authors have compared their sample with all the north coast burials previously reported, showing how their findings may be used to ascertain similarities and differences throughout the highland Andean region. Ancient Burial Patterns of the Moche Valley, Peru is the first diachronic study of burial practices for any Andean region. It not only demonstrates changes in funerary practices in the area but also provides insight into the nature of local cultural development. It will be useful to specialists in Andean and New World archaeology as well as to collectors of pre-Columbian art.

Drawing on her work in a small Turkish village of Sunni Muslims, she shows us that the images are categorically different, hierarchically ordered, and unequally valued. The ways in which the creation of a child is understood in Turkey furnish a key to understanding a whole range of Turkish attitudes toward sexuality and gender, honor and shame, authority and submission, time and space, inside and outside, open and closed. Moreover, the symbols and meanings by which they represent procreation provide the means for understanding relationships between such seemingly disparate elements as the body, family, house, village, nation, this-world and other-world. Delaney points out that these symbols do not embellish reality; they provide the key to a particular conception of it, a conception that gives coherence to social life. The patterns revealed are not distinctly Turkish; they also comment on some of our own deeply-held assumptions and values about procreation.

A second difference is that this book achieves a balance between textbooks that emphasize formal modeling and those that emphasize the history of the field, empirical evidence, case studies, and policy analysis. This text puts more emphasis on the micro-foundations (i.e., consumer and producer theory), classic game theoretic models, and recent contributions from behavioral economics that are pertinent to industrial organization. This book began as a series of hand-scribbled notes, never intended to be seen by anyone but me. In March of 2018, I made a discovery that rocked me to my very core and, in searching for a way to cope, I began to write - just random thoughts, jotted down in no particular order. I wrote about my childhood, my wonderful dad, my emotionally abusive mother, the small town where we lived. I wrote about my father's love of the military, what my family was like, and what my siblings and I did as kids in the 40s and 50s. I became obsessed. Sometimes up until 3am, other times sleeping a few hours and waking in the middle of the night to write until daylight arrived, I could think of nothing else. Often, I cried as I wrote. After a while I became completely exhausted. I put it all away and let it sit for a month, then started again, a little less emotionally distraught. I began to think it made a good story, perhaps even a book, so I gathered all of the random, messy notes together and began the difficult task of putting them in some kind of sensible order. Some were in a notebook, others on separate pieces of paper of all different sizes. Some were scribbled upside down or along the edge of a page or on the back of an envelope, and some were vague thoughts of just a word or two. That's how it began. Once it started to take form, I expanded the scope of it, describing my strange and unsuccessful marriage and the difficulty of becoming a single parent of four, on my own both emotionally and financially. There's lots more, but I don't want to give it all away! And yes, it's all true. I hope you enjoy reading it.

I have felt for many years that there have perhaps never been a 75 to 100 years that have seen so much progress and change, both for good and bad. Life has always been mixed with both good times and bad times, and so it will until the Lord returns. But this type of good and bad is not what I am writing about. In the horse and buggy era and early years of the car, there were a lot of hard times: poverty, sickness, and epidemics, but by and large, the moral fiber of most people was much better than now. There are many things to blame, but the sad part of this is that I believe the Christians are the most to blame for not getting involved. The scapegoat idea: it's all in the Lord's hands, we don't have to worry or do anything. In the meantime, much has happened because of the ACLU, our court system, the pressure of the entertainment world and the Democratic party, and too many Republicans voting wrong. It is already illegal for the kids to pray in school or even take their Bible to school. They are trying to get "In God We Trust" off our money and take for God and Country out of the Pledge of Allegiance However, I feel there is a trend now of thinking seriously about God and morals and hard work, and there will have to be if this world is going to last. So I am dedicating this to my nine children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and anyone who reads it that it will help them see what a change has taken place in the 1900's and that it might help them on the road of life, plus hopefully bring some enjoyment.
