Rising above the northern Michigan landscape, prehistoric burial mounds and impressive circular earthen enclosures bear witness to the deep history of the region’s ancient indigenous peoples. These mounds and earthworks have long been treated as isolated finds and have never been connected to the social dynamics of the time in which they were constructed, a period called Late Prehistory. In Mound Builders and Monument Makers of the Northern Great Lakes, 1200–1600, Meghan C. L. Howey uses archaeology to make this connection. She shows how indigenous communities of the northern Great Lakes used earthen structures as gathering places for ritual and social interaction, which maintained connected egalitarian societies in the process. Examining “every available ceramic sherd from every northern earthwork,” Howey combines regional archaeological investigations with ethnohistory, analysis of spatial relationships, and collaboration with tribal communities to explore changes in the area’s social setting from 1200 to 1600. During this time, cultural shifts, such as the adoption of maize horticulture, led to the creation of the earthen constructions. Burial mounds were erected, marking claims to resources and defining areas for local ritual gatherings, while massive circular enclosures were constructed as intersocietal ceremonial centers. Together, Howey shows, these structures made up part of an interconnected, purposefully designed cultural landscape. When societies incorporated the earthworks into their egalitarian social and ritual behaviors, the structures became something more: ceremonial monuments. The first systematic examination of earthen constructions in what is today Michigan, Mound Builders and Monument Makers of the Northern Great Lakes, 1200–1600 reveals complicated indigenous histories that played out in the area before European contact. Howey’s richly illustrated investigation increases our understanding of the diverse cultures and dynamic histories of the pre-Columbian ancestors of today’s Great Lake tribes.

He's reliable, fun-loving, patient, kind, respected, accountable, an exceptional role model, and a vital part of his church and family. What Ben feels, though, and what God knows is that Ben Davis has the same struggles and challenges that everyone else has. He doubts his decisions, second-guesses his ideas, and sometimes makes mistakes. If left to do what he wanted, Ben feels that on his own, he would fail every time. With the partnership of a precious wife whom he adores, a great son who looks to him for spiritual direction, and a sweet and hilarious little girl who lights up his world and brings an abundance of joy to his life, Ben has help. But no matter how much help he gets from his family, Ben knows his best help is to rely on God for wisdom and a lot of grace and mercy. Jeremiah 17:9 says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked who can know it?" Things usually work out, and Ben comes out looking like a good guy, and God is glorified, but most of the time, he's glad not everyone can read the heart of Ben Davis.
Thoreau joked that he was a "self-appointed inspector of snowstorms and rainstorms," never dreaming that such a need might exist. But such is the author's work and that of his various helpers, from ski bums to shortstops. They travel the alpine wilderness at all seasons by touring skis , snowshoes, pack llamas, float-tubes, and a tiny but dependable rat. The remove mountain beauty, "where thoughts stretch for miles and days," would be enough, but C.L. Rawlins is after something more. He's a backcountry hydrologist, collecting rain, snow, and the water of high lakes to measure air pollution. Alongside Rawlins we discover the natural history of the central Rockies, the flowering of plants, and the ways of mountain animals. We learn how the Shoshoni lived in this harsh country before the arrival of settlers. We see also the effect of twentieth-century living on a wilderness that feels pristine but bears the chemical trace of distant smokestacks and freeways. With a style that roams between natural observation and personal essay, Rawlins's Sky's Witness gives access not only to the wilderness but to the ways in which we know ourselves.

It was the quiet after the storm. I sat up in bed - what had awakened me? I tried to sit still to listen, but my heart was pounding. Throwing off the covers I turned to look out at the rising moon shining brilliantly through the departing storm clouds, its silver lighting up my room. Goosebumps rose on my arms and I tried to rub them down. At the gym pool, I peered down from the diving board, watching as the rising moon cast its light upon the water. Moonlight trailed into the water and bubbles began to rise from the bottom, the pool thrilling to the moonlight as its water called to me. Caught up in the moonlight’s song, I dove in an arc into the still waters, shattering the moon’s reflection. Blissful waters greeted me, calling to me as one of its own. It was a thrilling experience as instead of the expected pool bottom, a sparkling undersea vista welcomed me.
Pride, as we all know, leads us downhill. Yet, all of us, even the gods and our epic heroes, at one time or another, are ensnared into this trap. Is there any hope? Yes, as these stories from folklore and the Mahabharata tell us, once having learned our lesson, it is possible to live a better life! "I am sure, these stories will give a direction to the children and their parents and enable them to make a deeper study of our Puranas and Itihasas and share its precious message with others." - Swami Chinmayananda ….Krishna blessed them all and said, "So long as you remember that there is an unseen hand which guides you, you will not have a chance to suffer." There are many other words of wisdom interspersed with the fun-filled stories. The author, Sri. C. L. Purushothama Rao is a seasoned Mission worker with a deep knowledge of our ancient literature along with the ability to mould it for children so that they may enjoy the tales and learn from them.
The authors use confidential interviews with Supreme Court justices, analysis of their rulings from 1970 to 2005, and measures that tap their perceived ideological tendencies to provide a critical examination of the ideological roots of judicial decision making, uncovering the complexity of contemporary judicial behaviour. Examining judicial behaviour through the lens of three different research strategies grounded in qualitative and quantitative methodologies, Law, Ideology, and Collegiality presents compelling evidence that political ideology is a key factor in decision making and a prominent source of conflict in the Supreme Court of Canada.
Where did our myths come from? How did our different cultures, languages and customs develop? What would happen if a world wide calamity occurred which destroyed most life on earth? How would people survive? What would be left? What type of society would the survivors build? What would the world be like three hundred years later? "After the Bomb" is a story about what could happen. What might have happened.
C.L. Rawlins previous book, Sky's Witness, was praised by Jim Harrison for the "spaciousness of its thought and the antic wit of its style." Broken Country takes us back to the source: Wyoming's remote Salt River Range, where the author's life changed for good in the summer of 1973. Thus--with a rift between himself and his family, his heritage, and a nation at war--Rawlins begins a journey to the American interior. He takes to the high country with a team of horses, three dogs, and a friend named Mitchell Black to watch over a herd of sheep. And there he encounters not only a rugged landscape but his own mythic legacy: the frontier West. "To be found," he writes, "you must be lost or lose yourself...And to be whole, you must know that you are, or can be, or will be, broken." Here is fresh air, ferocious mirth and a hint of silent terror as Rawlins tackles the questions we long to ask of ourselves and our tangled world. As our reach entends to the vastness of the land, it also deepens to touch the mysteries of the heart. In Broken Country we find both storm and shelter as the author guides us to the place of understanding.
