This book scrutinizes the 39 parables attributed to Jesus in the Gospels. Jesus was a part of a story-telling society in the first century land of Israel. A popular maxim characterizes them as “earthly stories with heavenly meanings.” They often appear that way in context of the Gospels of the New Testament. However, if you retroject them back into the dynamic context of the life and activity of Jesus they suddenly assume not just a “spiritual” but also a more “earthly” vibrancy. Knowing that context the reactions of his contemporaries become clear: we can grasp how they were heard, what people would think of the parables’ message and the character of the messenger. Jesus’ society was in a crisis and part of the intent of Jesus was to address that crisis and rescue his beloved nation from disaster. Story telling changes the way people think and makes them more attentive to new ideas. Although to describe Jesus’ message as subversive may seem to be a distasteful characterization, his parables were meant to subvert popular thought and belief. In this he was completely faithful, however, to Israel’s faith which, at its deepest level, rebels against the powers of this world. In the parables we meet Jesus “on the ground” as he walked the hills of the Galilee, gathered hearers in the villages, and sat among his contemporaries and called them to revolutionize mind and heart and, as the prophets of old also had implored the nation, to return to the gracious heart of their God. In this reading of the parables the reader will be surprised, challenged, and perhaps even be disturbed by the Jesus who emerges in his stories we call parables.

This study of the miracles attributed to Jesus in the Gospels begins with a survey of the sciences, because in our present cultural context, materialism is the dominant approach to and understanding of our world, of history, and of our very selves. If the materialist's understanding is true, then there is no such thing as miracles, because every event must occur as the result of some previous material events. Contemporary biblical scholarship mostly approaches the miracle stories from a materialist point of view. It questions their historicity because they violate what has now become the entrenched modus operandi in our culture and society, operating with the idea that the universe is a closed nexus of cause and effect. The miracles are understood, then, as products of the community and not historical reports, although, according to this line of scholarship, they may be based on some vague recollection of Jesus's activity that somehow had healing effects. Modern science, however, as one scientist has put it, in climbing the mountain of knowledge, has reached its peak and found a theologian at the top. The sciences, in other words, have led to the implication that our universe has a creator and that the universe and the human genome have been designed.

Written in the intense political and intellectual tumult of the early years of the Weimar Republic, Political Theology develops the distinctive theory of sovereignty that made Carl Schmitt one of the most significant and controversial political theorists of the twentieth century. Focusing on the relationships among political leadership, the norms of the legal order, and the state of political emergency, Schmitt argues in Political Theology that legal order ultimately rests upon the decisions of the sovereign. According to Schmitt, only the sovereign can meet the needs of an "exceptional" time and transcend legal order so that order can then be reestablished. Convinced that the state is governed by the ever-present possibility of conflict, Schmitt theorizes that the state exists only to maintain its integrity in order to ensure order and stability. Suggesting that all concepts of modern political thought are secularized theological concepts, Schmitt concludes Political Theology with a critique of liberalism and its attempt to depoliticize political thought by avoiding fundamental political decisions.

On April 5, 1918, as American troops fought German forces on the Western Front, German American coal miner Robert Prager was hanged from a tree outside Collinsville, Illinois, having been accused of disloyal utterances about the United States and chased out of town by a mob. In Labor, Loyalty, and Rebellion: Southwestern Illinois Coal Miners and World War I, Carl R. Weinberg offers a new perspective on the Prager lynching and confronts the widely accepted belief among labor historians that workers benefited from demonstrating loyalty to the nation. The first published study of wartime strikes in southwestern Illinois is a powerful look at a group of people whose labor was essential to the war economy but whose instincts for class solidarity spawned a rebellion against mine owners both during and after the war. At the same time, their patriotism wreaked violent working-class disunity that crested in the brutal murder of an immigrant worker. Weinberg argues that the heightened patriotism of the Prager lynching masked deep class tensions within the mining communities of southwestern Illinois that exploded after the Great War ended.

The context is in terms of six dynamics or factors: the history of late antiquity of the Mediterranean world from Alexander to the destruction of the temple and how people in the land of Israel interacted with that history; Israel's economic, social, religious, and political structures; and the ecology of the land of Jesus' time. In particular we understand Jesus and the movement he initiated as part of other renewal movements of his time and place that arose to confront what most of his contemporaries perceived as the corrosion of Jewish society. So the Jewish people of the first century, living in their patrimonial land of Israel, were embroiled in a crisis that threatened to overwhelm the nation. The Beloved Son as Tantalizing Teacher sums up the situation, with the pithy phrase borrowed from one scholar, as a people whose "backs were against the wall.
