Whereas “The Figure in the Carpet“ tells the story of a literary critic who fails to understand the work of a fictitious author named Hugh Vereker, “The Beast in the Jungle“ is about the protagonist John Marcher who is waiting for an unknown event in his life. Both stories deal with the subject of a hidden secret that remains unknown to the protagonists of James’s stories. Due to the fact that these secrets remain unsolved throughout the narratives, this essay focuses on the design and effects of the leading metaphors. It compares these metaphors with each other and tries to outline their differences and similarities. Starting with the definition of the term “metaphor“ and illustrating it’s importance for Henry James’s stories, it proceeds with a short overview of the stories’s issues. After illustrating the importance of literary meaning from the perspective of philosophers and literary scholars, this essay proceeds with the relevance of literary meaning for James’s stories. The essay’s last paragraph analyzes the leading metaphors of both narratives by comparing their design and effects for the stories’s meanings. Finally, this work concludes by saying that the metaphors are linked relating to their issues and contribute to the stories’ messages.

It deals with the theme of a "dysfunctional family" and the egoistical abuse and neglect of a child. Whereas these themes seem to be obvious and determining for the novel, there is one topic that solely appears on closer observation. This mentioned topic is concerned with knowledge and intelligence, especially with that of the novel’s protagonist Maisie. Indeed, the novel’s title indirectly comprises the relevance of knowledge, alone because the reader wants to find out what Maisie knows. However, the topic seems to recede into the background. On closer inspection it becomes obvious that knowledge and gaining insight run like a thread through the entire novel. This essay analyses the role of knowledge in Henry James’s novel "What Maisie knew" and Siegel’s and McGehee’s film of the same title. Furthermore, it tries to answer the question what role Maisie’s knowledge plays in novel and film. After defining the term "knowledge" this essay proceeds with applying the definitions to James’s heroine Maisie. Furthermore, it analyses the different types of knowledge that play a role in James’s novel and the circumstances that have an impact on Maisie’s knowledge. Given the fact that Siegel’s and McGehee’s film represent an adaption of James’s novel, the importance of knowledge in the film will be analyzed in the essay’s final section as well. It concludes in saying that knowledge is important for the young heroine’s development and her way towards maturity. Whilst knowledge and Maisie’s insights have a great impact on the course of the novel, McGehee’s and Siegel’s film emphasizes the consequences of bad parenting.

To deal with Henry James and his works also means to appreciate him as a figure of literary interest. That is to say that he increasingly became not only the issue of reviews or literary criticism but a literary character in a number of novels as well. The numerous biographies and stories about Henry James emphasize his importance but also raise the question of truth and reliability in texts of this genre. The Irish writer Colm Tóibín deals with Henry James in his novel "The Master" and queues into the diversity of literary works about Henry James. To understand the ambiguity of James as a person of literary interest, this essay tries to focus on the characteristics that shape the view of Henry James. Furthermore, it aims to investigate the question whether Colm Tóibín creates a fictional Henry James who appeals to “somebody who’s never read a word of James and knows nothing to him“. Starting with the definition of relevant terms, this essay proceeds with the description of the contemporary interest in Henry James. Furthermore, it examines Colm Tóibín’s narrative techniques in order to characterize James and questions to what extent these techniques contribute to the fictionality of his work. After exploring the usage of intertextuality, this essay mentions the effects for the two readerships that The Master addresses. It concludes in saying that for though Colm Tóibín does not invent a fictitious character, his Henry James remains a variant of the real Henry James.
Rapidly evolving digital technologies are reciprocally linked to the way people think, learn, generate knowledge, create, communicate, and collaborate in the digital age. These media-communicative and related sociocultural changes must be acknowledged in the educational context. The aim of the present study is, from a transnational perspective, to investigate experts’ anticipated L1 education futures in 2030 and teachers’ literacies deemed necessary in this context. The research aims are addressed through an exploratory sequential mixed methods research design reflected in the application of a three-round modified Delphi study. The panel is drawn from individuals who are considered experts at the intersection of (L1) education and digitalisation and are selected on their theoretical or applied expertise and their interest in the issue under investigation. It becomes clear that the experts emphasised the need for transformations regarding traditional structures, practices, and processes of teaching and learning by 2030, specifically given contemporary practices and forms of learning, thinking, and working in the digital age.

Carina Klein examines the quality of the existing modern ammonoid zonation based on three methods, being Unitary Associations (UA), Constrained Optimization (CONOP) as well as Ranking and Scaling (RASC). The author sets out which of these three methods is best suitable to refine these zones. The results obtained are compared to each other with regard to ammonoid succession and resolution as well as with empirical data from selected reference sections. The analysis reveals that the UA and RASC methods are the most suitable since the results best mirror the empirical data from the single outcrops.
