Multi-carrier technologies have emerged as important instruments in telecommunications. OFDM is in the forefront, with its adoption by the IEEE 802.11 standards committee and the European HYPERLAN standards group. Following OFDM, MC-CDMA is also demonstrating considerable promise when compared to competing technologies. According to the authors, these technologies are just the beginning in the coming multi-carrier revolution. In Multi-Carrier Technologies for Wireless Communication, the authors explain how a common multi-carrier platform is being designed for DS-CDMA, TDMA, OFDM and MC-CDMA systems. Findings are presented which show how this multi-carrier platform enhances network capacity and probability of error performance.Specific results include (1) innovation in multi-carrier technologies that are enabling them to become an integral part of TDMA and DS-CDMA systems; and (2) the design of multi-carrier systems to overcome PAPR problems (in, e.g., OFDM). Multi-Carrier Technologies for Wireless Communication is an important book for engineers who work with DS-CDMA, TDMA, OFDM, or MC-CDMA systems, and are seeking new ways of exploiting the wireless medium based on a "smarter" signal processing.

This book is the published proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Trace Element Metabolism in Man and Animals. The Symposium was held at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California, U.S.A. from May 31 through June 5, 1987. The decision to hold TEMA-6 at Asilomar was made at TEMA-5 in 1985. The International Guidance Committee decided to hold the meeting in California in part to recognize the significant cont~i butions made to the field of trace element metabolism by Professor Lucille S. Hurley. As such, she was the obvious choice as chair of the local organ izing committee. One of the principal goals of Professor Hurley was that TEMA-6 serve as a forum for discussing the use and application of newer methodologies, such as molecular biology, computer modelling and stable isotopes, in studies of trace element metabolism. Based on the comments which the local organizing committee has received, this goal was achieved. The Symposium was attended by 275 scientists from 32 countries covering 6 continents. Twenty-five speakers were chosen for our plenary sessions.

Shock and Naturalization in Contemporary Japanese Literature

This study introduces the concepts of naturalization and naturalized modernity, and uses them as tools for understanding the way modernity has been experienced and portrayed in Japanese literature since the end of the Second World War. Special emphasis is given to four leading post-war writers – Kawabata Yasunari, Abe Kobo, Murakami Haruki and Murakami Ryu. The author argues that notions of ‘shock’ in modern city life in Japan (as exemplified in the writings of Walter Benjamin and George Simmel), while present in the work of older Japanese writers, do not appear to hold true in much contemporary Japanese literature: it is as if the ‘shock’ impact of change has evolved as a ‘naturalized’ or ‘Japanized’ process. The author focuses on the implications of this phenomenon, both in the context of the theory of modernity and as an opportunity to reevaluate the works of his chosen writers.
