When Edvard Grieg came to give his first concerts in London, he had the world at his feet. As the first composer to transmute the sights and sounds of his own spectacular country into music, he was held to be both prophet and pioneer, and English writers described him as the most popular of all living composers, commenting, when he returned to London the following year, on the 'Grieg fever' that raged in the capital. Between 1862 and 1906 Grieg spent some six months of his life in this country, for most of the time engaged in giving concerts of his own music as conductor, solo pianist and accompanist. Celebrated by his fellow musicians - among them Delius, Parry, Henry Wood and Grainger - Grieg was befriended by royalty, heaped with honours that included doctoral degrees from Cambridge and Oxford, pleaded in high quarters the cause of Norwegian independence, and found new friends who effected a profound change in his religious outlook. This book explores the impact he had on England as well as examining what the country meant to him, showing how England had a far greater influence on Grieg's life and career than hashitherto been recorded. Through a philological approach to Gramsci’s original texts, this book alters the debate around conjunctural analysis and offers means to reinterpret cultural studies and its relationship to its founding thinkers.

The book describes the building of Fiddlestyx, Mr. Metzs summer music school complete with stage, practice cabins, and farm to provide the guests with food. His next memories were of Bob Metz, Mr. Metzs nephew, a role model for a young boy growing up on a farm who provided him with a positive attitude, comfort, care, and devotion following a tragic accident. Other powerful memories were of his father, a former farmer on Sharon Mountain and a First Selectman of the Town of Sharon, and of his grandfather, a builder, carpenter, and cabinet maker in Sharon. Throughout the book there are stories about things few people know about. Who ever heard of a cowpound on Sharon Mountain, or knew about the reason for the Town Poor Farm? Who knew the town of Sharon had a 3rd District one room school house located on Sharon Mountain? Who has ever heard of swimming pools for pigs? The author writes about simple things of the time such as the three different types of haymaking that dont exist today; about raising calves, working with horses for plowing fields, bringing milk to the milk stands, feeding twenty-two cats at once and about raising a bull calf for a short while before realizing it was a heifer calf, who went on to become the best milker in the herd. Funny things happened in those seventeen years; such things as a black snake he wrapped in a typewriter and a dead woodchuck he hid under the front seat of a friends old pickup truck, a full fledged manure fight he had with his brother, and the throwing of the baby sitters shoes out in the snow. The memories are fun, joyful and historical. This is an account of personal relationships and their effect on the history of the area.

Analyzing the Black Panther Party, specifically Kathleen Cleaver’s break with the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee and her contributions to the Party, Operaismo (or Workerism) in Italy and the relationship between shifting organizational strategies, inventive tactics, and novel and expansive ways to theorize class struggles, and the communal composition of “Worker-Recovered Enterprise Movements” in contemporary Argentina, this book shows how movement ideologies change and how meanings structure organizations, mobilizations, and futures. In The Cultural Production of Social Movements ideology is neither a static set of principles, nor is an unconscious orientation towards power and governance. Rather, it is the contentious, democratizing, and deliberative processes—which become realized as tactics in protests, struggles, defeats, and victories—that makes the relationship between movements, and what they “mean” conscious to its participants.

This book bridges an important gap between two major approaches to mass communication -- historical and social scientific. To do so, it employs a theory of communication that unifies social, cultural and technological concerns into a systematic and formal framework that is then used to examine the impact of print within the larger socio-cultural context and across multiple historical contexts. The authors integrate historical studies and more abstract formal representations, achieving a set of logically coherent and well-delimited hypotheses that invite further exploration, both historically and experimentally. A second gap that the book addresses is in the area of formal models of communication and diffusion. Such models typically assume a homogeneous population and a communication whose message is abstracted from the complexities of language processing. In contrast, the model presented in this book treats the population as heterogeneous and communications as potentially variable in their content as they move across speakers or readers. Written to address and overcome many of the disciplinary divisions that have prevented the study of print from being approached from the perspective of a unified theory, this book employs a focused interdisciplinary position that encompasses several domains. It shows the underlying compatibility between cognitive and social theory; between the study of language and cognition and the study of technology; between the postmodern interest in the instability of meaning and the social science interest in the diffusion of information; between the effects of technology and issues of cultural homogeneity and heterogeneity. Overall, this book reveals how small, relatively non-interactive, disciplinary-specific conversations about print are usefully conceived of as part of a larger interdisciplinary inquiry.

Liberated Freed from the Flagpole

The Metamorphosis of the Flag Since 9/11

Looking out from my office window overlooking the skyline of New York City on September the 11th 2001, I watched history unfold before my very eyes. The sight of the billowing smoke from the World Trade Towers will forever be etched in my memory. But as soon as the Ground Zero ashes had cooled off and the dark clouds of disbelief lifted, a red-hot patriotism started spreading like a wildfire across the country. Nothing could douse it. This fire touched every corner of the country from remote small-town America to the large urban centers. Americans felt the desire to show their love, compassion and goodwill to their fellow citizens. The flag was the symbol they used to show each other that they could persevere and overcome. Putting down my artist’s pen in favor of the camera, I began in earnest a twenty-year documentary journey to capture this American spirit. I started off snapping photos in my neighborhood, my town, then all across my state, then finally branching out to all regions of the US. Traveling alone, in a rented car, I crisscrossed 45 states in my hunt to discover as many flag tributes as possible. I enjoyed every minute of it—eating at local diners, talking to friendly locals and always finding things that I never expected. I felt an urgency, knowing that a lot of the displays would have a short life span, I wanted to preserve the images for historical purposes. The few years after 9/11 especially represented a unique time in American history. Americans over the past twenty years have been breaking tradition and respectfully taking liberties with “Old Glory.” The flag is no longer only a piece of fabric attached to a flagpole; it has been freed and untethered. The major reason, after 9/11, they flew off the shelves and sold out. American ingenuity came to the fore. Citizens have transformed the flag to express their patriotic zeal, using personal materials or objects they had on hand. With great imagination and creativity, the flag continues to evolve. The wide range of unconventional materials used are surprising and sometimes amusing; flag painted cars, trees, murals, houses, and even flag tattooed people. Although, you would not know it after listening to the mainstream media, the majority of Americans still love “Old Glory.” After all these years, I am still finding wonderful flag images and writing the stories behind them. To take a great photo, I remember to keep my focus on God, and then see what develops! Every time I start off on a road trip, I take my camera and Bible and start the morning with a short prayer; “God please protect me on the road and please help me to find beautiful flags today.” More often than not, I am surprised that God actually answered my prayers, and helped me be at the right place and at the right time. To this day, I am excited to see what God has in store for me. I truly feel like that I have been led. Some of my amazing “Godincidences” or “God winks,” are recounted in the following pages.

This biography follows Nolan's life from the backwoods of Kentucky to her death in 1948.
