German Jews who could, escaped the extermination frenzy of Hitler against the Jews. They had lost relatives—murdered by the Nazis-- and fled to America. The men were drafted into the U.S. Army. Many of these were ordered to Camp Ritchie and its Military Intelligence Center because of their ability to speak native German. Intensively trained to use their native language abilities, they became known as the “Ritchie Boys.” These Ritchie Boys were trained to interrogate German prisoners of war to obtain current battlefield information and plans to help the Army commanders anticipate the German military moves and defeat them; they translated and interpreted German documents taken off prisoners and dead Germans reflecting current German military thinking. They risked their lives sneaking behind the German lines to capture prisoners and documents. They turned out to be a tremendous asset to Generals like George Patton, commander of the Third Army, and John Gavin, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division. The Ritchie Boys did not avoid danger, and many lost their lives in the war against--and defeating--the Nazis.

This book provides an empirically formulated foundation for conflict-sensitive conservation, a field in which the existing literature relies primarily on anecdotal evidence. Seeking to better understand the impact of conflict on the implementation and outcomes of environmental projects, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Independent Evaluation Office and the Environmental Law Institute undertook an evaluation of GEF support to fragile and conflict-affected contexts. Following a qualitative and quantitative analysis of documents from more than 4,000 projects, the research team discovered a statistically significant negative correlation between a country’s Fragile States Index score and the implementation quality of environmental projects in that country. In this book, the evaluation and research team explain these groundbreaking findings in detail, highlighting seven key case studies: Afghanistan, Albertine Rift, Balkans, Cambodia, Colombia, Lebanon, and Mali. Drawing upon additional research and interviews with GEF project implementation staff, the volume illustrates the pathways through which conflict and fragility frequently impact environmental projects. It also examines how practitioners and sponsoring institutions can plan and implement their projects to avoid or mitigate these issues and find opportunities to promote peacebuilding through their environmental interventions. Examining data from 164 countries and territories, this innovative book will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental management, conservation, international development, and the fast-growing field of environmental peacebuilding. Twin coffins were hauled to a hillside graveyard on a flat bed log truck. How did this widow and her seven little children survive the great depression of the 1930's? Since making moonshine whiskey was illegal in the 1930's, how did federal, state and county law enforcement officers cut down a huge still on Moonshine Island without making a single arrest? Furthermore, how did one of the nation's most wanted criminals serve as a deputy sheriff in the same community in later years? Spirit of Americana provides some logical answers to these puzzling questions. Necessity being the mother of invention explains how a resident of this poverty stricken ridge harnessed his waterfall to generate electricity for his home using automobile and bicycle parts. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the Rural Electrical Association (REA) followed this same method a few years later bringing electricity from huge dams and generators to many houses on The Ridge and elsewhere. The Ridge did not lack military heroes during two World Wars, as well as wars in Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Some came home alive. Some did not. Freedom was not cheap. The Ridge residents believed in America maintaining its freedom.

The Bible and Hebrew texts tell us: The Bible tells us in Genesis 8:4 that the ark rested “upon the mountains of Ararat.” Hebrew text tells us the ark came to rest on the mountains of “rrt.” There are no vowels in original Hebrew text, so “rrt” translated to Urartu and later to Ararat. Research tells us the area extended from southeastern Turkey across the present border into Iran and north to include most of present day Armenia to the southwest corner of Georgia then southwest to about the present city of Malatya and back southeast and south of Lake Van and southeast Turkey. It covered much of the eastern 1/3 of the present day Turkey. Mount Ararat is within that general area. Additional research that includes the time when Genesis is understood to have been written by Moses (1400-1450 BC) indicates that the Urartu Kingdom may have included the area into what is now Northern Iraq and to Historic Assyria. Additional research using Wikipedia tell us Assyrian sources from early 1300 BC have the Urartu Kingdom in the vast mountainous regions southwest of the Black Sea and Southwest of the Caspian Sea. Mount Ararat is within that general area. If the “mountains of Ararat,” or Urartu has included such a large area or areas over the centuries, then since there has been no verifiable discovery that has been proven to be a large structure of a great age, It can be understood why some researchers are of the opinion that Mount Ararat may not have been in the area of Urartu at the time of the writing of the book of Genesis, or the ark did not land on Mount Ararat, but on another mountain within the vast area. Some other mountains suggested by those who have varied opinions are mentioned in chapter 17. There is also the belief by some that Mount Ararat is a post-flood mountain. This rationale is pursued despite the many reports (more than 40) of an ark sighting on Mount Ararat. A question here given regarding the landing place of the ark may be: Was Mount Ararat in the Urartu Kingdom at the time Genesis was written? (You have read this book; you know my position on the position of Mount Ararat when the ark landed and when Genesis was written). It certainly was in the Urartu Kingdom in the 9th century BC which later succeeded to the Armenians in the 6th century BC, but was Mount Ararat included in the “mountains of Ararat” (Gen. 8:4) when the book of Genesis was written? Moses is understood to have written the book of Genesis. Henrietta C. Mears (chapter 9, foot note 13) says the book of Genesis closes about 300 years before Moses was born. Moses could have only received the information to write the book by a direct revelation from God, or by historical records. If historical records were involved, where did the records come from? She writes: “No doubt it was written long before by Abraham, Noah, or Enoch, who knows?” Dr. Henry Morris agrees (also chapter 9, footnote 14) and ads that oral traditions handed down over the centuries may have been involved here too. God shared the records with Moses in whatever manner he chose to do so. The Word of God is truth. As far as Mt. Ararat being a post-flood mountain as some seem to believe, Dr. John Morris, Dr. Tim LaHaye and other scientists tell us the mountain was pre-flood and grew to its greatest height with all the geological activity that took place during the flood (Chapter 9). Turkish geologist Dr. Bayraktutan has located what are believed to be “basement rocks” that give proof that Mount Ararat was pre-flood (“Who We Are” section). A question may be: What area did the Urartu Kingdom occupy long before Moses arrived on the scene? Wherever the area was I am of the belief that Mount Ararat was included in that area that would be known as the “mountains of Ararat” at the time the ark landed on it. I have personally talked with at least 6 people who have seen, or have personal knowledge of the ark on Ararat. They are the Reverend Vince Will who saw it from an aircraft in WWII, Ed Davis who during WWII was taken to see the ark by Kurds from his base in neighboring Iran, two 2 Kurdish shepherds who told me they saw part of a large structure, Dudley Thomas who held a top secret security clearance and saw satellite photographs and classified information in the “Science and technology Highlights” classified journal when in the navy, and Saim Sahin who was taken to the ark and was able to touch it. In the early sixties American networks started looking for cameramen to cover the military events in Vietnam and the Dominican Republic. CBS News hired Carl Sorensen. He tells how, with Correspondent Dan Rather, he survived an attack by a Vietnamese’s fighter plane and how a Vietnamese helicopter dropped Morley Safer and Sorensen into a combat zone leaving them covered to their necks in a swamp with muddy waters. In Cambodia, two Khmer Rouge cadres surprised Correspondent Bert Quint, Sorensen and Soundman Patrick Forest, wounding Forest. The author describes vividly how the Mexican Army in 1968 attacked the Plaza of the Three Cultures killing defenseless students and onlookers, and how a colonel smashed Sorensen’s camera lens and threatened to kill the CBS team. During the Cyprus conflict Turkish jets attacked the Nicosia Hilton Hotel wounding the author with a rocket fragment. In Iran, Sorensen was arrested by the Islamic Committee guards and put in prison accused of being an American spy. He also covered Pope John Paul II traveling in search of love and peace receiving enough papal blessings to last a lifetime.

Carl V. Harris’s Segregation in the New South, completed and edited by W. Elliot Brownlee, explores the rise of racial exclusion in late nineteenth-century Birmingham, Alabama. In the 1870s, African Americans in this crucial southern industrial city were eager to exploit the disarray of slavery’s old racial lines, assert their new autonomy, and advance toward full equality. However, most southern whites worked to restore the restrictive racial lines of the antebellum South or invent new ones that would guarantee the subordination of Black residents. From Birmingham’s founding in 1871, color lines divided the city, and as its people strove to erase the lines or fortify them, they shaped their futures in fateful ways. Social segregation is at the center of Harris’s history. He shows that from the beginning of Reconstruction southern whites engaged in a comprehensive program of assigning social dishonor to African Americans—the same kind of dishonor that whites of the Old South had imposed on Black people while enslaving them. In the process, southern whites engaged in constructing the meaning of race in the New South.
