However, there are significant pieces of inspiring information, sent directly from our Savior Jesus Christ, still waiting to be uncovered with his words. Thus the review of the Golden Rule is an appropriate place to begin our scriptural chase of discovery. The second subject discussed is truth. We are each deeply immersed in our own search for truth. Identifying truth and then applying it in our lives are two essential ingredients in our efforts to find happiness and purpose for our daily experiences. The third chapter presents discovery of the second Golden Rule. Here we encounter an unusual principle and its direct connection within the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The remaining chapters explore several practical applications of the second Golden Rule. Jesus used parables to illustrate gospel principles. I have peppered within these pages several of my own stories, with the intent that they might serve a similar purpose, including the Picture Puzzle Principle and the Parable of the Lifeboat, the Lincoln Log Lesson, and my story of Spies and Triangulation. This project has haunted my waking moments for over seven years. My purpose is to share my own witness of Jesus Christ. It is my hope that these stories may bless your life and bring joy, knowing that one more soul has been saved.

Geoffrey Parker has remarked that the Spanish Armada, though a disastrous defeat, was a considerable psychological success. Deep into the seventeenth century the specter of a returning armada haunted England. Twice in the middle of James I’s reign alarms occurred. One grew out of the king’s plan, opposed by Spain, to marry his daughter Elizabeth to the Calvinist elector of the Palatinate. The other derived from a rekindling of the disputed succession in the Cleves-Jülich duchies in the lower Rhineland, into which Spanish forces intervened militarily, while England suspected the formation of a large Spanish-led Catholic league, seemingly bent on invasion, which caused a few days of panic in London. Both scares were based on misinformation and rumor, worsened by longstanding English anxiety over Spanish designs and doubts about the loyalty of English Catholics, the persecution of whom intensified. The latter scare occasioned the appearance in London of a satirical print, long thought in England to be lost, of James holding the pope’s nose to the grindstone, but a copy sent to Madrid by the Spanish ambassador has survived, and, reproduced here, preserves what appears to be the oldest known example of English political satire in the print medium.

The scattering of acoustic and electromagnetic waves by periodic sur faces plays a role in many areas of applied physics and engineering. Opti cal diffraction gratings date from the nineteenth century and are still widely used by spectroscopists. More recently, diffraction gratings have been used as coupling devices for optical waveguides. Trains of surface waves on the oceans are natural diffraction gratings which influence the scattering of electromagnetic waves and underwater sound. Similarly, the surface of a crystal acts as a diffraction grating for the scattering of atomic beams. This list of natural and artificial diffraction gratings could easily be extended. The purpose of this monograph is to develop from first principles a theory of the scattering of acoustic and electromagnetic waves by periodic surfaces. In physical terms, the scattering of both time-harmonic and transient fields is analyzed. The corresponding mathematical model leads to the study of boundary value problems for the Helmholtz and d'Alembert wave equations in plane domains bounded by periodic curves. In the formal ism adopted here these problems are intimately related to the spectral analysis of the Laplace operator, acting in a Hilbert space of functions defined in the domain adjacent to the grating.
