Questo libro si apre e si chiude con il racconto di alcuni colloqui. Da una parte, un allenatore italiano fra i più vincenti. Dall'altra, due fra i più importanti club d'Europa. In mezzo a queste scene da film di Sergio Leone, come un lungo flashback, scorre una vita di gioco e di passione. Carlo Ancelotti, uno dei grandi protagonisti del calcio italiano, ce la racconta con la schiettezza e lo spirito pungente che gli vengono dalle sue origini contadine. "Uno su mille ce la fa", e lui è quell'uno. Centrocampista forse un po' lento, ma caparbio e con una lucida visione di gioco, ha avuto due grandi maestri, uno agli antipodi dell'altro: Liedholm e Sacchi. Da lì, la vocazione irresistibile a fare l'allenatore. Attenendosi semplicemente ai risultati, Carletto da Reggiolo ha vinto tutto. Eppure, la sua carriera non è stata sempre in discesa; sembra piuttosto un percorso avventuroso, scandito da delusioni e gioie regalate dai suoi ragazzi — fra i tanti, Zizou, il più grande, "cometa discesa dal cielo", Kaká "il secondo più forte che io abbia mai allenato, di sicuro il più intelligente" o Ronaldo "se solo si fosse impegnato un po' di più " —, dal mantra del Presidente "Voglio vincere tutto e voglio divertire", nonché da inebrianti trionfi ma anche da clamorose sconfitte (da cui però si impara a risorgere). Il Milan è la squadra che ha conquistato il cuore di Ancelotti ("e sì che da ragazzino ero interista, pazzo per Sandro Mazzola"). Al Milan Carlo è stato il secondo allenatore per durata di servizio, appena dopo quell'altro campione di umanità e competenza calcistica che rispondeva al nome di Nereo Rocco. E ora, diventato ambasciatore del calcio italiano all'estero, Carletto è apprezzato come un prodotto d.o.c., da esportazione. Che però non cambia. E che, ovunque sarà, avrà sempre un diavolo nel cuore.
