Sir Charles Willink was responsible for some of the most important advances in the study of the text and metre of Greek tragedy published in the last fifty years. With his unrivalled knowledge of tragic usage and ear for subtle rhythmical points, he was able to solve long-standing problems in areas ranging from metrical analysis to staging and the detection of interpolations, and many of his proposals have already been adopted in standard editions. This volume collects all Willink's published papers, except the two earliest, which are summarized. Three important new articles, on Euripides’ Helen, Medea, and Alcestis, are published for the first time, and additions and corrections to the published papers are included, together with an index of passages discussed.
Using Euripides' play Helen as the main point of reference, C. W. Marshall's detailed study expands our understanding of Athenian tragedy and provides new interpretations of how Euripides created meaning in performance. Marshall focuses on dramatic structure to show how assumptions held by the ancient audience shaped meaning in Helen and to demonstrate how Euripides' play draws extensively on the satyr play Proteus, which was part of Aeschylus' Oresteia. Structure is presented not as a theoretical abstraction, but as a crucial component of the experience of performance, working with music, the chorus and the other plays in the tetralogy. Euripides' Andromeda in particular is shown to have resonances with Helen not previously described. Arguing that the role of the director is key, Marshall shows that the choices that a director can make about role doubling, gestures, blocking, humour, and masks play a crucial part in forming the meaning of Helen.
Since the downfall of Soeharto in 1998 many autobiographical writings have appeared in Indonesia from the pens of those who were marginalized by his so-called New Order regime. This book examines representative autobiographies of several such individuals: two ex-political prisoners who describe themselves as Muslim Communists; two writers of the left, one a woman in a senior position in the left-wing women s organization, Gerwani, and one a well-known male novelist who spent years in exile in China and Russia; two Muslim opponents of Soeharto, one an intellectual and the other a political campaigner; and finally, two collections of short autobiographies by the younger generation, one a group involved in social welfare action, the other a group of dedicated young Muslims. The scrutiny of the texts is in all cases preceded by a brief account of the historical and cultural context of the writing of the autobiographies. In the analysis of the works themselves the emphasis is on trying to represent the implicit tone of the narrative as much as its overt contents. Both general and specialist readers are consequently invited to reflect on the memories and experiences of significant participant-observers as a mode of understandig a recent period in Indonesian history.
