This book demonstrates that under the leadership of President Ronald Reagan and through the mechanism of his National Security Council staff, the United States developed and executed a comprehensive grand strategy, involving the coordinated use of the diplomatic, informational, military, and economic instruments of national power, and that grand strategy led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. In doing so, it refutes three orthodoxies: that Reagan and his administration deserve little credit for the end of the Cold War, with most of credit going to Mikhail Gorbachev; that Reagan’s management of the National Security Council staff was singularly inept; and that the United States is incapable of generating and implementing a grand strategy that employs all the instruments of national power and coordinates the work of all executive agencies. The Reagan years were hardly a time of interagency concord, but the National Security Council staff managed the successful implementation of its program nonetheless.
This book is a study of proconsulship, a form of delegated political-military leadership historically associated with the governance of large empires. Opening with a conceptual and historical analysis of proconsulship as an aspect of imperial or quasi-imperial rule generally, it surveys its origins and development in the late Roman Republic and its manifestations in the British Empire. The main focus is proconsulship in American history. Beginning with the occupation of Cuba and the Philippines after the Spanish-American War, it discusses the role of General Douglas MacArthur in East Asia during and after World War II, the occupation of Germany (focusing on General Lucius Clay), and proconsular leadership during the Vietnam War and the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan at the turn of the twenty-first century. An additional chapter provides an assessment of the evolution of American political-military command and control and decision making after the end of the Cold War.

This community had an impact on the history of the English nation out of all proportion with its size—and yet its own history is glimpsed only dimly, if at all, in most modern accounts of the period. The Papist Represented reincorporates the history of the English Catholic community into the field of eighteenth-century literary studies. It examines the intersections of literary, religious, and cultural history as they pertain to the slow acceptance by both Protestants and Catholics of the latter group’s permanent minority status. By focusing on the Catholic community’s perspectives and activities, it deepens and complicates our understanding of the cultural processes that contributed to the significant progress of the Catholic emancipation movement over the course of the century. Balancing his life from a fulcrum that pivots from a personal to a societal vantage point requires him to navigate many roads with numerous twists and turns. The controversy pushed Massachusetts to the brink of collapse and spurred a significant exodus. The Puritans who founded Massachusetts were poised between the Middle Ages and the modern world, and in many ways, they helped to bring the modern world into being. The Trial of Anne Hutchinson plunges participants into a religious world that will be unfamiliar to many of them. Yet the Puritans' passionate struggles over how far they could tolerate a diversity of religious opinions in a colony committed to religious unity were part of a larger historical process that led to religious freedom and the modern concept of separation of church and state. Beauty engages fourth-century bishop Gregory of Nyssa to address beauty's place in theology and the broader world. Jordon Frost and Colt McCoy were asked by U.S. President Hugh North to help his intelligence investigators find the person, persons, group or groups, responsible for what was believed to be a terrorist attack that sank a world-class cruise ship near Puerto Rico, a U.S. Caribbean island Commonwealth. Nine hundred passengers and crew were killed in the ear-shattering blast. Frost, McCoy and the other investigators started their search with zero information. All they had to work with came from news reports originating in the Middle East. One repeated the phrase "Praise Be to Allah." Another came from a news reporter. He said: "We have just learned a man identified only as the Barbary Lion has claimed responsibility for the sinking ship and the loss of life.
Writing is an exercise for creating and expressing political, social, and existential thoughts on paper. A Jar of Clay is a quasi-memoir focusing on current and global events that shape our society and one’s view of oneself in relationship to others. Clay, as a metaphor, demonstrates how all people’s spiritual beings are molded by their cultural surroundings, but after a jar is formed and filled with water, it has the potential to overflow allowing them to inscribe their own footprints on the path of life. Our American society is dominated mostly by activity and accomplishments and less by introspection and reflection. It takes effort and courage to go against the grain of our heritage to constantly search for one’s purpose in order to participate in the larger conversation of life. I hope to pursue a meaningful dialogue with myself and my readers.
