In 2005, surgeons in France removed part of the face from a cadaver and grafted it onto the head of a 38-year-old woman grossly disfigured by a dog attack. Three years later, in December, 2008, surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic announced they had performed the first U.S. face transplant. Although modern culture is accustomed to pushing medicine and the human body beyond all limits, the world's first partial face transplant and the seven that have followed have caused a stir that still reverberates globally. This book begins with the story of Isabelle Dinoire, the recipient of the first face transplant, and chronicles her surgery and battles with tissue rejection. Its scope widens with a look at how surgical teams, including three U.S. transplant teams, are in a global race to perform the first full face transplant, and at how medical history has led up to this point—with prior successful transplants ranging from body parts as simple as cornea to those as neurologically complicated as the heart, a hand, and a penis. The most novel among these surgeries—the face transplant—conjures up particular and expansive psychological issues. Authors Bluhm and Clendenin show how transplant recipients struggle with functional issues including a lifetime of anti-rejection drugs, a danger highlighted by the recent death of the second face transplant patient, in China. But just as challenging in the case of face transplant is the psychological effect on—and potential threat to—identity. Who are you, if suddenly your face—or a significant portion of it—is not what you were born with? What is it like to look in the mirror, and see a face that is not the one you have always had? Dinoire lamented, "It will never be me." That statement is an absolute simplification of the identity issues a face transplant can create, explain the authors. Bluhm and Clendenin show how, across history and media, humankind—via medicine, literature, film, and other media—has dreamed of a day when face transplants would be possible. With so many disfigurements occurring among the military in Iraq, and experimental face transplants too expensive for implementation in the private sector, it is likely that the U.S. military will take the reins and further face transplant techniques as quickly as possible to serve injured personnel.

You will come to know all about God’s amazing grace, and how He used some very difficult times to bring about a significant change within me. After having a pessimistic attitude for many years, I finally came to the conclusion that God created me; therefore, He must understand me. I started praying, and talking to God about issues that I did not feel comfortable talking to anyone else about. This book of inspirational poetry is comprised of my authentic conversations with God. Through my poetry, I was set free to be my own unique self. Throughout my journey and in the midst of trials therein, I have learned to appreciate precious things that I once took for granted such as life, health, and family. God has affirmed that He is in control of my life and has a great plan for me. I do not know the complete depth or details of that plan, but what I do know is God wants me to share my life experiences. I want everyone to know there is life after heartaches and pain. There Is Life At The End of The Tunnel. Hopefully, this book will serve as a token of God’s love and encouragement that helps everyone realize, “you do not have to be a victim or prisoner of your past. You do not have to be held captive by the trials and tribulations in life. You have the ability to turn your pain into power rather than allowing it to control you. You have a choice.” Therefore, choose to be a victor and not a victim. I pray that the presence of God is felt while reading this book, He speaks directly to your heart, and inspire you to believe you deserve to live a great life on purpose, in spite of your flaws, and the mistakes that you have made. A transatlantic trade in servants was developed initially and some groups, including Quakers, and those convicted after the Monmouth Rebellion, were coerced into settling, but in the end the colonists came to rely on slavery. Sources document the growing involvement of English traders in the sale of enslaved Africans as well as the development of laws and the administration of justice on the islands.

An analysis of how economic theories can be used to understand disordered and pathological gambling that calls on empirical evidence about behavior and the brain and argues that addictive gambling is the basic form of all addiction. The explanatory power of economic theory is tested by the phenomenon of irrational consumption, examples of which include such addictive behaviors as disordered and pathological gambling. Midbrain Mutiny examines different economic models of disordered gambling, using the frameworks of neuroeconomics (which analyzes decision making in the brain) and picoeconomics (which analyzes patterns of consumption behavior), and drawing on empirical evidence about behavior and the brain. The book describes addiction in neuroeconomic terms as chronic disruption of the balance between the midbrain dopamine system and the prefrontal and frontal serotonergic system, and reviews recent evidence from trials testing the effectiveness of antiaddiction drugs. The authors argue that the best way to understand disordered and addictive gambling is with a hybrid picoeconomic-neuroeconomic model.

This comprehensive study of Beckett's art proposes a doubly contextualized reading of his later works: Carla Locatelli reads late Beckett through his previous writings, and relates them to the literary, philosophical, and critical community which surrounds him. To appreciate his contribution as an epistemological rhetorician, she proposes a multidisciplinary approach that draws upon a remarkably wide range of theorists, including Kierkegaard, Husserl, Heidegger, Peirce, Jakobson, Deleuze, Lacan, and Derrida. In Part One of this study, Locatelli traces the evolution of Beckett's writing, proposing that his principal concern devolves more and more upon the essential character of representation and its role in the constitution and signification of the subject. Part One also provides a history of this thematic, showing how Beckett's writing effects a radical displacement of representation from function to object of discourse. In Part Two, Locatelli focuses on Beckett's fiction after the Nobel Prize of 1969 , and on the epistemological and aesthetic issues in Company (1980), ill seen ill said (1981), and Worstward Ho (1983). She examines his "unwording" in this "Second Trilogy," and defines it as a process of subtraction that probes into the most basic mode of our being in the world. Here Beckett proposes, as Locatelli suggests , a very real hermeneutics of experience, beyond the "schools of suspicion" which are still influencing some postmodernist thinking. This volume will be of particular value to scholars and students of twentieth-century English literature, French literature, and literary theory .
