This book provides a comprehensive and thorough guide to those readers who are lost in the often-confusing context of weld fatigue. It presents straightforward information on the fracture mechanics and material background of weld fatigue, starting with fatigue crack initiation and short cracks, before moving on to long cracks, crack closure, crack growth and threshold, residual stress, stress concentration, the stress intensity factor, J-integral, multiple cracks, weld geometries and defects, microstructural parameters including HAZ, and cyclic stress-strain behavior. The book treats all of these essential and mutually interacting parameters using a unique form of analysis.
This book presents a computational scheme for calculating the electronic properties of crystalline systems at an ab-ini tio Hartree-Fock level of approximation. The first chapter is devoted to discussing in general terms the limits and capabilities of this approximation in solid state studies, and to examining the various options that are open for its implementation. The second chapter illustrates in detail the algorithms adopted in one specific computer program, CRYSTAL, to be submitted to QCPE. Special care is given to illustrating the role and in:fluence of computational parameters, because a delicate compromise must always be reached between accuracy and costs. The third chapter describes a number of applications, in order to clarify the possible use of this kind of programs in solid state physics and chemistry. Appendices A, B, and C contain various standard expressions, formulae, and definitions that may be useful for reference purposes; appendix D is intended to facilitate the interpretations of symbols, conventions, and acronyms that occur in the book. Thanks are due to all those who have contributed to the implementation and test of the CRYSTAL program, especially to V.R. Saunders and M. Causal, and to F. Ricca, E. Ferrero, R. Or lando, E. Ermondi, G. Angonoa, P. Dellarole, G. Baracco.
Allergic skin diseases belong to the most common dermatoses. This book deals with fundamental (in particular, immunological aspects), as wel l as clinical symptoms and therapeutic strategies of the allergic skin diseases.
Object Lessons and the Formation of Knowledge explores the museums, libraries, and special collections of the University of Michigan on its bicentennial. Since its inception, U-M has collected and preserved objects: biological and geological specimens; ethnographic and archaeological artifacts; photographs and artistic works; encyclopedia, textbooks, rare books, and documents; and many other items. These vast collections and libraries testify to an ambitious vision of the research university as a place where knowledge is accumulated, shared, and disseminated through teaching, exhibition, and publication. Today, two hundred years after the university’s founding, museums, libraries, and archives continue to be an important part of U-M, which maintains more than twenty distinct museums, libraries, and collections. Viewed from a historic perspective, they provide a window through which we can explore the transformation of the academy, its public role, and the development of scholarly disciplines over the last two centuries. Even as they speak to important facets of Michigan’s history, many of these collections also remain essential to academic research, knowledge production, and object-based pedagogy. Moreover, the university’s exhibitions and displays attract hundreds of thousands of visitors per year from the campus, regional, and global communities. Beautifully illustrated with color photographs of these world-renowned collections, this book will appeal to readers interested in the history of museums and collections, the formation of academic disciplines, and of course the University of Michigan.
Was soll da noch schiefgehen? Vor allem, wenn er sich mehr als nur gut mit seinem Kursleiter versteht.
This illustrated volume presents an overview of Beckmann's work, from his early years in Germany, to his decade in exile in Amsterdam, to his final year in the USA. A critical analysis attempts to decipher Beckmann's expressionist language and to outline the themes that run through his work.

Understanding American English is one of the first challenges that foreign nationals encounter in the U.S. corporate culture because American business conversation is riddled with sports references and expressions. Without that knowledge, business and social opportunities are lost or wasted by non-Americans (and non-sports fans) who work with or for Americans simply because they don't know how to take advantage of sports talk to build strong relationships. "Talking A Good Game" is an informative and entertaining guide into American sports and sports culture that offers a mix of must-know information about all major American spectator sports and teaches readers some common sense communications techniques for using sports to make valuable business connections and social contacts, too.
