Progressives who opposed the Trump administration's policies found themselves repeatedly relying on constitutional principles grounded in federalism, separation of powers, and free speech to resist the federal government. Although many progressives had either criticized or underemphasized those principles before Trump, the principles became vital to progressive causes after Trump was elected. Using dozens of examples from the ways in which Trump abused presidential powers, this book explains how the three sets of principles can help mitigate the harms that autocratic leaders in the Trump mold can inflict on both democratic institutions and vulnerable minorities. In doing so, the book urges progressives to follow this rule of thumb in the post-Trump era: If a constitutional principle was worth deploying to resist Trump's harmful policies and autocratic governance, then it is worth defending in the post-Trump era even if it makes the short-term attainment of progressive objectives more difficult. This type of principled constitutionalism is essential not only because being principled is good in and of itself, but also because being principled in matters related to federalism, separation of powers, and free speech will help both advance progressive causes over the long run and reduce the threats posed by future autocratic leaders in the Trump mold to our system of self-governance, to our democratic values, and to traditionally subordinated minorities. Going forward, progressives should promote and defend constitutional principles grounded in federalism, separation of powers, and free speech regardless of whether they have an ally or an opponent in the White House.

In a lively overview of a distinguished body of cognitive developmental research among nonhuman primates, Gomez looks at knowledge of the physical world, causal reasoning (including the chimpanzee-like errors that human children make), and the contentious subjects of ape language, theory of mind, and imitation. Attempts to teach language to chimpanzees, as well as studies of the quality of some primate vocal communication in the wild, make a powerful case that primates have a natural capacity for relatively sophisticated communication, and considerable power to learn when humans teach them. Gomez concludes that for all cognitive psychology's interest in perception, information-processing, and reasoning, some essential functions of mental life are based on ideas that cannot be explicitly articulated. Nonhuman and human primates alike rely on implicit knowledge. Studying nonhuman primates helps us to understand this perplexing aspect of all primate minds.

The all-volunteer 'Blue Division' was a formation that allowed Franco's technically neutral Spain to support Nazi Germany's invasion of Russia. Following initial training in Germany, the Blue Division's units were sent to the Eastern Front in August 1941, where, after a 40-day march to the front, the Division fought in several major actions including Leningrad. In 1943, with the tide turning against the Axis forces in Russia, the Division was ordered to be withdrawn, yet many men chose to stay on and serve with the Volunteer Legion. Even after the collapse in the East, some volunteered to serve with Waffen-SS units through to the fall of Berlin in 1945. This book narrates the experiences of the common soldier, exploring his motivation for serving the Wehrmacht, and detailing his dramatic experiences in a brutal and hostile theatre of World War II.

This Novel tells about the practice of American medicine from colonial times through the 20th century, and its effects. Medicine was in its infancy. Epidemics of malaria, dysentery, yellow fever, and others, decimated the populace. Medications were few, and deadly elements like arsenic and opium were commonly used. Fortunately, Traveling Medicine Shows brought cures, and elixirs (magical or medicinal), plus entertainment, to the people living in small and large towns and cities. They relieved the boredom of open spaces and rural living; some of them brought musical entertainment. The Travis Traveling Medicine Show had a sterling reputation. It provided medications to the populace, and was ethical in not selling any medicine they thought would harm their customers. The main characters, Charles Reynolds and Carole Blanchard, live in Schenectady, New York. Charles studied to become an apothecary, and Carole became a singer and took voice lessons in famous musical conservatories. They were both hired by the Travis Traveling Medicine Emporium and performed as its top singers. It is possible that young apothecaries who frequented the Shows may have learned of the toxicity of certain patent medicines from customers of the Shows, and decided to look into the matter and if possible, eliminate them. The motivated young men and women employed in Patent Medicine Production and Marketing, sometimes found each other and fell in love. This is also their story.
